Libor Kozak once again inspired the Aquile to victory in a gritty tactical battle against Sinisa Mihajlovic’s Gigliati.
The Aquile started positively but quickly faded as they lacked the inspiration of Hernanes in the middle of the park. The Viola were equal struggling and rarely tested Fernando Muslera during the opening period.
In the second period Lazio looked more threatening and took the lead from the penalty spot through Libor Kozak. With the presence of Giuseppe Sculli on the left the Aquile were far more direct and the former Genoa man turned provider as he floated a wonderful ball to Kozak at the back post for Lazio’s second.
The win lifted the Aquile up to second and eased the tensions around Edy Reja’s side who have been struggling as of late.
The game started brightly with the Biancocelesti immediately imposing themselves in attack. Sergio Floccari tried his luck early on and the Lazio hitman was denied at the near post by an acrobatic Artur Boruc.
With little quality in the middle of the park both sides struggled to create in the opening period as they opted to play long balls in a bid to near the opposition’s box.
The Aquile enjoyed more of the chances early on but Floccari was clearly lacking the innovation of Hernanes who started the game on the substitute’s bench. The hitman was dealt a dose of bad luck shortly before the break when a blow to the knee forced him to take an early bath.
Coach Edy Reja had already seen Modibo Diakite leave the field due to a muscular complaint and it was proving a frustrating evening for the Biancocelesti.
After the re-start the sides sprung into life and Fiorentina looked far more threatening following the introduction of Gaetano D’Agostino from the bench.
Sculli went close on the hour mark when he struck low on the turn just inside the 18 yard box. Again Boruc proved alert between the sticks however and the Viola glovesman did well to get down and cover his near post.
Lazio were handed a golden chance to take the lead shortly after when Kozak was bundled down in the box by Per Kroldrup. The 21 year old hitman calmly stepped up to the spot and nestled home the penalty to give the Aquile a precious lead.
The goal brought the home side to life and Kozak doubled his and Lazio’s tally just minutes later when Sculli’s pinpoint cross found him at the far post. The Czech man had little to do with the ‘keeper already beaten and he made no mistakes to the joy of the Curva Nord faithful.
The result brings an air of relief to the Lazio camp following a recent slump which has seen the Aquile lose sight at the top. Fiorentina are still yet to win away from home this season and can have few complaints after failing to create for long spells of the game.
