Inter-Bologna Preview: Must-win game for beleaguered Nerazzurri

Andrea Stramaccioni's side were well beaten in the Europa League by Tottenham on Thursday night and go into the game low on confidence and in desperate need of three points

Kuzmanovic, Gargano,

Garics, Antonsson, Cherubin, Morleo
Taider, Perez
Gabbiadini, Diamanti, C'doulopoulos

Inconsistent in the league and all but out of the Europa League, Inter go into Sunday's clash with Bologna desperate for three points.

But with confidence already low, the Nerazzurri remain hamstrung by an injury crisis that sees no less than seven first team players on the treatment table.

Walter Samuel, Diego Milito, Matias Silvestre, Gaby Mudingayi, Luca Castellazzi, Yuto Nagatomo and Joel Obi all miss out of the clash with Bologna, while first choice goalkeeper Samir Handanovic is suspended, meaning Juan Pablo Carrizzo will make his debut between the posts.

Bologna will be boosted after recording their first back-to-back victories of the season and by the return of centre-back Mikael Antonsson.

Cesare Natali is their only injury-induced absentee and Panagiotis Kone sits the game out through suspension.

  • Inter have won 11 of their last 13 matches against Bologna.
  • Andrea Stramaccioni's men have won one, lost one and drawn one of their last three games in all competitions.
  • The Nerazzurri are now 12 points adrift of Serie A leaders Juventus.
  • Inter's last league game ended in a dramatic 3-2 victory away to Catania after they had fallen two goals behind.
  • Bologna have lost nine of their last 11 away games in the league.
  • The Rossoblu have won two games in succession for the first time this season, heading into the game.
  • Stefano Pioli's side go into the game sat in 11th spot, 15 points behind Inter.
  • The last game between the two sides ended in a 3-2 extra time win for Inter in the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

In hard times experienced heads are more vital than ever before and in the shape of the 39-year-old Argentine they do not come much more weathered. If Inter are to pull through their sticky patch, he will have to roll back the years with a commanding display.

There are few players in the game with a left foot to rival that of the Italy international. Spectacular free kicks and long distance efforts have become a trademark of his game and his delivery from set-pieces will ensure Bologna always have a goalscoring threat up their sleeve.
These could be decisive days for Inter boss Andrea Stramaccioni with rumours circulating regarding his future, but despite their recent struggles they might just sneak this one, with a little help from Bologna's dismal away record.
