Atalanta are still unbeaten against Inter since April 2010, though none of their last few encounters have been quite that dramatic. I hope you enjoyed Goal.com's coverage of that wonderful encounter, and from me, Tom Maston, have a great evening!
Have you all caught your breath yet? That match had everything. Great skill, controversy, seven goals including a hat-trick, a red card and one of the worst misses of the season. Denis' three goals should mean Atalanta will be back in Serie A next season while Inter may have to make do with just Europa League football again. They now face a massive uphill battle to catch Milan in third.
That was the last action of the match as the referee blew the final whistle, though ugly scenes have followed with Schelotto very much at the centre of it. He seemed to be targeted by some Atalanta players, though his retaliation hasn't helped.
90' + 4'
WHAT A MISS!!!! You will not see a worse miss than this for the rest of the season. Guarin does brilliantly to get to the byline before sliding a cross across the face of goal. Ranocchia is lurking at the back post, and with the goal gaping, slices the ball straight up in the air. Horrendous finishing from the defender.
90' + 3'
Brilliant defending from Atalanta as a cross is headed out from between two Inter attackers at the back post. Handanovic comes forward for the corner but he can't create anything.
Red Card Cristian Raimondi
RED CARD! The visitors will have to do it with ten men. Waiting for a corner to come in, an Schelotto has fallen to the ground, with the Atalanta midfielder adjudged to have commited violent conduct.
The fourth official signals three minutes of time added on. Can Atalanta hang on?
He chooses to cross this time, and Ranocchia flies in at the back post. He cannot make contact but feels he was pushed by a defender. The referee disagrees and gives a goal kick.
Yellow Card Davide Biondini
Another set-piece won in a dangerous position. What can Guarin do this time?
Yellow Card Lionel Scaloni
Inter still looking for that elusive equaliser, but a free-kick comes to nothing. Five minutes for Atalanta to hold out.
Cambiasso is sacrificed for the hosts, with Schelotto coming on. Cazzola replaces hat-trick hero Denis for the visitors.
Guarin strikes it and it's still rising as it goes over the top. Poor effort given the circumstances.
Denis trips Kovacic on the edge of the area and a real chance for Inter now...
Much more urgency from Inter now as they chase the game for the first time. Guarin tries his luck from long range but it flies well over. Could see a lot of efforts like that now.
Assist Giacomo Bonaventura
Goal Germán Denis
HAT-TRICK!!! What a turnaround! Denis has turned this game on its head and this is another superb penalty. Bonaventura takes on Juan before delivering a dangerous cross that Denis just has to divert past Handanovic into the net. 4-3 and you wouldn't bet against more here.
Cristiano Del Grosso
Second substitution for Atalanta as Del Grosso is withdrawn, with Brivio on in his place.
Almost another chance for Denis, but he is adjudged to have handled the ball on the edge of the area. Can he grab a hat-trick?
Goal Germán Denis
EQUALISER!!! Zanetti and Ranocchia get in each others' way on the edge of their own box, and Denis takes full advantage as he cuts inside onto his right foot and beats Handanovic at his near post via the woodwork. What a second half we are having at San Siro. Which way will the pendulum swing next?
Inter look a bit shell-shocked by that decsion and need to regroup here. It seemed Alvarez's goals were going to give them all three points.
Atalanta's tails are up here, and they win a free-kick level with the penalty spot on the right-hand side. Cigarini delivers it, but it's headed harmlessly onto the roof of the net.
Yellow Card Walter Samuel
The linesman has awarded a penalty to Atalanta! It looks like it has been given for a Ranocchia foul at the back post after a Biondini cross, but it looks extremely harsh.
Penalty Goal Germán Denis
GOAL!!! Denis makes no mistake from the spot, though Handanovic went the right way, and we have a game on our hands now.
As it stands Inter will go fourth in Serie A, just five points behind Milan in the battle for Champions League places.
Assist Mateo Kovačić
Goal Ricardo Álvarez
GOAL!!! No doubt about this one, and Ricky Alvarez has showed all his class here. The big striker collects the ball facing away from goal on the right-hand side of the area. That doesn't matter as he turns inside Stendardo with a brilliant stepover before firing in at the near post. A big five minutes in Inter's season.
End to end now, and Inter almost go further ahead as Rocchi and Cambiasso combine for Guarin curls in a powerful effort from a tight angle. Polito has it covered, though he needs two chances to gather the ball.
Goal Ricardo Álvarez
GOAL!!! Parity lasted less than two minutes as Inter go straight up the other end and re-take the lead. Atalanta are adamant Rocchi fouled Stendardo after a long ball was played over the top. The referee played on, and after Canini's header isn't strong enough to find Polito, Alvarez was on hand to nod into an empty net.
Assist Marko Livaja
Goal Giacomo Bonaventura
EQUALISER!!! Where is the the Inter defence? Substitute Livaja turns a cross into the centre where Bonaventura is all on his own. He has time to take a touch before lobbing Handanovic. Game on!
First change for the visitors as Livaja replaces Carmona in midfield.
Rocchi has done well leading the line for Inter, and he again wins a header in the area, this time from Zanetti's cross. He can't direct it towards goal, though, and it's easy for Polito to collect.
Brilliant footwork from Alvarez gets him into the away side's area on the byline. He tries to find Rocchi with his pull-back, but the striker is held off by Scaloni and cannot beat off the defender.
Best chance for the visitors so far, and it falls to their top-scorer Denis. Cigarini swings in a cross from the right, and the striker meets it on the volley, but his weak effort is straight at Handanovic. Encouragement for Atalanta.
Slow start to proceedings in the second half, though Atalanta seem to be committing more men forward. They know how key even a point would be to their fight for survival.
Atalanta start brightly after the break but they are almost caught out by a superb pass from Guarin. Rocchi runs onto it, but the home side cannot make anything of the chance to test Polito.
We are all set and Atalanta get us underway in the second period.
The players are about to make their way back onto the pitch at San Siro. Stefano Colantuono will have had a big 15 minutes as he tried to lift his side after conceding just before half-time. Will they have a positive reaction?
The home side have certainly earned that on the balance of play and will be hoping to add to it after the break. The loss of Cassano to injury is a blow, but Alvarez has looked bright since coming on. How do you see this game going now. Can Atalanta find a way back into the match? Let me know on Twitter @maston91 and I'll be back for the second period.
The referee blows the half-time whistle and Inter lead 1-0 at the break through Rocchi's strike.
That is horrible time to concede for Atalanta, but they almost produce an instant reply as a volleyed cross is cleared well by Pereira at the back post. Into a single minute of stoppage time.
Assist Á. Pereira
Goal Tommaso Rocchi
GOAL!!! Polito concedes another corner when he flaps at the resulting set-piece, and Inter make him pay this time as Rocchi steals in at the near post and stabs into the roof of the net. No more than the hosts deserve for the last 10 minutes.
Another good chance, and it falls for Rocchi this time. Kovacic finds him on the edge of the area, and the striker turns before firing in an effort that rolls just wide with the help of a deflection.
Inter have become more dominant as the half has wore on. Atalanta looking to hold out until the break now you feel.
It's Alvarez again as he takes the corner short before taking it back and testing Polito. The goalkeeper cannot hold his rather weak effort, but does well to take the ball off Cambiasso's toes as he looks to pick up the pieces.
Alvarez is slowly warming up, and a mazy run down the right hand side results in a corner.
Alvarez hasn't got his shooting boots on at the moment. The striker picks the ball up 30 yards from goal, cuts inside onto his left foot but drags his shot horribly wide.
WHAT A MISS! Great football by Inter and they should have the lead. Pereira gets forward down the left and clips over a ball that is asking to be finished. Alvarez is just on, and his rustiness shows as his side-foot volley is sliced horribly, eventually going out for a throw-in. Let off for Atalanta.
That strapping doesn't seem to have worked as Cassano sets off on a run upfield but pulls up again. He signals to the bench he needs to come off and is replaced by Alvarez. More injury woes for Inter.
Plenty of strapping being applied to Cassano's right leg, and the Italy international looks like he will carry on for the time being.
Inter are already without Milito and Palacio, and now Cassano is limping around holding what looks like his hamstring. Things are almost made worse as Biondini curls over with a good effort from the edge of the area.
Chance at the other end now as Del Grosso cuts in from the left. He has options in the middle but chooses to test Handanovic at his near post. The goalkeeper is equal to it and holds on easily.
Set-pieces could be the way forward here for Inter, as the resulting corner is an outswinger that Ranocchia heads just over the top. They are getting closer.
CLOSE! The home side almost work a training ground corner routine well as Guarin picks up the ball on the byline and whips the ball in towards the back post. Rocchi rises highest but his effort is deflected wide.
Inter only have themselves to blame for their lack of efforts on goal thus far. Sloppy passing has plagued them when they get in the final third. 0-0 midway through the first half.
Cassano wins a free-kick around 35 yards from goal, but that doesn't deter Guarin, who hits a powerful low effort. It's a difficult one for Polito, but he does well to keep hold of the strike low to his right.
Atalanta are more than holding their own at the moment. Most of the play is taking place in the Inter half, though the hosts' defence are comfortable in possession.
Kovacic is treading a fine line as he looks to again stop a promising Atalanta attack with a tackle from behind. The referee sees nothing wrong this time, but the midfielder may have to watch his challenges after picking up an early booking.
Still a fairly cagey affair, though we have seen the threat Denis can pose. A cross is swung in towards the striker, but despite getting up well, cannot direct his header goalwards.
Cambiasso wins a corner for the hosts after Stendardo blocks his cross, but Stramaccioni's side cannot take advantage as pinball in the area ends with Juan acrobatically volleying well wide.
Despite not testing Polito as of yet, Inter do look dangerous when they eventually get it forward. Cassano pulls away to the right and curls in a searching ball that just evades Rocchi and Cambiasso before bouncing out for a goal kick. Better from the hosts.
Inter are yet to stamp their authority on this game, with Rocchi basically playing as a lone striker with Cassano switching between the flanks alongside him. Palacio is sure to be a big miss this evening.
Enterprising play from the visitors as Bonaventura runs at the heart of the Inter defence. The forward finds Denis, who in turn lays the ball into Cigarini's path. The midfielder cannot control his first time effort, though, and it flies over the bar from around 25 yards.
Yellow Card Mateo Kovačić
The resulting corner ended in Atalanta launching a counter-attack, which is only ended when Kovacic trips Cigarini from behind. The midfielder is booked for a professional foul.
Guarin has the first effort on goal as he cuts inside onto his right foot, but his shot from distance is deflected wide of the post.
Slow start to proceedings here. Atalanta have matched the hosts' formation with five in midfield, meaning they are very difficult to pass through.
Inter kick-off and we are underway.
Inter haven't beaten tonight's opponents in three years. Could that change this evening?
The teams have made their way onto the field and we are almost ready for kick-off. Will Inter close the gap on the Champions League places or can the visitors cause a shock? The answers to those questions will be revealed very soon.
The two teams are in the tunnel and the supporters are waiting patiently to see their heroes. It shouldn't be long now...
Atalanta are seven points clear of the relegation zone, and they will need top-scorer German Denis to be on form if they are to get anything from this match. The striker has 12 goals this season.
Injury-ravaged Inter are currently eight points behind their city rivals Milan, and victory this evening would push them up to fourth in the Serie A table. They will be boosted by the return of Esteban Cambiasso after suspension, though Rodrigo Palacio is ruled out through injury.
Atalanta: Polito, Stendardo, Scaloni, Canini, Del Grosso, Bonaventura, Carmona, Cigarini, Raimondi, Biondini, Denis.
Inter: Handanovic, Ranocchia, Samuel, Pereira, Juan, Zanetti, Kovacic, Guarin, Cambiasso, Rocchi, Cassano.
The teams have been announced at San Siro...
