Will have been disappointed to have been beaten from an acute angle for the goal. Made a good stop from Derdiyok but his defence did him few favours. He did keep the score down with a couple of saves towards the end.
Demel proved today that he is simply not up to the job as a Bundesliga centre-half. His positional sense was sorely lacking and his clumsy non-header led to Leverkusen taking the lead a second-time, which die Werkself did not surrender.
The captain tried his best to lead the troops and his pressure forced Vidal to err and put the ball into his own net. He was disciplined and kept a lid on Derdiyok for the most part but he also lost most of his 50-50 battles. Still, the best of a bad bunch at the back.
Made a couple of decent forays forward but was also guilty of some poor challenges. He is not a patch on Demel as a right-back and in many ways is symbolic of the mediocrity that is haranguing Hamburg, a club who should be doing much better.
Not the greatest of games for the former captain in midfield as he struggled to keep a lid on his fiery temperament and his lack of pace was exposed against Leverkusen's dynamic attacking midfielders . Not a surprise when he was replaced by Son as HSV chased a point.
Kept hold of the ball well in the opening period but was rarely a penetrative force. Played too far infield in the first-half. He helped spark a mini-revival after the break but could not sustain his influence on the game.
The young left-back had a torrid time against the likes of Sam and Barnetta and he was given a real working over today, which he failed to come through. Didn't have a great deal of cover from Trochowski though it must be said.
Beaten in the midfield battle by Vidal in the first-half as the Chilean got underneath the veteran's skin. Deservedly hauled off in place of Elia.
R. van Nistelrooy
As ever was sniffing around for goalscoring chances but aside from one weak left-footed effort in the first-half, he was denied at the last minute by Manuel Friedrich. Did well to lay off the ball, which led to Guerrero's shot and then Elia's goal.
As ever, Pitroipa kept plugging away with his pace. Fired over the crossbar in the opening minute when more composure was required. However, he faded away and was overshadowed by his opposite numbers Barnetta and Sam.
Was an anonymous figure save for suffering one nasty challenge from Reinartz in the early stages. Did set up the second HSV goal though with an excellent shot, which hit the post.
Despite his side's victory, it wasn't Adler's greatest display as he was not always commanding from set-pieces and balls into the box. Furthermore, his distribution was well below-par with less than a quarter of his passes finding team-mates.
Made important clearance early on with Guerrero lurking. He gave a Hyypia-esque performance and was a rock at the back. The giant centre-half stuck to Van Nistelrooy like glue and ensured the Dutchman could not feed off his staple diet of tap-ins. The attackers may take all the plaudits but Friedrich's contribution to the win should not be forgotten.
Guilty of a bookable offence as Pitroipa looked to surge forward and he managed to quell the threat of the Burkinabe winger. Needs to be more disciplined though and give away less fouls.
Blotted his copybook with a rash sliding challenge from behind on Guerrero but thereafter he settled down, knowing he could not afford to err once more, which shows his growing maturity.
On his 100th Bundesliga appearance, he proved decisive at both ends with an own goal, a goal and a clever assist. Would have had another had Derdiyok finished one-on-one with Rost. Playing like this, Michael Ballack will have to settle for a place on the bench. Another outstanding display overall from one of the players of the season as he bossed midfield yet again.
The jet-heeled winger took his goal superbly on his return to Hamburg and showed just why he's been one of the buys of the season. He continues to excel in a Leverkusen shirt. Was targeted by his former team-mates and booked in one altercation but for the most part he kept his head.
The third of the attacking triumvirate behind the striker was frustrating early on but he produced an excellent cross from the right in the lead-up to the opening goal.
Castro had little trouble with Trochowski although he did lose most of his duels. However, his main action in this game was the superb ball he threaded through to Renato Augusto for B04's third goal.
Restored to the starting eleven, he was a calming presence in the midfield in contrast to the more dynamic Vidal. He was content to sit deep and let those in front of him do the real damage.
Spurned an excellent opportunity when one-on-one with Frank Rost and while he led the line quite well, will be under pressure to retain his spot with Helmes waiting on the bench and Kiessling nearing full fitness.
- 45 J. Drobný
- 13 R. Tesche
Replaced the hapless Aogo but fared little better as he didn't win a single challenge against an opponent.
- 35 T. Torun
Brought on in place of Ze Roberto and he added some respectability to the scoreline with a cool finish. Ultimately by the time he was introduced, Leverkusen were out of sight.
His late introduction lifted the entire team, as well as the crowd but he ultimately made only a negligible contribution to proceedings.
