Hercules 4-1 Atletico Madrid: Four-Star Herculanos Cruise Past Lacklustre Visitors

Hercules scored four goals in the first half and never looked back...

Hercules dismantled Atletico Madrid 4-1 on Monday evening at the Jose Rico Perez, with all of the home side's goals coming in the first-half.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 11th minute as Tote pushed forward and forced the ball over the line. His twisting and turning created enough space for a lunging shot to slip through David De Gea and make it 1-0.

Nelson Valdez tried to extend the lead on 19 minutes when he got on the end of an early ball, but couldn't direct his header on target.

Atletico were looking to equalise and Filipe's strong run down the right allowed the midfielder to fire a low shot, which Juan Calatayud parried away.

Valdez's persistence paid of in the 23rd minute as a neatly worked move on the right opened up space in front of goal, and his curling strike made it impossible for the outstretched 'keeper to get a fingertip to, making it 2-0.

Hercules made it 3-0 eight minutes later as Olivier Thomert got on the end of a cross from Paco Pena on the left, and directed the ball past De Gea.

David Trezeguet's first touch and shot from outside the box a minute before half-time ensured the home side would take a four-goal advantage into the interval. A short series of passes in the centre of midfield saw Valdez slide a pass to the Frenchman who slotted the ball home in the bottom-left corner.

Whatever los Colchoneros coach Quique Sanchez Flores told his troops during the break, it inspired them into action, as they constantly pressed forward, looking to get back into the match. Fran Merida had the best chance after coming on at the half, but his low driven shot went wide.

Sergio Aguero's well-taken free-kick curled around the wall and a statuesque Calatayud on 54 minutes, but could not beat the right-hand post.

Valdez almost made it 5-0 three minutes later as his well-struck shot from outside the penalty area also hit the post. The Paraguayan reacted first to the rebound, but failed to direct his shot on goal, as his header lacked power and accuracy.

Reyes believed he had gotten one back for the visitors as Fran Merida slipped a pass through to the attacker, who attempted to curl a shot beyond the 'keeper, but Calatayud was a full-stretch to parry the ball away.

An early ball by Sendao from the left flank almost trickled through to Trezeguet at the back-post, but a sliding Alvaro Dominguez ensured the Frenchman would not get to the ball.

Reyes pulled one back for the visitors with a minute to go in normal time as he capitalised on a mistake at the back, dribbled inside the box and rifled a low shot home to make it 4-1.
