Premier League Preview: Everton - Stoke City

Battle Of Mid-Table

After contrasting starts to the league season both sides find themselves with 10 points from their opening nine games, and they are separated by two places in the middle of the table. This makes the three points on offer crucial to both sides and should push them both to go out for the victory and fire them into the top half of the table.

So the pressure will be on the strikers to push their side on and the form this season suggests the odds would favour Stoke as their frontmen have scored six of their nine goals in the Premier League this term, with Kenwyne Jones scoring half of those.

Everton on the other hand will be hoping their strikers finally start to contribute as they have yet to hit the back of the net in the league, meaning they have relied on other areas of the team for the eight goals they have scored his season.

Everton Dominat Over Stoke

Since Stoke’s promotion to the top flight in 2008, Everton are unbeaten over the Potters on all four occasions, although two draws last season will give the visitors hope they can turn their fortunes around this time, however Stoke have only scored one goal in their two Premier League visits to Goodison Park.

Everton will take confidence from the fact that they have only conceded one goal in their last four Premier League matches and have won three of their last seven matches at home.

TEAM NEWS

Everton

Everton hope to be boosted by the return of creative midfielder Mikel Arteta for the visit of Stoke City following a hamstring injury, but they will be without Leon Osman who is out until the end of November with an ankle injury.

Osman joins influential midfielders Marouane Fellaini (hamstring) and Jack Rodwell (ankle) on the sideline, while John Heitinga is a long-term absentee with a calf injury.

Young full-back Seamus Coleman has impressed in recent weeks and he is expected to continue at full-back in favour of Tony Hibbert, while Nigerian striker Yakubu is likely to keep his place up front after an impressive display against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Possible starting XI: Howard; Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Baines; Pienaar, Neville, Arteta, Bilyaletdinov; Cahill; Yakubu.

Stoke City

Tony Pulis has been dealt a blow ahead of the game as Kenwyne Jones and Jermaine Pennant are both doubts with viruses.

Tuncay could return to the starting line-up after scoring against Manchester United, while midfielder Dean Whitehead is available for selection again after serving a one-game ban following his fifth booking of the season against Bolton Wanderers.

Ricardo Fuller is ruled out after aggravating his persistent shoulder injury against Bolton; and strike partner Mamady Sidibe is the only other injury concern with a calf injury that looks set to rule him out of action until the New Year.

Possible starting XI: Sorensen; Huth, Faye, Shawcross, Collins; Delap, Whitehead, Wilson, Etherington; Walters, Gudjohnsen.

The Australian is undoubtedly Everton’s danger man with his late runs from midfield and prowess in the air. Cahill is the club’s top scorer this season with four goals and he will be under pressure to continue this form while the strikers struggle for form.

M. Etherington

Position: Midfielder

The winger has been in excellent form in recent matches and gave Gary Neville such a torrid time in the first half against Manchester United that the full-back was replaced at half-time. Etherington’s pace and direct running puts defences on edge and his dangerous crosses provide the perfect ammunition for Kenwyne Jones to thrive off.
