• Goodison Park, Liverpool
Referee: M. Atkinson
• Attendance: 39510
A. Carroll 71'
L. Suárez 82'
Liverpool fully deserved the win, and it could have been more if Kuyt had scored from the penalty spot. Tim Howard played a big part in the game today and was one of the main reasons the scoreline wasn't embarrassing.
The referee calls an end to an eventful Merseyside derby. Goals from Suarez and Carroll made the difference today. Everton never really recovered after going down to 10 men when Rodwell was dismissed.
90' + 2'
Suarez takes a quick corner as he is being showered with missiles from the home fans. He chips the ball down the byline into Kuyt who gets to the ball before the Everton defence and touches the ball past Howard, but is denied by the post.
90' + 1'
A failed cross lands at the feet of Drenthe, who hits the ball on a half volley from distance. The shot has plenty of power but is right at Reina.
Fellaini puts a good cross from the left wing into the far post of Reina's goal, but the Spaniard reads the ball and takes it off of the head of Saha.
Carroll this time battles for the ball in the Everton box, deflecting a clearance into the air Howard struggles to retain the ball as the former Newcastle striker piles the pressure on the keeper, but he turns it round for a corner.
Baines manages to break through the Liverpool midfield, and has a shot from 25 yards but his effort curls away from goal without any real threat.
A long ball is controlled by Carroll and played to the feet of Suarez who charges into the box. Distin manages to dispossess the ball, but a dogged Suarez wins the ball back with a bit of luck and places the ball to the left of Howard with ease.
Goal!!! 2-0 Liverpool.
Liverpool look content playing deep now and defend their lead, counter attacking with the pace of Suarez and Bellamy, this is bringing Everton back into the game.
Steven Gerrard floats a ball into the box, taking out the whole defence but Howard reacts well to put it out for a corner as Carroll was making a good run into the far post.
How will Everton react, the goal has been coming for a while, maybe this will spark them into action.
Enrique overlaps Bellamy on the left wing and cuts the ball back to Carroll who is waiting in the middle of the box, and fires the ball low and hard into the bottom right hand corner giving Howard no chance of keeping a clean sheet.
Goal!!!!! Liverpool take the lead through Carroll
Gerrard delivers a good curling freekick behind the Everton defence but Suarez's header is poor and goes well over. I dont think he expected to win the ball over the Toffee's defence.
Craig Bellamy joins Gerrard on the pitch with Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing retiring to the bench. Everton really need to get themselves back into the game, its all Liverpool.
Gerrard is getting ready to come on, I wonder what the odds are on him getting the winning goal. He has a history of coming to the rescue in big games.
Fellaini is hurt, he's recieving treatment on his ankle after he picked up knock.
Saha finds himself in space 30 yards out, his shot skims across the turf at pace but flies just wide, it had Reina scrambling.
Royston Drenthe replaces Coleman, maybe the loanee can prove his quality to the home fans on the best stage possible.
Liverpool are really putting the pressure on 10 man Everton Jagielka and Distin are holding out though. Lucas shows signs of frustration with a shot from well out which sails into the crowd.
Carroll has a similar effort but this time Howard gets down well to stop the ball creeping into the bottom left hand corner. Howard is keeping Moyes' men in it today.
Carroll gets targeted from a cross and his powerful header is blocked by Distin on the line.
A good piece of play from Everton sees Saha get the ball on the edge of the box, but his resulting effort is never really troubling the goal, I think he wanted a lot more curl on the ball.
Yellow CardLucas Leiva
Cahill slides in well as Adam makes a run down the right, it was well timed but he doesn't seem to be showing any caution since picking up a yellow card in the first half.
Liverpool start the second half for us.
Half-time at Goodison. Liverpool really deserve to be up at the break, Howard's penalty save and the misfortune of Adam's shot hitting the crossbar has saved Everton's blushes. Moyes will be happy to stay level at the break, but will be annoyed with Rodwell's sending off.
45' + 2'
Charlie Adam fizzes a ball at goal from just outside the box, he takes Howard out of the situation but is only denied by the underside of the bar.
Penalty saveTim Howard
Missed PenaltyDirk Kuyt
Kuyt steps up to take it. Howard saves! What a stop from the American, he got down well to his left to turn it round the post for a corner.
Penalty!! Jagielka catches Suarez on the corner of the box, it was a foul he was just a bit to keen to snatch that away from Suarez.
A floated free kick on the half way line finds Fellaini in the Liverpool box, but the Belgian fails to control and it goes out for a goal kick. He is sure it took a nick off of the defender.
Adam's effort goes straight into the wall and Osman counter attacks but fails to find any supporting players and the attack fizzles out.
Liverpool have really calmed the game down by keeping possession in the middle of the park, but Fellaini goes in on Lucas and gives away a free kick well in range for Charlie Adam.
Suarez makes a good run into the box, and shoots from a tight angle and ball ends up in the side netting. Fellaini was running with the Uruguayan, he did well to sheppered him to the byline and block off a better chance of a shot.
Kelly delivers a searching ball into the box, Jagielka does well to get in front of Suarez who was in a good position.
Yellow CardTim Cahill
Cahill gets a yellow as he catches Charlie Adam with a high foot as the scot clears the ball, that was a worse challenge than Rodwell's but he's got away with it. The game is coming to the boil.
Did the referee get caught up in the moment? replays show that it wasn't as bad as Lucas Leiva was trying to make out to the ref. Suarez comes back on looking unscaved.
Red CardJack Rodwell
And Rodwell sees a straight red, only 22 minutes in. He showed his studs in a challenge on Suarez , he may feel hard done by, the Everton fans seem to think so.
A corner from Baines troubles Reina and he has to punch, but the unconvincing effort falls to the edge of the box but Coleman's piledriver fails to find it way through the cluttered box.
Saha tries a speculative shot from the right hand corner of the box, the ball curls towards the bottom corner of the net but runs just wide of the post.
After the corner Everton look to get the ball back into the box, but the cross is to long but is collected by Distin who puts it through the legs of Carragher but his shot goes over the bar.
Everton counter and a Cahill header is tipped just over over the bar from Reina.
Kuyt rescues a lost ball on the byline to the left of Howards goal and delivers a ball into Suarez who heads from yards out straight into the hands of the American.
Both side are going for this match, it look as if Martin Atkinson is going to be busy today.
Reina fumbles the delivery but regains the ball and gets rid of any danger.
Everton have a freekick in a similar area and float the ball in Skrtel is all over Saha and the crowd behind the goal let the ref know about, but the official gives nothing as the ball falls to Fellaini who's shot is deflected wide.
Hibbert takes down Downing after only a matter of seconds. Charlie Adam takes it quickly playing a 1-2 with Downing and drills in a cross from the edge of the box, but there is no threat from any Liverpool strikers.
And Everton kick of the Merseyside derby
Saying that, if Liverpool keep a cool head they could outclass Everton with the pace and skill of players like Downing and Suarez, and I think if Bellamy makes an appearance from the bench he could make a big difference.
This game could go either way, I'd say one of the closest Merseyside derby in recent years. Liverpool have shown weakness defensively this season and Everton's physical game could really trouble Dalglish's side.
Both have suffered an iffy start to the season, and this could be a great platform for either side to really kick-off their season.
We should be in for a fiery encounter, even though this clash is nicknamed 'the friendly derby' we have seen 10 red cards in the last 13 PL ties, and the chances are this one wont be any different.
Steven Gerrard again starts on the bench, but Tim Cahill has overcome the injury suffered against Manchester City last week in order to play in the derby.
Liverpool's starting XI: Liverpool: Reina; Kelly, Carragher, Skrtel, Enrique; Kuyt, Lucas, Adam, Downing; Suarez, Carroll. Subs: Doni, Gerrard, Henderson, Coates, Spearing, Flanagan, Bellamy.
Everton's starting XI is: Howard; Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Baines; Coleman, Rodwell, Fellaini, Osman; Cahill; Saha. Subs: Mucha, Bilyaletdinov, Drenthe, Stracqualursi, Neville, Barkley, Vellios.
Good afternoon and welcome to Goal.com's coverage of the Merseyside derby.
