Premier League Preview: Everton - Chelsea

Premier League Preview: Everton - Chelsea

Italian boss may lose his job even if he picks up a victory over David Moyes' side, who are unbeaten in 10 league matches at Goodison Park

PROBABLE LINE-UPS

Everton (4-5-1)
Howard; Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Baines; Coleman, Heitinga, Neville, Osman, Arteta; Anichebe.

With Tim Cahill having missed out away to West Brom with a foot complaint last week, a late decision will be taken on whether the talismanic Australian can recover in time for the final game of the season.

Both Louis Saha and Marouanne Fellaini will miss out with ankle trouble.

The Toffees are also set to be without Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, whose harsh red card last week sees him suspended against last season’s champions.

Chelsea (4-3-3)
Cech; Ivanovic, Alex, Terry, Cole; Ramires, McEachran, Lampard; Malouda, Torres, Drogba.

Josh McEachran looks set to be a part line-up again for the Blues, with Carlo Ancelotti looking to the future, even if he is not necessarily going to be a part of it.

Jose Bosingwa is Chelsea’s only player missing through injury, so the Italian looks likely to chop and change ahead of their clash with David Moyes’ men.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Everton have won their last three games on the last day of the season.
  • If David Moyes’ side were to win, both clubs would have 35 home victories over the other since the beginning of the Football League.
  • The Toffees are on a 10-match unbeaten run at home in the league.
  • With 11 assists, Leighton Baines has set up more goals than any other Premier League defender this season.
  • Chelsea have only beaten Everton once in their last eight meetings.
  • Only one of the last five meetings between the two sides has not ended in a draw.
  • Carlo Ancelotti’s men have the best defensive record in the league, conceding only 32 goals in 37 matches. This is an average of 0.86 goals-per-game.
  • The visitors have more 2-0 wins than anybody else in the Premier League, securing the result five times.
  • If the table was based on half-time scores, Chelsea would be out of the top four and Everton would be languishing in 14th.

Leighton Baines will be looking to prove that he is the best left-back in the Premier League when Ashley Cole rolls into town, with England facing Switzerland in due course at Wembley.

With 11 assists, Baines has been the most potent attacking defender this term and will be looking to finish a fantastic season on a high.

At only 18, the Young Player of the Season for Chelsea has time on his side if he is to fulfil his huge potential at the centre of midfield.

Having impressed last week against Newcastle United, many fans will be hoping that manager Carlo Ancelotti puts his faith in the Oxford-born playmaker once again as the club try and provide some playing time to one of the biggest talents in the country.
Prediction
If rumours are to be believed and this clash at Goodison is the final game for Carlo Ancelotti as Chelsea manager, it would be sad to see such a fine manager bow out with a defeat.

However, having ended the season superbly, it is difficult to imagine that Everton will be in a charitable mood, as they look to leave their fans with one last reason to cheer before they set off on their summer holidays.

Neither side will want to lose this one, and an entertaining draw could be on the cards.
