Mauricio Pochettino’s side are now just three points off the final European spot in La Liga after defeating visitors as the season continues to wind down to a close

Espanyol’s chances of qualifying for next season’s Europa League have increased after they defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at home in the Primera Division on Monday evening.

The Barcelona-based side went ahead after 35 minutes as Pablo Osvaldo found the target from the centre of the box.

However, Markel Susaeta equalised for the visiting Basque side just before half-time with a free-kick.

But Ivan Alonso’s strike on 76 minutes saw Espanyol secure the three points.

The result means that Athletic remain seventh in the league table, a point behind Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.

Espanyol stay eighth but are now just three points behind the Basque giants. Just four more rounds of matches remain in the championship this campaign.
