Live Commentary

  • However, Sam Allardyce will be delighted that his side scored much more freely today than in their last match and also put in a respectable defensive showing. More efforts like that should see West Ham away from the relegation zone this season. Thanks for joining us today!
  • Ultimately, a disappointing performance from the home side, who were trailing throughout the whole match and conceded two very good goals and one completely avoidable one. Chamakh's strike was not enough to overturn goals from Zarate, Downing, and Cole, and on today's evidence, Crystal Palace will certainly want to make a few signings before the window closes.
  • 90' + 4'
Williams gets on the end of a cross in the box after Vaz Te mistimes his jumping clearance but his effort is fired well wide! That's the final action of the match as it ends here. The final score is Crystal Palace 1:3 West Ham.
  • 90' + 3'
What a moment that was! Murray crosses a defender to fire a shot on goal near the left post but Adrian raises a hand to knock it away!
  • 90' + 2'
A late foray forward from Chamakh is met by Ward, who intercepts in the box and clears the danger.
  • 90' + 1'
In the first of four minutes of injury time and both sides look as though they've accepted the result. Palace fans are starting to walk out of the stadium.
  • 90'
    Substitution Stewart Downing Mohamed Diame
  • 90'
Downing comes off for Diame as Allardyce shakes the hand of the player who scored his side's vital second goal. Speroni reacts quickly to a surprising shot to save!
  • 89'
    Yellow Card Mile Jedinak
  • 89'
West Ham get another late surge towards the goal, but cautiously keep possession instead of pulling the trigger. The visitors are understandably trying to spend some time away from their own defence and Jedinak is booked as he pushes a player in frustration.
  • 87'
Williams does very well to keep the ball after a failed give and go. Palace continually cross the ball into the box but are having no luck reaching teammates.
  • 86'
Sustained pressure from Palace outside the box, working it back and forth down the left looking for a cross. They find an opening and swing it in but Reid heads it away.
  • 85'
Williams is taken down and wins a free-kick. Jedinak lifts it forward but it's headed clear.
  • 83'
    Substitution Stuart O'Keefe Glenn Murray
O'Keefe for Murray as well, as Palace add another body up front in an effort to try and nab something from this game as it enters the final spell.
  • 83'
    Substitution M. Zárate Diego Poyet
  • 82'
The corner is flicked on twice before being cleared wide but Palace still have possession deep in West Ham's territory. They lose it when a poor ball played over the top fails to reach Chamakh. Zarate comes off immediately after for Poyet.
  • 81'
And that's better from Palace! Reid has to block after a well worked move around the box leads to a shot from wide on the right side.
  • 80'
West Ham have been rather comfortable for nearly the entire match now; even at 3-1 up they're enjoying spells of sustained possession in and around Palace's box and are soaking up pressure quickly when the home side break.
  • 79'
Jedinak concedes a free-kick to West Ham on the left of the box which almost slips in at the near post! Kouyate acrobatically tries to deflect the ball into the goal with his body but it fizzles wide.
  • 78'
Very solid save from Speroni on a Sakho header that was just about to creep into the near post before being punched out for a corner!
  • 77'
Jednak's looping free-kick fails to reach any of his teammates, and Palace's possession ends with a clumsy challenge by Kelly. Time is running out for Palace!
  • 75'
    Yellow Card Joey O'Brien
Nothing is coming off for Palace at the moment, as a ball looking for Chamakh is easily cut out. O'Brien enters the book seconds later as he lunges into Williams, missing the ball completely.
  • 74'
Gayle is down injured, creating a pause in play that lets some of the players grab a quick sip of water. West Ham push quickly, losing the ball down the left and letting Palace's centre-backs have possession.
  • 72'
Sakho is involved once again, racing down the left but his final touch goes out for a Crystal Palace goal kick. Williams gets involved quickly with a header towards Chamakh that goes well wide of the stirker.
  • 71'
    Substitution Barry Bannan Jonathan Williams
  • 70'
    Substitution Fraizer Campbell Dwight Gayle
The corner is cleared and Chamakh goes down shortly after holding his left knee. Palace make two changes, with Campbell off for Gayle and Bannan off for Williams.
  • 70'
20 minutes left here for Palace to try and score twice to take a point from this, but West Ham currently have the ball and continually use Vaz Te as a reference point. The home side are content to sit back and soak up the pressure.
  • 68'
    Substitution Carlton Cole Diafra Sakho
The delivery doesn't fall right to the keeper but it's nevertheless headed clear by the centre-backs. Cole comes off, having scored a vital goal five minutes ago, for Sakho.
  • 68'
Sakho is an interesting player, making his debut for West Ham after having won Ligue 2 last season with Metz and  20 goals in 37 games and immediately earning a corner as Ward deflects his shot wide.
  • 66'
Fantastic ball down the pitch to Noble from O'Brien, but it's cleared easily and Palace race down the pitch to win a corner themselves.
  • 65'
Since the goal, Palace have looked deflated. West Ham are no longer surging forward but are containing any threat the home side present them well.
  • 63'
Palace will have to try and claw their way back from a two goal deficit once again and will be furious with themselves for letting such a preventable opportunity from becoming a goal. Poor marking and a poor clearance has cost them dearly now!
  • 62'
    Goal Carlton Cole
COLE RESTORES THE LEAD!!! 3-1 WEST HAM! That's as simple as you like - the free-kick is played right down the pitch, Delaney fails to clear it properly, and it falls right to Cole to easily fire past Speroni!
  • 61'
O'Keefe fouls Noble to give West Ham a free kick high in their own half. Both sides look like they have substitutes getting ready to come on.
  • 60'
West Ham's defence launches a surging ball in towards Vaz Te but it's short and easy for Speroni to collect. Given how the match has been so far, these past few minutes have been quiet from both sides.
  • 58'
No way past an increasingly clogged midfield until a poor clearance from West Ham lets Campbell race forward. He fakes a shot once too many times before falling over the ball in the box, furious at himeself for letting that chance go begging.
  • 57'
Both sides are just racing to get to each other's boxes now. To their credit, West Ham are slowly growing back into the match as they were before but the midfield play is rather sloppy at the moment from both sides.
  • 55'
Bannan gets the ball in space just in front of the box, takes a touch, and smacks a shot on target right at Adrian! The home side have a spring to their step now and truly believe the equalizer is just around the corner.
  • 54'
It comes to nothing for the home side, as Jedinak whips it in a little too deep and Palace's players fail to gain enough space to let a shot off. West Ham use the opportunity to keep the ball and press forward down the left via Vaz Te.
  • 53'
This time, the corner is played short. Bannan pulls off a lovely dribbling move before laying it off to Bolasie, who Zarate bundles over. Palace have a free kick now and the pressure is mounting...
  • 52'
Palace continue to press and are rewarded for their efforts with a corner kick. Jedinak plays it into the far post and it's headed out for another corner.
  • 51'
Sustained possession deep in the right part of West Ham's half comes to nothing as several crosses are headed away by West Ham's defence.
  • 50'
That's exactly what Palace were looking for; an immediate response in this half to build off of and shift momentum their way. Immediately following the goal, however, West Ham are doing well to try and keep the ball, albeit more conservatively than they were before.
  • 48'
    Assist Mile Jedinak
  • 48'
    Goal Marouane Chamakh
GOOOALLL PALACE! From nearly 3-0 to 2-1 in a matter of seconds! Jedinak flicks the ball to the middle of the pitch to Chamakh, who takes one touch before rifling it into the far post!!!! GAME ON!
  • 48'
VERY NEARLY A THIRD! From the corner, Speroni rushes out and misses it entirely. Tomkins takes a header unopposed but it bounces off the crossbar and into the relieved arms of Speroni!!
  • 47'
West Hame counter and it takes an awkward clearance from Delaney to keep a cross from getting into the box. The ensuing corner is delayed as Vaz Te barges into Speroni and Clattenburg has a word with the West Ham player.
  • 46'
The second half is underway! The home side begin immediately looking for Campbell up front with a probing through ball but he's offside.
  • For the second half, Palace simply has to get possessoin of the ball and be more clever up front. A quick goal can easily turn this game on its head, but the longer West Ham maintain their two goal lead, the more desperate the home side are likely to become.
  • The first half was incredibly comfortable for the visitors, who had the vast majority of shots and chances, as well as cohesion and possession. Their two goals were fantastic individual strikes but came about due to having a well worked plan when they roam forward - something that can't be said about Palace.
  • 45' + 3'
Kouyate is kicked in the face as Palace chase their first goal, which is the final action in the first half. The two teams walk into the tunnel with the visitors ahead after two fantastic goals; it's Crystal Palace 0-2 West Ham at the break.
  • 45' + 2'
A well worked team-move sees the ball played short and passed to Delaney, who's only able to fire into the side netting from wide in the box. Not good enough from Palace.
  • 45' + 1'
    Yellow Card James Tomkins
Tomkins is booked now, joining his fellow centre-back, and Palace have a free-kick in a superb, central position not far outside the box.
  • 44'
Cresswell whips a quick cross across the goal that sails just behind Cole. West Ham are delivering solid opportunities and crosses far too easily at the moment.
  • 43'
Palace are doing themselves no favours at the moment, playing the ball directly over the line after a long pass fails to find a teammate. There will need to be a far improved second half performance from the home side to take anything from this match.
  • 42'
This dominating half from the visitors has not quieted the fans at Selhurst Park, who continue to belt out songs in support of their side. Vaz Te intercepts a bad pass from the defense and fires a powerful shot that Speroni parries and collects.
  • 41'
Jedinak is finally able to clear the ball from the home side but the middle of the pitch has become scrappier now. Both sides are committed rough fouls and sliding in for the ball very physically.
  • 40'
    Yellow Card Winston Reid
There's no doubt about those two goals - both of top quality and both fully deserved for the visitors. Nothing is easy for the home side at the moment, but they recieve a reprieve as Chamakh wins a free kick after a bad challenge from behind from Reid, who is booked.
  • 37'
    Assist Cheikhou Kouyaté
  • 37'
    Goal Stewart Downing
A FANTASTIC SECOND FOR WEST HAM! AND THIS IS QUICKLY GETTING OUT OF HAND FOR PALACE!!! Downing takes the ball down the right on the counter, dribbles in towards the box, and beautifully bends the ball around Speroni as he rushes out of his goal!! 2-0 to the visitors and Big Sam is elated!
  • 36'
West Ham nearly score a second here, as Crystal Palace are in danger of letting this become even worse if things don't change very soon. The visitors are playing like the home side now and the home side don't look like they have much of a plan at the moment.
  • 34'
    Goal M. Zárate
... BUT IS EXQUISITELY SLICED INTO THE NET ON THE VOLLEY BY ZARATE!!! WHAT A SUPERB GOAL! Noble's shot was blocked and deflected and on the fly from outside the box, the new signing takes a splendid shot that ends up in the top corner!!! 1-0 to the visitors and it's no less than they deserve!!
  • 33'
Yet another corner for West Ham, after Vaz Te and Zarate's clever passing in the box goes out. It's taken short and cleared...
  • 32'
Downing takes a corner from the other side of the pitch but it turns out to be equally ineffective, as Speroni catches yet another delivery from West Ham. For all the good the side has done from open play, their delivery from corners has been very disappointing.
  • 31'
The home side are pressing a little bit higher now, which is working to relieve their defence; West Ham are keeping the ball but are being hurried into passes that's preventing them from getting it wide as they like.
  • 30'
Palace's best spell in some minutes near the box ends as Chamakh commits a foul desperately trying to keep the ball that was just running away from him.
  • 28'
Campbell nearly on the end of a good pass there but it's collected by Adrian. Palace look increasingly out of this match; it's all West Ham at the moment.
  • 27'
The home side take the ball forward briefly but simply cannot keep it at the moment. West Ham buildup pateintly from the back, using Vaz Te as an outlet. The ball is squared right to Zarate in the box but his touch is too heavy and the ball goes out of play! Another poor moment from the player, who is becoming increasingly influential.
  • 26'
Another chance goes begging! The corner is played back across goal right to Zarate's head but the Argentine can only fire directly at Speroni! Ohhh he'll want that chance back!
  • 25'
Downing swings in a fantastic cross that O'Keefe just pokes clear before it can reach Cole! This is a fantastic spell for the Hammers!
  • 24'
Much better from the visitors! They work the ball down the right wing and fire another cross in for Cole, who interplays with his teammates before a shot is deflected wide! The ensuing corner is cleared but the visitors have relentless pressure to keep possession.
  • 23'
West Ham keep the ball in the midfield well but find Palace's defence a brick wall at the moment.
  • 21'
Meanwhile, O'Keefe - a last minute swap into the starting eleven when Ledley hurt himself in the warmup - comes off worse for the wear after a sharp challenge from Zarate and comes off the pitch temporarily for treatment, before jogging back on.
  • 20'
Bolasie is fouled in the build up towards the box; referee Mark Clattenburg plays advantage and the home side might count themselves unfortunate as they miscontrol the ball a few seconds later to gift play back to the visitors.
  • 19'
West Ham down the right wing now as O'Brien whips a cross into Cole, who's header goes to Speroni's left but the goalkeeper catches it easily.
  • 18'
Sam Allardyce's men certainly don't look uncomfortable so far today, doing very well to keep possession when they have it and pushing forward down the left wing.
  • 16'
The visitors now are just trying to ease the burden on their defence, playing the ball smartly wide before working it to the wing and getting a deflection from Bannan for a corner. Speroni collects it easily; another poor delivery from Noble there.
  • 14'
Wonderful play from the the home side! A cross is lofted into the box that Chamakh chests down onto the path of Jedinak, who runs onto it and fires towards goal. Tomkins races to block the shot before it can reach the net.
  • 13'
Adrian's turn to get involved now, jumping high to get on the end of an effort played in from the home side's right wing. Whichever side can get these crosses on the head of their strikers first may well be the winner today.
  • 12'
The corner comes to nothing as Noble plays it to the far post but far too close to Speroni. Downing looks shaken a bit from the tackle that lead to the set peice, wanting a free-kick for Jedinak's challenge.
  • 11'
Nearly a chance for the visitors here - Cole receives a cross with his back towards goal but can't turn to shoot. He plays it to Zarate on the edge of the box who's shot is blocked and knocked out of the box, but the visitors regain possession. Eventually Downing takes a shot that goes off Jedinak for a corner.
  • 9'
A very well timed tackle from Jedinak lets the home side break free. Bolasie gets the ball near the box but commits a foul to give the visitors a free-kick.
  • 8'
Play has become a little frantic in the midfield. Crystal Palace are slowly working their way forward but wayward passing from both sides means neither is able to maintain possession.
  • 6'
First save of the match for West Ham! Campbell rises high to head a cross down into the ground towards the goal - luckily for Adrian, it bounces near his right arm and he's able to collect it without much fuss.
  • 5'
The first good foray forward from the home side comes from fantastic pressing high up the pitch as Chamakh wins the ball. Kelly drives into the box, dribbles his way to the byline and crosses for Chamakh as the visitors head it clear for a corner!
  • 4'
Noble swings the free kick deep to the far post, looking for the head of Tomkins, but there's a foul in the box and a free-kick is awarded to the home side for Speroni to knock forward.
  • 3'
Hangeland again a protagonist here, taking down Zarate after a mazy run through the midfield. West Ham have a free kick in a central position, roughly 12 yards outside the box.
  • 2'
Kelly commits a foul high in his own half, which Noble stands over. He whips a ball deep into the box that Hangeland powerfuly heads clear, giving his side a chance to regroup. The visitors look comfortable in these very early moments.
  • 1'
And we have kick-off! West Ham quickly play the ball back from kickoff before trying to get it to Vaz Te on the left wing. He eventually gets to it, pushing forward. An early cross is whipped into the home side's box before being headed away by Hangeland.
  • The two sides are walking out of the tunnel now at Selhurst Park and the match will be underway shortly. Can Palace hope to achieve what they did last season without Tony Pulis? Can West Ham's new signings bring more goals to the side? This match won't be able to tell us all that, but could give either side a much needed boost very early this season!
  • Conversely, the home side will want to look at generating more chances today than they were able to last match at the Emirates. It's never easy for a side like Crystal Palace to maintain possession or the majority of chances against a team like Arsenal, and they did nearly hang on for a draw, but scored off of their only shot on target of the match. A solid foundation, but one that can be improved on.
  • One thing the visitors will want to improve on quickly: converting shots into goals. The BBC notes that they took 18 shots against Tottenham last week but failed to score on any of them. Continuing to generate that many chances will be vital for West Ham this season, and it's still very early, but three of the last five meetings between Crystal Palace and this side have ended in 1-0 draws for the Eagles; one goal may be all it takes today as well.
  • For the match, the off-field antics will have to be pushed from the mind of the home side who have historically struggled in the league against West Ham, with only 5 wins in 26 meetings between the two. Recent history is kinder to Crystal Palace, who won home and away over West Ham last season.
  • New signing Mauro Zarate will be making his first start of the season today against West Ham, though Crystal Palace's incredibly dramatic and shocking hunt for a new manager has taken the spotlight this week over the new recruits as allegations involving Malky Mackay have come to light.
  • West Ham (4-2-3-1): Adrian; Cresswell, Tomkins, Reid, O'Brien; Kouyate, Noble; Downing, Zarate, Ricardo Vaz Te; Cole.
  • Crystal Palace (4-4-1-1): Speroni; Ward, Delaney, Hangeland, Kelly; Bolasie, Jedinak, Ledley, Bannan; Chamakh; Campbell.
  • The home side today took a surprising lead against Arsenal before suffering goals on the stroke of halftime and fulltime, with a red card to Jason Puncheon further marring proceedings. Sam Allardyce's men, meanwhile, failed to take advantage of Kyle Naughton's sending off at home against Tottenham before Eric Dier's winner in the dying moments of the game, in a match where James Collins received his marching orders for a second yellow during the second half.
  • Needless to say, then, the home side will greatly miss winger Puncheon, who was last season's joint top scorer, and the visitors will have to contend with Collins' absence today. Furthermore, Ravel Morrison, Andy Carroll, and Scott Dann are all sidelined as well and unable to take part in today's proceedings.
  • Hello all and welcome to our live match coverage of Crystal Palace vs. West Ham! The second match-day of the 2014-2015 Barclay's Premier League will see these two sides face off, hungry for their first points of the season after both suffered eeirely similar narrow losses last matchday.
