FA Community Shield
August 12, 2012
• Villa Park, Birmingham
Referee: K. Friend
• Attendance: 36394
An excellent second-half performance from Manchester City saw goals from Yaya Toure, Tevez and Nasri cancel out Torres' opener for Chelsea, who found it hard to compete following the dismissal of Ivanovic after 42 minutes. Di Matteo's men threatened a revival through Bertrand's late effort but it was too little too late.
And that's full-time at Villa Park. Manchester City run out 3-2 victors over Chelsea to win the Community Shield.
90' + 3'
City now have the ball in the corner and Silva takes the opportunity to showcase his skills as he wriggles free in the Chelsea box. Nothing comes of it though.
90' + 1'
And again City squander another. Dzeko this time has the chance to race clear but the striker delays and is caught up by Terry who makes the block.
City again spurn a good chance to make it four as Milner crosses again from the right. His ball is met by Aguero but the Argentine from six yards out scuffs his effort wide of Cech's right-hand post.
City almost snatch a fourth as they pile forward in anticipation of Milner's cross from the right flank. The midfielder's delivery is good but the ball eludes Yaya Toure and subsequently catches David Silva unaware.
City get back into their rhythm and keep the ball from Chelsea for a long spell. Mancini's men are determined to see this game out as if it was a Premier League tie.
Chelsea have a spring in their step after that goal and are looking to pull level. City, through Aguero and Tevez, are not offering much in attack.
Both Pantilimon and Bertrand were booked in the aftermath of that goal after the City goalkeeper refused to give the ball to Ramires and Bertrand, who wanted to get play back underway as quickly as possible. Handbags.
Yellow Card Costel Pantilimon
Yellow Card Ryan Bertrand
Goal Ryan Bertrand
A horrendous mistake by Pantilimon has given Chelsea a lifeline. A one-two between Torres and Sturridge sees the latter strike low towards City's goal. Pantilimon got down low and should of held, he didn't, and Bertrand was on hand to tap the ball into the net.
Lampard flattens Milner on City's right wing but escapes a second booking. The free-kick is met by Kompany on the edge of the area but the defender's shot is blocked and cleared by Terry.
Second substitution for Manchester City sees Nasri come off for David Silva which is greeted with a large cheer at Villa Park.
A second substitution for Chelsea sees Juan Mata replaced by Daniel Sturridge. The former City man is on the right flank for the European champions, rather than up front with Torres.
Chelsea now chasing and chasing as City are stroking the ball around. The Premier League champions look content with this score.
Hazard is now off for Chelsea. Bertrand has replaced the Belgian, who has only shown in glimpses what he is capable of today.
This just in from Greg Stobart at Villa Park: "The City supporters are enjoying this, cheering every completed pass and watching their side rip Chelsea apart with the speed and quality of their attacking play. Roberto Mancini may be unhappy with the lack of summer signings but on this evidence they will be hot favourites to retain the Premier League title this season."
City are dominating now in all areas of the pitch. Torres looks a frustrated figure in attack and Hazard has just been dispossessed by an excellent tackle from Zabaleta.
Assist Aleksandar Kolarov
Goal Samir Nasri
And that's three for City. Chelsea allow too much time for Tevez to slip in Kolarov on City's left flank and the full-back's cross is met with a glancing touch from Nasri. Neat finish. Chelsea are in a world of trouble.
Yellow Card Ashley Cole
Again Chelsea have every player inside their own half defending. City have enough time on the ball and Yaya Toure nearly slips through Milner. There could be more goals here.
Chelsea are really struggling now. Punished for dropping too deep they now find themselves behind. Two fantastic striker from Yaya Toure and Tevez, though.
Assist Samir Nasri
Goal Carlos Tévez
Superb strike by Tevez. The Argentine picks the ball up on City's right flank just outside of Chelsea's area, after he cuts inside he lashes the ball past Cech who could do nothing.
Greg Stobart from Villa Park: "Lots of commotion down below the press box in the City end. I *think* a mascot - you know, the furry guy who runs around on the pitch at half-time - has just had a punch-up with a supporter. And indeed the supporter has just been ejected from the stadium."
City have their tails up now and Chelsea have every man back inside their own half. Nasri's cross on the left flank is inviting but Milner is unable to meet it.
Goal Yaya Touré
Fantastic strike from Yaya Toure to level the scores at Villa Park. Neat build-up play by City finds Milner on the right flank and while the midfielder's cross was cut out by Terry, the Ivorian met the ball on the edge of the area and lashed the ball low past Cech.
Chelsea are finding space and passing crisply even though they are a man down. City look lost for ideas in attack. Aguero and Tevez both look subdued in the opening stages.
Yellow Card Vincent Kompany
Another yellow card and this time Kompany is the recipient after he bodychecked Torres in City's half.
Ramires has filled in at right-back in the place of Ivanovic, who was dismissed before half-time for a challenge on Kolarov.
Cech is forced out of his goal to clear but the ball finds Kolarov who attempts a speculative lob but finds the stands with his effort.
Chelsea get us underway for the second half.
Greg Stobart gives us this from Villa Park: "City defender Gael Clichy is being put through his paces during the interval, it looks like he could well be introduced for the start of the second-half."
Opinions are divided on Ivanovic's challenge. The Serb's left foot went in first and both feet were raised. Difficult decision for the referee that one.
Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong has just tweeted: "Looks like u can't tackle this year I might aswell pack in and retire.. Ref acting a bit leaveit"
So Torres has handed Chelsea a half-time lead but the European champions are down to ten men following Ivanovic's straight red. There's also been four yellow cards dished out by Kevin Friend.
And that's the half-time whistle.
45' + 1'
Yellow Card Frank Lampard
Lampard now enters the book for his challenge right in front of the dugout. Mikel was also booked a minute before.
City have upped the pressure since Ivanovic's dismissal but Chelsea are holding firm for now.
Yellow Card John Obi Mikel
Red Card Branislav Ivanovic
Ivanovic has slid into Kolarov and referee Kevin Friend has handed the full-back a straight red for that challenge. Both feet were raised but it was a low challenge and one foot followed the other.
Goal Fernando Torres
Good build-up again for Chelsea. Ramires shows good feet on the edge of City's area and eventually slips Torres through who lifts the ball over Pantilimon. Calm finish from the Spaniard.
Kompany is player very, very deep for City at the back. Chelsea haven't yet opted to push Torres right on the Belgian.
Tevez sends Aguero on a chase down City's left but Luiz deals with the threat. Both sides struggling to break through to fashion clear-cut chances at the moment.
Chelsea seem to be getting into this game in fits and starts. Another spell of possession eventually leads to Ramires getting the ball on the edge of City's area, but the Brazilian's lofted through ball to Hazard is cut out by Pantilimon.
Cole has another speculative long-range strike for Chelsea which sails over City's crossbar.
Yellow Card Ramires
Another word on City's formation and both Yaya Toure and De Jong are sitting deep in midfield. Mancini's men are struggling to bridge that long gap between midfield and attack.
Ramires is now the second player to enter the book following a challenge on Nasri.
It's now City's turn to attack after Nasri finds space close to the corner flag on his side's right. The Frenchman cuts the ball back to Tevez whose shot is block. Milner's follow-up effort is also blocked.
Chelsea are starting to perk up and this time Hazard's long-range strike tests Pantilimon with a low effort. The City goalkeeper saves comfortably though.
Chelsea win a corner on the left. It's taken short and eventually the ball finds Mikel who fires over from about 35 yards.
City have looked more comfortable on the ball. Chelsea have found it difficult to mount any kind of threat in attack.
It's now Chelsea's turn to attack and a storming run from Ramires on his side's right ends with the Brazilian finding Lampard's feet in the box, but his shot is straight at Pantilimon.
Aguero spurns a decent chance for City. Good build-up play from Mancini's men found Milner on the right and the midfielder crossed neatly for the Argentine who glanced his header wide.
And a second update from Greg in quick succession: "The City section of Villa Park has filled up significantly since kick-off and they and now making plenty of noise as the action also picks up on the pitch. I’m don’t think the City players look very comfortable with the 3-5-2 formation Roberto Mancini has asked them to play but they are starting to control the game now."
Greg Stobart reports from Villa Park: "That Eden Hazard moment was greeted with much hilarity in the stands and in the press box, where seconds earlier I’d turned to my colleague Jay Jaffa and remarked on how comfortable the Belgian attacker looks on the ball."
Hazard finds space on Chelsea's left but the midfielder has tripped over his own feet after attempting a backheel. It's met with jeers from the crowd.
Kompany meets Milner's corner but the Belgian heads straight at Cech.
City win yet another corner. Tevez earned a corner off Luiz down his side's left.
More on this formation for City. Kompany is essentially a sweep for Mancini's side with Zabaleta and Savic either side. Seems to be working so far as Torres has had little to go on.
City have yet another corner. Cech fends off the cross from Kolarov and City have a throw on their left flank.
Corner for City which is cleared again, fairly easily, by Chelsea. Set-pieces from both sides have been poor so far.
This midfield battle is shaping up to be a good one. De Jong's threaded pass is cut out but the Dutchman strives to rescue possession back from Ramires.
Tevez attempts to slip Milner in on City's right flank but Cole covers easily.
In the build-up to that free kick, Savic was booked for clipping the heel of Hazard. Appeared to be the centre-back's first foul as well.
But Juan Mata over-hits the cross and it goes out for a goal kick.
Torres draws a foul from Yaya Toure for a high foot. Decent position on Chelsea's right flank for a cross.
Yellow Card Stefan Savic
Mikel gets caught in possession and Tevez attempts to capitalise before being brought down by Luiz. No foul given.
Yaya Toure is playing in a deep midfield position, far from both Tevez and Aguero. His pass to the latter was cut out.
Chelsea are struggling to keep possession for long spells. Ramires' shaky touch hands it back to the Premier League champions before Torres loses out to Kompany, again.
Another ball in on Manchester City's right flank and Frank Lampard clears easily.
Manchester City are now stroking the ball at the back and a ball forward eventually wins a corner. Nothing came of it, though.
Luiz now brings down Augero just inside Chelsea's own half. This game has a decent tempo for a friendly.
Hazard spins nicely away from Milner on Chelsea's left and is brought down by Yaya Toure. No foul given and the Belgian protests.
Chelsea win a free kick down their right flank after Kolarov pulls down Ramires.
Cech is forced to make the first save of the afternoon from Tevez's free kick. Comfortable stop, though.
Chelsea have the chance to break as Mata feeds Torres but Kompany storms out and robs the Spaniard of possession.
Chelsea enjoy a spell of possession in the opening. Lampard, Hazard, Mikel, Torres and Ramires all linking up.
And Manchester City get us underway at Villa Park.
From the initial line-up for Manchester City, they are lining up with three at the back, something which they've used throughout pre-season.
Greg's just off for a change of underwear.
Another update from Greg Stobart at Villa Park: "Heart-stopping moment for much of the press box here as flames are unexpectedly sent up with quite a bang as the two teams come out of the tunnel. For a split second I thought we had a major story on our hands."
Now it's the handshakes and the national anthem. It all looks very formal despite the smattering of empty seats.
Both teams are in the tunnel milling about. John Terry and Vincent Kompany both look focused.
More from Greg Stobart at Villa Park: "Looking around the stadium, I’d expect quite a few empty seats today. It’s an unfamiliar venue for the Community Shield to be staged and, with so much attention on the Olympics recently, it does feel rather flat. I was at the Manchester derby a year ago at Wembley and there was a completely different atmosphere at that match."
Eden Hazard has been handed a start for Chelsea. "He's got great ability, a final pass, he scored a lot in France," said Roberto Di Matteo. "Hopefully he can slot into our team."
"I can say we consider Jack a good player, a young player, he will be an important midfielder for England in the future and for us.," said Mancini. "He's a player with a good attitude. He will be an important player for the future."
Everton have also accepted Manchester City's bid for Jack Rodwell this lunchtime.
Roberto Mancini said this when asked if his team can stay top of the pile: "This is our target but it is clear now we won the last Premier League but it is important that we continue to work because everything can change in one year. If you are lucky you can win one trophy but after it is difficult to stay at the top."
We've got this from our man at the ground, Greg Stobart: "Good afternoon from a wet and windy Villa Park, where the rain is belting down ahead of the curtain-raiser for the new season. We’re expecting to be treated to some ‘entertainment’ from a Dizzee Rascal wannabe I’ve never heard of but, hilariously, the sound system here isn’t working."
If you're wondering where Joe Hart is he is suffering from a back injury. Mario Balotelli has conjunctivitis which is why he is not named on the bench.
Manchester City: Pantilimon; Zabaleta, Kompany, Kolarov, Clichy; Milner, De Jong, Yaya Toure; Nasri, Aguero, Tevez Subs: Johansen, Clichy, Kolo Toure, Silva, Johnson, Razak, Dzeko.
Chelsea: Cech; Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Cole; Lampard, Mikel, Ramires; Mata, Hazard; Torres Subs: Turnbull, Cahill, Bertrand, Meireles, Piazon, Sturridge.
Afternoon all, welcome to Goal.com's coverage of the Community Shield. The teams are already in, so without further ado...
