Serie A Preview: Cesena – Lazio

The Aquile will aim to return to winning ways after their defeat to Roma in the Rome derby at the weekend…

Going Down And Down

Cesena’s struggles know no bounds as the Seahorses are sinking further and further into the relegation mire. Last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Juventus in Turin in Serie A was their fourth loss in a row in all competitions and their seventh defeat in eight games.

Cesena are currently stationed second from bottom in Serie A with just eight points from ten matches. Massimo Ficcadenti’s side are level on points with Parma, who are 18th, and two points behind Brescia, who are just a place above them.

Coach Ficcadenti, though, remains defiant in the face of adversity and says, "We know we are a team destined to suffer this season. But we have to continue to battle in order to get out of this difficult situation and start earning points.''

Recovering From Derby Defeat

Lazio must still be smarting from their 2-0 defeat to Roma in Serie A on Sunday. It was the Aquile’s first real test of the campaign and they failed, raising apprehensions on their Scudetto credentials.

Nevertheless, Lazio are still in pole position in the league with 22 points from 10 matches, two points ahead of second-placed Milan. A win against second-from-bottom Cesena will be a nice way for the former Italian champions to bounce back.

Coach Edy Reja has rallied his troops to show their calibre and put the defeat to Roma behind them, saying, "We must forget the disappointment of the derby and get back on track immediately.

"The imperative now is to turn the page. The chapter of the derby must be closed. We are still in first place and looking ahead to the next match.

"We should be proud of what we are doing. We should turn our anger into something positive on Wednesday night against Cesena."

Budan and Caserta are unavailable because of injuries while Pellegrino is suspended. Cesena will start in a 4-3-2-1 formation that will have Bogdani as the lone striker upfront with Giaccherini and Jimenez as the two attacking midfielders behind him.

Meghni and Quadri are unavailable because of injuries and playmaker Hernanes has been rested for the match. Edy Reja will change his formation and go with a 4-2-3-1 system that will have Floccari as the lone forward upfront with Foggia, Mauri and Zarate are the three attacking midfielders. is proud to be a premier partner of and as such is pleased to offer exclusive invitations to our users to become a participant in the Alpha launch of the new Click here for your access code for the alpha site - act now as invitations are limited!

Antonioli will have to be on top of his game and remain alert throughout the 90 minutes in the Cesena goal. Lazio will be smarting after their Rome derby defeat at the weekend and will be raring to score goals, meaning that they will put Antonioli under intense pressure.

Stefano Mauri

Mauri will play down the centre against Cesena on Wednesday and will essentially play Hernanes role. Mauri has been one of the best players for Lazio so far this campaign and will be difficult to contain by the Cesena defence.
