Cameroon 1-0 DR Congo: Choupo-Moting hands the Indomitable Lions victory

Bongarts

Despite playing host to the Leopards from neighbouring DR Congo, the Indomitable Lions had to struggle throughout the meeting to scramble and conserve a one-goal win

Cameroon defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 on Saturday at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium in Yaounde in the second round qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

Mainz 05 striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting delivered the winner for the home side minutes after the break through a penalty kick he had to take twice after the referee judged the Congolese goalkeeper to have faulted by moving forward.

The Indomitable Lions began with much confidence and tried to impose dominance early on in the clash, but DR Congo’s defence was solid and able to withstand the assaults from the opposite direction.

Despite the absence of a couple of key players such as Samuel Eto’o, who is facing an eight-month suspension, as well as Enoh Eyong and Nkoulou, Cameroon had their usual aggressive form but could not find a breach in the first half following the Leopards' impressive attacking and defending mode.

Back from the break, the host team was in the ascendancy once again, with Choupo-Moting dropping deep into Congo's box, but the danger was cleared by defender Albert Milambo, resulting in a penalty, which the Mainz 23-year-old forward successfully transformed after taking the kick twice.

Congo struggled for an equaliser but to no avail as the final whistle ended their hopes of salvaging something from the match.

Cameroon will face Libya next weekend in the Tunisian city of Sfax for the third round.
