Copa America preview: Brazil - Ecuador

The Selecao, who needed a late equaliser against Paraguay at the weekend, must improve against Ecuador if they are to progress to the last eight of the Copa America

PROBABLE LINE-UPS
Brazil: Julio Cesar; Daniel Alves, Lucio, Thiago Silva, Andre Santos; Lucas Leiva, Ramires; Jadson, Ganso, Neymar; Alexandre Pato

Mano Menezes looks set to call on his strongest side for the important clash against La Tri. The Selecao coach started with Jadson ahead of Robinho against Paraguay, yet it is unknown if he will follow the same route. Tottenham midfielder Sandro has also withdrawn from the squad, citing a knee injury. Having seen rivals Argentina qualify in their final group game, the five-time world champions know that only a much-improved display will see them progress.

Ecuador: Elizaga; Reasco, Araujo, Erazo, Ayovi; Castillo, Noboa, Mendez, Arroyo; Benitez, Caicedo

Reinaldo Rueda is again without Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia, who picked up an ankle injury in the first match against Paraguay and the coach has maintained that he will not be risked. Otherwise, Ecuador remain unchanged. They are also in contention for a place in the last eight, but only if they overcome the defending champions.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Brazil are the defending champions of the Copa America, having won in Venezuela in 2007.
  • The Selecao however, are still not assured of a quarter-final place, and will only qualify for the last eight if they do not lose to Ecuador.
  • Brazil have only lost once to Ecuador in seven previous encounters.
  • Mano Menezes' men needed a late Fred equaliser to salvage a draw against Paraguay on Saturday. The unconvincing result leaves them 3rd in Group B, level on points with Paraguay and one behind leaders Venezuela.
  • Ecuador are draw specialists of late, with Rueda's side on a run of six straight ties in 2011 before last weekend.
  • La Tri's 1-0 defeat to Venezuela thanks to a stunning Cesar Gonzalez strike has seen Rueda's side sit bottom of Group B. Nevertheless, the Ecuadorians are stlll in contention to qualify if they beat Mano Menezes' men in Cordoba.
  • Ecuador are winless in eight consecutive games. Their previous victory came in a 4-1 thrashing of Venezuela, whom they were defeated by in their last game.
  • Ecuador held Brazil to a 1-1 draw in their last head-to-head meeting, with Christian Noboa striking in the 89th minute to deny the Selecao in 2009.

The much-coveted wonderkid has been largely disappointing in the Copa America so far. But the Santos hitman, who endured some jeers and whistles against Paraguay, could well answer his critics with an explosive performance against Ecuador. The ridiculously talented youngster will prove a handful for any defence, and this may well show on Wednesday evening.

M. Elizaga

The 39-year-old veteran will have to perform impressively for La Tri if he is to thwart Brazil's considerable attacking arsenal. The goalkeeper, who played superbly the last time Ecuador were in this position in 2007, ironically against Brazil was beaten only by a Robinho penalty as his side were eliminated. Could he perform the same and keep Reinaldo Rueda's men in the competition?

Editor's Prediction

Despite indifferent performances of late, the Selecao are odds-on favourites to qualify for the last eight. Just like Argentina dug themselves out of a hole in Group A, Brazil are expected to come to life with an assured performances and redeem themselves by securing a safe passage into the quarter-finals. A comfortable win is on the cards.
