Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-1 Schalke: Fohlen Win First Home Match Of The Year

Well into the second half of the season, Gladbach finally won their first home match.

Bundesliga relegation battlers Borussia Moenchengladbach earned their first home win of the season on Sunday, handing a 2-1 defeat to Champions League hopefuls Schalke.

Within two minutes, Peer Kluge capitalised on a defensive howler as he won the ball off Dante and dribbled in to net the opener. Ten minutes later, Marco Reus drew Gladbach level as he blasted home a powerful half-volley. The hosts reversed their early deficit in the 23rd minute when Mohammadou Idrissou finished well with a header following Juan Arango's cross.

There were three goals within the opening minutes, but could have been even more. On six minutes, Idrissou had his header tipped onto the crossbar by Manuel Neuer, and moments later, Reus rattled the bar again with a powerful shot. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar also was set up with a good opportunity, but his first touch was too strong and allowed Filip Daems the opportuninty to make a goal-saving challenge.

The game slowed down somewhat in the second half as the hosts played somewhat more cautiously. Gladbach remained dangerous, though, and Idrissou nearly made it 3-1 with his header on 57 minutes. Youngster Patrick Herrmann, who was involved in Reus' opener, also had a good half-volley narrowly miss wide with 12 minutes to play. Schalke rarely looked dangerous, and a wayward overhead kick from Huntelaar was their only shot on goal late in the match.

Following today's loss, Schalke remain 10th in the Bundesliga standings, eight points behind a Europa League spot. Gladbach draw level on points with Stuttgart, but remain last in the Bundesliga on goal difference.
