Bongarts previews the action as two sides with their eye on the Bundesliga title clash, hoping to make ground on Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table

Borussia Monchengladbach have an almost clean bill of health to choose from for the visit of Schalke. Martin Stranzl missed Wednesday's cup clash with Hertha Berlin through flu, but could return at Roel Brouwers' expense.

Meanwhile, despite scoring the clincher against Hertha Berlin in midweek, Oscar Wendt is likely to be forced to make do with a spot on the bench.

After making his comeback during last week's 1-1 draw with Mainz, Jefferson Farfan is back in contention for a place in Huub Stevens' first team. However, Ralf Fahrmann remains out with a ligament injury, while Alexander Baumjohann and Peer Kluge are both sidelined with injuries picked up in training.

Jermaine Jones is still suspended for a vicious foul on Marco Reus when these two sides met in the DFB-Pokal in December.

  • Since their return to the Bundesliga in 2008, Borussia Monchengladbach have won all three of their home league matches against Schalke.
  • In a 1967 clash between these two sides, Gladbach triumphed 11-0, a result that remains the second biggest victory in Bundesliga history.
  • These two sides have already clashed at Borussia Park this season, with the hosts recording a 3-1 victory to knock Huub Stevens' men out of the DFB Pokal.
  • Schalke are unbeaten in their last six Bundesliga fixtures, with last week's draw halting a five-match winning streak.
  • A brace would see Raul (right) become the second Spaniard to reach 25 goals in  the Bundesliga.
  • Schalke have already collected one more point on the road than they managed in the whole of last season.

The young Germany international has a chance to make himself a Borussia Dortmund hero before he even puts on the club's shirt by putting in a match-winning performance against his future employers' arch-rivals. The 22-year-old has led his current side's unlikely charge to the Champions League places, and if Lucien Favre's side are to sustain their form, Reus will be key.

The Dutchman has been every bit as essential to his side's attacks as Reus has been for his side this season, scoring a grand total of 27 goals in all competitions. A goal against Borussia Monchengladbach would make the 28-year-old the fifth foreigner to reach 25 Bundesliga goals, and the 20th Schalke player to reach that figure overall.
I'd expect these two sides to play out a tense draw. Despite having the advantage of playing at home, Lucien Favre's side are likely to be fatigued by their exertions against Hertha Berlin in midweek. Meanwhile, there was something hollow about Schalke's play against Mainz, and Huub Stevens' men are likely to have one eye on midweek's important Europa League clash, and so not go all out to try and claim victory here.
