Both sides head into the Signal Iduna Park clash with a number of injury worries. For the hosts, Mats Hummels was forced to sit out Germany's two recent qualifying matches due to a hip injury, but should be fit to return to action for his club.

However, his fellow defender, Marcel Schmelzer, picked up a knock while on international duty. Should he not recover in time, Chris Low will deputise at left-back. Sven Bender and Sebastian Kehl have both shaken off minor problems, but Ilkay Gundogan is still in doubt with a back problem.

Finally, Jakub Blaszczykowski is still sidelined with a tear of a joint in his left knee, while Patrick Owomoyela is still lacking match fitness.

Meanwhile, Schalke boss Huub Stevens must decide between fielding Timo Hildebrand and Lars Unnerstall in goal, with the former Valencia keeper having recovered from the injury that has kept him out for much of the season.

Meanwhile, the Gelsenkirchen club will be without the services of Kyriakos Papadopoulos in the heart of defence, allowing Benedikt Howedes to play at centre-back alongside Joel Matip, with Atsuto Uchida on the right.

Julian Draxler could play some role, despite breaking an arm just over a fortnight ago against Montpellier, while Jefferson Farfan and Tranquillo Barnetta are both doubts after making long-haul journeys back from international duty.

  DID YOU KNOW?
  • Borussia Dortmund did the double over Schalke last season for the first time since 1996-97, with a 2-0 home win taking them to the top of the Bundesliga.
  • Marco Reus (pictured, right) has scored six goals in as many games for club and country.
  • BVB's first Bundesliga triumph under Jurgen Klopp was the club's seventh national title - the same number that their main rivals have won.
  • Schalke currently lead the all-time head-to-head in the Revierderby, having chalked up 55 triumphs compared to Dortmund's 37.
  • What's more, since the year 2000, the Veltins Arena side have had a great record when making the short trip to Dortmund, having won six times in the 12 Westfalenstadion meetings between the two sides, losing just twice.
  • This match comes on the 82-year anniversary of the biggest winning margin in a Revierderby - a 10-0 win for the Konigsblauen in Gelsenkirchen.

Having showcased some of his best form during the international break, and with Schalke missing key defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos through injury, Marco Reus could be in for anther fruitful afternoon on Saturday. The 23-year-old has made an astonishing start to his Borussia Dortmund career, and will be eager to keep up his form and establish himself as one of Europe's best players.

A huge burden will be resting on the shoulders of Benedikt Howedes on Saturday, with the Dortmund front line posing a serious threat to the Schalke defence. Marco Reus and Mario Gotze have both been in fine form of late, andgiven the Konigsblauen's poor record against fellow top-level sides last season, they will need their skipper to be on top of his game if they are to get a result.
Prediction
Borussia Dortmund's form certainly seems to wax and wane with every passing match, but backed by their ever-passionate home crowd, they should raise their game for derby day. Schalke, of course, pose a considerable threat of their own, but with Julian Draxler unlikely to feature from the start, they could have problems breaking down the Dortmund back line. With the likes of Reus and Gotze on top of their game, I'd expect BVB to record a big victory.
