Borussia Dortmund - Freiburg Preview: Jurgen Klopp's men can smash Bundesliga points record with victory

Borussia Dortmund - Freiburg Preview: Jurgen Klopp's men can smash Bundesliga points record with victory

The hosts will look to wrap up their league campaign in style against Christian Streich's men, who have already ensured survival

Piszczek, Subotic, Hummels, Schmelzer
Gundogan, Kehl
Gotze, Kagawa, Perisic

Mujdza, Diagne, Ginter, Sorg
Schmid, Flum, Makiadi, Caligiuri
Guede, Freis

Jurgen Klopp has a nearly full-strength squad of players to choose from for the visit of Freiburg. The only absentees are defenders Patrick Owomoyela, who has a calf problem, and Julian Koch, who is yet to return to fitness after a lengthy lay-off.

Lukasz Piszczek was rested in favour of the former for last weekend's win over Kaiserslautern, and should slot in at right-back, while Mario Gotze should continue his return from injury on the right wing.

Despite scoring a hat-trick last time out, Lucas Barrios is expected to drop to the bench in favour of Robert Lewandowski.

Meanwhile, Freiburg also have a nearly full-strength squad to choose from, with the only projected absence being Julian Schuster, who has a facial injury.

  • If Borussia Dortmund overcome Freiburg, they will set a new league record for number of points achieved in a season.
  • If selected, Lucas Barrios (pictured, right) will be making his final Bundesliga appearance, before moving to China to play for Guangzhou Evergrande.
  • The hosts are in the midst of a 27-match unbeaten run in the Bundesliga.
  • The last time Freiburg won at Signal Iduna Park was in 2001-02, when they managed a 2-0 victory over Dortmund.
  • In 1994-95, the Breisgau-based team's second ever Bundesliga season, they finished a mere three points behind BVB, who were crowned champions.
  • Only Hertha Berlin and Koln have conceded more goals than Freiburg in the league this season.

Mario Gotze is back. BVB made light of his lengthy absence thanks to the good form of Kuba, but having made his first start after his injury last weekend, the rising star will be eager to show his fans and team-mates what they have been missing. Gotze has recently signed a new contract with Dortmund, endearing himself to the club to no end, and will be eager to show Germany coach Joachim Low the full extent of his capabilities ahead of Euro 2012.

C. Makiadi

Position: Midfielder

Amid a poor season for Freiburg, one name has stood out: Cedric Makiadi. The Congolese midfielder has had a fantastic campaign, showcasing his commitment off the ball, and mixing it with a formidable goal-scoring threat. If Freiburg are to pull off a shock result against Dortmund, there's no doubt that Makiadi will be the key figure in the victory, driving his team on from midfield.

Editor's Prediction

Borussia Dortmund may have wrapped up the Bundesliga an age ago, but they still have a lot to play for. They will know that they can seal their place in the history books of German football with victory over Freiburg, who have secured top-flight status for another season, and will be eager for a difficult season to end. Accordingly, I'd expect the host to run out easy victors in a typical end-of-season encounter.
