Could do little to stop the United goals but looked very shaky behind a back four that was all over the place. Decision making was suspect but did make a couple of decent stops, not least to deny Jones.
Stuck to his task commendably but seemed to have no relationship or understanding with the other defenders. Often found himself in two-on-one situations defensively but still allowed crosses into the box too easily.
The England defender made his first start since the transfer window closed and some Bolton fans must have been wishing they had sold him. Caught flat-footed for Hernandez's opener and it got little better as he produced a performance littered with misjudgements.
The Belgian defender dealt well with Young in one-on-one situations but lost concentration too often, most notably as Rooney stole in for the second goal of the afternoon.
Simply couldn't get to grips with United's strikeforce from just about the first kick. Caught ball watching time after time and was punished by the visitors' movement and finishing.
Looked to put his foot on the ball and start passing moves but had little support from his team-mates.
Whipped in some excellent crosses with his left foot but completely abdicated defensive responsibility, giving Jones and Nani complete freedom to attack down Bolton's left and deliver crosses into the box.
The midfielder never stopped trying but he was completely overrun by Anderson in central midfield. Failed to protect the back four or offer anything in an attacking sense.
Early volley cleared off the line and that was about as much as we saw of him. The former United man couldn't get into the game and was replaced by Pratley in the 61st minute.
The Bolton captain seemed too pumped up early on as he launched himself into tackles, one of which rightly resulted in a booking. As usual, provided a target for Bolton to attack but United were able to read the second ball. Replaced by new signing Ngog in the 65th minute.
Tested De Gea with a powerful turn and shot in the first half but got little change out of the United defenders. Replaced by Tuncay 15 minutes from time.
The young Spaniard was selected despite rumours he would be rested and he didn't let his side down. Made clean saves when called upon and untroubled by crosses into the box.
The Frenchman has been guilty in recent games of making errors that have cost United goals. He was back to his best here - solid defensively and energetic in attack as he looked to support Young at every opportunity.
Booed with every touch following his nasty challenge on Stuart Holden last season but produced an accomplished display and dealt well with Kevin Davies.
He has been written off by many but served a reminder of his quality with an excellent display. Superb anticipation and reading of the game proves he still has a big role to play for club and country.
The youngster played out of position at right-back and produced a quite remarkable performance. Brilliant cross to create Rooney's first goal of the game and an even better driving run into the box led to the striker's second.
The engine room in the visitors' midfield, he seemed to pick up almost every loose ball and begin a United attack. An all-action, all-round display that set the tempo - and Bolton couldn't handle it.
Replaced in the fourth minute after picking up an injury in a challenge with Kevin Davies.
The Portuguese flyer was close to his best form and set up the opener with a pinpoint cross for Hernandez to turn home. Played some lovely one and two-touch passes and committed Bolton defenders, not least in the build-up to United's fourth goal.
The winger hugged the touchline and was always dangerous with his pace and delivery. Linked up well with Evra and Rooney but not quite on the same form as in his previous outing against Arsenal.
The Mexican was handed his first start of the season and it took him just four minutes to open his account for the season with a deft finish after a brilliant run across goal. Added his second from close range in the 58th minute and his movement was a constant threat.
Continued his fine start to the season with his second hat-trick in as many games. The first two were poacher's finishes inside the penalty area and the third was a crisp strike from just outside the box. Worked tirelessly and continually picked up the ball after dropping into space.

- 31 D. Wheater
- 6 F. Muamba
Came on for Eagles in the 61st minute but looked uncomfortable in central midfield as the visitors dominated.
- 28 G. Kakuta
Replacement for Klasnic 15 minutes from time, the Turkish attacker looked sharp and was one of the few Bolton players who seemed able to find space.
- 34 A. Lindegaard
- 20 Fábio
Replaced the injured Evans in the 61st minute and was solid in central defence as United kept a clean sheet.
- 13 Ji-Sung Park
Came on for Young in the 61st minute and sprung Bolton's defensive line with astute runs and clever passes.
Early replacement for the injured Cleverley but provided continuity with his efficient use of the ball, starting United attacks.
