Serie A Preview: Bologna - Sampdoria

Serie A Preview: Bologna - Sampdoria

The Genoese side will be searching for a win away from home...

Inching Towards Daylight

A quick look at the Serie A table would suggest that Bologna are doing pretty well as they are 13th in the standings with six points from five matches. Indeed, for a side that are expected to hover near the bottom three, this does look like an optimistic start.

However, such is the competitive spirit of Serie A that the Felsinei are just a point above the relegation zone and have as many points as Sampdoria and Cagliari do. Nevertheless, it shouldn't take anything away from Alberto Malesani's side as they are undefeated in their last three matches. A 2-2 draw with Roma in Rome was followed by a 2-1 home win against Udinese; and last weekend Bologna held Catania to a 1-1 draw in Sicily.

A win against Sampdoria at home is not entirely out of the question given that the Genoa-based side have not looked very sure of themselves on their travels. Moreover, Bologna held mighty Inter to a goalless draw at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara in their opening match of the new Serie A season - that should be a confidence-booster.

Rising Up The Ladder

Sampdoria are one of potentially 10 clubs in the Italian top flight who can realistically attempt for a place in the top four in Serie A but they need to start winning matches with gusto. Last weekend the Blucerchiati exhibited one of their worst performances as they drew 0-0 with Udinese in Genoa.

Samp are currently 12th in the table with six points from five matches. Domenico Di Carlo's side are just three points off a Champions League spot but they will have to be more consistent. Furthermore, they haven't won a league fixture since the opening weekend of the campaign when they defeated Lazio 2-0 at home.

However, Samp recovered some of their lost touch on Thursday evening when they defeated Debrecen 1-0 at the Marassi in a Europa League group game and will now aspire to take that form to Bologna.

Di Vaio will again have to be Bologna’s Messiah if they are to win against Sampdoria. Bologna’s quality is inferior to Samp but Di Vaio is a classy player who has already been among the goals in the Italian top flight this season.

A. Cassano

Position: Attacker

Cassano has gone cold for a while after a sensational start to the season and the Italy international will need to step up his game against Bologna away from home. One or two moments of magic from the former Roma and Real Madrid player could just be enough for the Genoa-based side to garner an away victory.
