Substitutes Pablo Mouche and Lucas Viatri connected on a late goal as Boca picked up a crucial win, giving Julio Cesar Falcioni a little room to breathe
In the second half of Sunday's clash in Buenos Aires, Boca was looking for a little magic. Coach Julio Cesar Falcioni decided to insert Lucas Viatri and Pablo Mouche, hoping to find a late goal to please the club officials and fans all over the nation.
In the 89th minute, Mouche played in a beautiful cross to the centre of the box, finding the head of Viatri as he dove towards goal, redirected the ball into the left side for the dramatic 2-1 victory.
Boca was the better team in the early going, getting down the field to frighten the Estudiantes defence. But, the home side failed to take advantage of their opportunities, sending a header wide and a few shots over the goal. The attack was more creative and dangerous than over the previous fixtures, mostly due to Juan Roman Riquelme being at full strength. As the attack was making progress, Boca's biggest issue stayed constant.
The first opportunity the visitors had, thanks to an error by the Boca defence, they put it away.
Estudiantes struck seven minutes in thanks to Hernan Rodrigo Lopez, who received a high ball in the box over all the defenders, before finishing with a low shot to stun the Bombonera.
The defenders of Los Xeneizes were left standing, watching a ball sky over their heads.
Another mistake by Boca, another goal by the opponent.
Down early, Boca was hoping to respond before the result worsened. The team played through the centre of the midfield, trying to then play wide to send in crosses. But, Martin Palermo could not get a head on them and put them away. As a few chances went by, Boca began to look desperate, hoping to build on last week's win against Colon.
The squad finally did respond thanks to its star.
Riquelme put away one of his signature free kicks with a glorious one 15 minutes in, curving the ball to the inside of the post from a few metres out of the box.
At 1-1, both sides went in search of the second, but neither produced chances to go up until Boca left it late.
Boca did find the back of the net thanks to Viatri earlier in the half, but it was ruled offside.
With the win, Boca have now taken six points from the last two games but will still feel the pressure as they remain towards the bottom of the table. They will travel to face Lanus next weekend in a vital game for the club and the future of Falcioni.
Estudiantes remain in first place in the league and will be home to San Lorenzo.
