Schalke 04

  • Schalke last met Bayern in the DFB-Pokal at the semi-final stage in March 2010.  Arjen Robben's 112th minute strike decided the tie in favour of der Rekordmeister after neither side could manage a goal in normal time.
  • Whilst Bayern have won five of the last six meetings in all competitions in Gelsenkirchen, Schalke's record in Munich is less convincing, although they did manage a 1-0 win there in the Bundesliga in April 2009 courtesy of Halil Altintop's winner.
  • Bayern have won the Pokal a record fifteen times and have been runners-up on a further two occasions. Schalke have won the competition on four occasions and been beaten finalists seven times.
  • Both teams remain in three competitions, the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB-Pokal but with neither in a position to win the former, the cup competitions remain the best hope for silverware.
  • Bayern have never lost two successive home games at the Allianz Arena. To find the last time this happened, one has to go back to the spring of 2001 when Bremen and Schalke managed victories in the Olympiastadion.
  • Felix Magath coached Bayern from July 2004 until January 2007 and in the 2004-05 and 05-06 seasons won consecutive Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal doubles, a unique feat in the history of German football.
  • Magath's opposite number Louis van Gaal won the DFB-Pokal at the first time of asking last season, with Bayern beating Werder Bremen 4-0 in Berlin.
  • The 59-year old Dutchman has won the cup competition in three different countries - lifting the KNVB Beker with Ajax in 1993 and the Copa del Rey with Barcelona in 1998 before last season's win with Bayern.
  • Bayern and Schalke are Germany's two biggest sports clubs in terms of their membership, boasting almost 250,000 subscribers combined.
  • Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will be playing his first match after he marks 20 years with die Knappen today. He joined the club at the age of four.

December 4, 2010: Schalke 04 2-0 Bayern Munich

Die Koenigsblauen showed what they are capable of with a two-goal victory over the champions, built on the foundation of an outstanding performance from Manuel Neuer and the creativity and determination of Spanish duo Jose Manuel Jurado and Raul.
