Thank you for joining us here at Goal.com for this afternoon's LIVE commentary. Be sure to stick around for all the post-match news and analysis, including match report and player ratings. My name is Tom Webber and it has been a pleasure to guide you through this Bundesliga encounter.
The final whistle goes and Bayern complete their third consecutive win in this Bundesliga season despite an impressive second half from Mainz. Goals from Mandzukic and Schweinsteiger got die Roten off to a great start but Szalai halved the deficit from the spot in the second half as the hosts stepped off the gas. But Kroos ensured the three points with a great last-minute strike to keep Bayern on top of the table.
90' + 2'
Assist Javi Martínez
90' + 2'
Goal Toni Kroos
GOOOOOOAAAAALLL!! Kroos finally finds the net as he controls a superb volley Javi Martinez's cross, finding the bottom corner and giving Wetklo no chance.
90' + 2'
HE SHOULD HAVE SCORED!! Pizarro goes through on goal following a pass from Muller but his shot is saved by Wetklo who stays big.
90' + 1'
Into the first minute of an additional two and Zabavnik gets across to make a terrific block, stopping Kroos' effort from troubling Wetklo.
Bayern win a free kick in the Mainz half but refuse to push numbers forward in order to avoid leaving themselves vulnerable at the back. It is played into Mandzukic and he plays it across to Muller but he cannot get a shot away.
Noveski tries to pick out a few passes from the back but with space in midfield limited he sees the ball immediately returned to him. For the third time he looks long but completely misjudges it, sending the ball out for a throw in the Bayern half.
Yellow Card Niko Bungert
The corner count continues to rise for Bayern but as Kroos' delivery is nodded away by a white shirt, the goal tally fails to follow. They could do with one more to put the supporters at rest and secure the three points.
Bayern still not regaining total control over this one but they are still looking like a serious threat on the counterattack. Another one leads to a corner but Wetklo claims the ball with ease.
KROOS!! Muller rolls the ball across the box for the midfielder who runs onto it from deep. However, once again his shot is straight down the middle and although Wetklo spills it initially, no one is following up to make the most of the rebound.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting
Ivanschitz has replaced Choupo-Moting for Mainz. They will look to get him on the ball as much as possible and hope he can find a key pass to create an opportunity by linking up with Szalai.
They manage to keep hold of it and find Muller in the area. He fires an effort towards the keeper's net but it takes a deflection of Bungert's hand and goes behind. The referee either did not see it, or felt the defender could not move his arm out of the way of the powerful effort.
With no pressure on him, Wetklo concedes possession by kicking the ball out of play just 20 yards from his goal. Bayern try to work an opening for Martinez but nothing comes of it.
It looks like Heynckes will be bringing on Javi Martinez in a few moments. They will hope he can help get Bayern back on the ball and using it more effectively.
Into the side-netting again! This time it is Muller who sets the play up with a pass out to Shaqiri on the left. With limited options in the middle he goes for goal and his shot crashes into the side of the goal without testing Wetklo.
He should have scored! Bayern counter with Kroos as he carries the ball from his own half straight at the sparse Mainz defence. Muller is free to the right and he slips a pass to him but the 23-year-old slices his shot into the side-netting.
Soto swings the ball in from the resultant free kick but once more his delivery is poor and goes straight to Neuer. Mainz have not done enough to make the most of their set plays today.
Baumgartlinger is proving a real handful this half as he bursts forward to latch onto a long ball from the back. He is chased by Shaqiri and the Swiss needlessly brings him down with a rash challenge.
OFF THE POST!! The lively Shaqiri pops up on the left and drills the ball into the area. Kroos makes a poor connection with his head but diverts it into the path of Mandzukic at the back post. Yards from goal, the Croatian can only bundle the ball onto the post before hooking an effort over at the second attempt.
Bayern are threatening a bit more since seeing their lead halved. Kroos whips in a free kick from the right but it is too high for Dante to get his permed head on it. They are paying the price for stepping off the gas too early here.
Lahm charges forward for the first time this half and squeezes a cutback in from the byeline. It pings around at the near post but no red shirt manages to get a foot on it and test Wetklo before it is cleared away.
Mainz have another chance with Soto standing over a free kick in the centre of the Bayern half. He tries to find the net but fails to lift it over the body in the box and after a few ricochets, the hosts get it away.
Yellow Card Luiz Gustavo
Penalty Goal Adam Szalai
GOOOOAAAALLL!! Szalai is the man who takes on the responsibility of the spot kick and he puts it away brilliantly, sending Neuer the wrong way and placing it right into the far corner. This will certainly liven things up!
Penalty to Mainz!! Dante brings down Baumgartlinger in the area.
Kroos is given too much space 25 yards from goal and he fires an effort at Wetklo's goal. He keeps it low but it flies straight at the keeper who gets on top of it and smothers the ball.
Quick thinking by Mandzukic as he takes a throw in quickly, spotting the diagonal run of Muller. He is only able to reach the ball when it is practically level with the goal and his shot-cum-cross is blocked by Wetklo at his near post.
Mainz respond well by getting forward with Szalai. He makes space 18 yards from goal but once more the shot is blocked by a red shirt. Neuer has had an extremely comfortable afternoon thus far, even if it has not been quite as easy for his centre-backs.
JUST OVER!! Bayern have another free kick in a similar area, but a bit tighter to the byeline. Shaqiri swings it in with his left foot and Boateng beats Wetklo to the ball but from inside the six-yard box sends his header over the bar.
Unorthodox save by Wetklo. Bayern win a free kick on the right-hand corner of the box. Shaqiri takes it and looks to bend it in tight to the near post. The keeper gets across but merely flaps at it with both hands, somehow managing to turn it behind for a corner.
Tuchel has clearly had some positive words for his players at half time as they have started as the better side. A long ball from deep finds Szalai free of his marker on the edge of the box but as he turns to bring it down he cannot keep it under control.
Good early chance for Mainz as they attack down the right and get the ball in the middle. It is fairly congested but Soto manages to get a shot away, but it is deflected behind for a corner which they then fail to test Neuer from.
We are under way for the final 45 minutes at the Allianz Arena.
Meanwhile, @Shahryar_R has praised Schweinsteiger for his first half performance and is excited by the prospect of Javi Martinez joining him in the middle. We may get to see that this half, but Luiz Gustavo has been in top form so far.
Welcome back! The second half is just a few moments away and @TheAtomicGlow is expecting Bayern to bang in a few more goals in a similar manner to that which they did against Stuttgart in the last round. They will need to up their game again but it is certainly in the offing.
Join me in 15 minutes for the second half and in the meantime, feel free to send any comments or predictions to me on Twitter, @thwebber. I'll get the best ones up before the second half.
At half time Bayern Munich lead Mainz 2-0 thanks to two goals in 13 minutes, courtesy of Mandzukic and Schweinsteiger. Since then though the visitors have worked their way back into the game and the early dominance of the Roten has slipped.
45' + 1'
The half-time whistle goes.
Soto seems to get caught between hitting a cross and a shot and ends up curling the ball high towards the far corner where Neuer can claim the ball unchallenged. That was a waste for Mainz.
A free kick for the visitors in a dangerous area, wide on the right, as Shaqiri pulls Pospech to the ground. Looks like Soto will take it. What can they make of it?
The Oh-Fives up the pressure in the final third but it is all very scrappy. The fail to test Neuer despite a couple of good openings as the Bayern defenders do well to close down quickly.
Despite the goals, Heynckes' cannot be happy at the amount Bayern's performance has slipped throughout the half. They are nowhere near as imperious as they were early on.
Yellow Card Jan Kirchhoff
Mainz keep possession for a decent spell, even though it is in their own half, among the defenders. They gradually move it forward but end up running into trouble. Bayern counter and almost create a chance but Muller is called offside from Lahm's through-ball.
Tuchel rolling the dice with a double substitution as he replaces Caligiuri and Risse, the latter somewhat surprisingly, with Soto and Szalai. The coach clearly going for a bit more of a physical presence up front in the Hungarian.
Shaqiri drifts into the middle again and feeds Mandzukic with his back to goal. The striker tries to hold the play before laying the ball back but is dispossessed by a combination of the Mainz centre-backs.
Bayern are just knocking the ball across the pitch in the deep areas as they look to create space for an opening to exploit. They do not need to rush at the moment due to their two-goal cushion, but Tuchel looks to be readying some substitutes.
Mainz are starting to play much more of a role in this match now. The early goals have enabled Bayern to take it easier but they cannot relax too much or they risk letting the visitors back into this one.
Risse again in the action as he darts down the middle of the two centre backs but goes down as he tries to cut across Dante. The Brazilian holds in hands in the air to profess his innocence and the referee agrees, awarding nothing to the player who looks to have simply slipped.
Risse attempts an ambitious shot on goal from a free kick in excess of 30 yards but he hits it straight into the wall. Bayern look to break immediately and Nicolai Muller brings down his namesake on the opposing side to avoid any more damage.
Nicolai Muller breaks for Mainz down the left and manages to outpace Luiz Gustavo. He gets his head up and sends a decent cross into the middle but it is too far ahead of Choupo-Moting who fails to get on the end of it.
Shaqiri plays a give-and-go with Badstuber and looks to cut inside from the left. He is brought down by Kirchoff wins a free kick. The ball is flighted into the middle but Wetklo does well to come and claim in a swarm of bodies.
Bayern have now scored at least two goals in 11 of their last 12 home league fixtures. Heynckes has got to be pleased with that record, but his side seem to have eased off a little bit.
It could not have gone much worse for Mainz at the midway point of the first half. Bayern have been indomitable and it looks set to be a case of how many goals they can score. Provided they keep up their high-intensity football, we could be set for a few more goals this afternoon.
A super sliding challenge from Luiz Gustavo wins possession for Bayern just outside their opponent's area. Kroos picks it up and lays it off for Muller but his powerful, drilled strike is blocked by a white shirt in the penalty area.
A rare attack for Mainz as they manage to move the ball about in the final third but fail to get a shot away. Bayern win it back and Shaqiri attempts to thread a pass up to Mandzukic but the Croatian is adjudged to have been offside. The visitors cannot over-commit or they will be punished.
Thomas Tuchel's men are unable to get on the ball at the moment. When they do, they are closed down rapidly and end up handing back possession. It is this kind of intensity that has made Bayern look so formidable in the early stages this season.
Muller tries to immediately at another to the pair of early goals as he bring the ball down on the edge of the box after a swift break. He looks to pick out the top corner but fails to find it, instead hitting the ball into the crowd behind the goal.
Assist Holger Badstuber
Goal Bastian Schweinsteiger
GOOOOOAAAALLL!! Schweinsteiger scores it! Once more it is the cross from the wide area that causes Mainz trouble, but this time it comes from the left courtesy of Badstuber. Schweinsteiger makes a late run into the box and glances a header in at the far corner with Wetklo rooted to the spot.
The hosts have sensed a weakness in the wide areas for Mainz and are channeling the ball out their continually. Muller once again gets on it and darts inside of Zabavnik all too easily but his square pass into the area is cut out by the defence.
Another chance for Bayern as Muller ghosts in at the back post to win a header but with the ball bouncing up as he connects, he fails to keep his effort down and sends it over the goal.
Bayern are pressing Mainz high up the pitch and almost win the ball back 30 yards from goal. The defenders are forced to clear it but fortunately for them the pressure is eased as Dante commits a foul.
Muller is certainly not lacking in effectiveness despite being shifted out to the right so far this season. He is already proving very dangerous when on the ball and his team-mates are rightly eager to seek him out once more. He puts a good ball into the area but Mandzukic is beaten to the header.
A lightening start from the hosts and they now look set to maintain their immense scoring record at this early stage in the season. Mainz cannot let that goal affect their game plan or they could well be in for a long, long afternoon.
Assist Thomas Müller
Goal Mario Mandzukic
GOOOOAAAALLL!! What a start!! Muller picks up a loose ball after a poor clearance by Zabavnik and he lays it straight across the goal mouth. Mandzukic is standing at the back post and cannot miss a simple tap in to give Bayern the lead.
Choupo-Moting manages to hold off both Dante and Boateng, squeezing between the two before laying the ball back to Risse. The wide-man tries to win a corner but kicks the ball straight out of play for a goal kick.
We are underway at the Allianz Arena with Bayern shooting from right to left in their traditional all-red kit.
The teams are out on the pitch and kick off is just a few moments away.
Bayern have scored nine goals, with only one in reply, in their opening two Bundesliga games this season, a feat which they managed 25 years ago, but they only recorded a second-placed finish at the end of that season.
In the absence of Robben, Thomas Muller is moved out onto the right flank with Toni Kroos taking the role in the whole. Muller is currently the Bundesliga's highest scoring player with three goals from the opening two fixtures.
That point came after the 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in April and all but ended the championship hopes of Heynckes' men. Mainz have fared no better since then either and, in fact, have not triumphed in any of their five following league matches.
Bayern have been one of the most dominant teams in the Bundesliga so far this season, averaging 66 per cent possession as well as boasting a 90.4% pass success ratio. However, the last league match they failed to win came in this fixture last season as Mainz held them to a goalless draw at the Allianz Arena.
Mainz (4-3-3): Wetklo; Pospech, Bungert, Noveski, Zabavnik; Kirchoff, Baumgartlinger, Caligiuri; Risse, Choupo-Moting, N. Muller. Subs: Karius, Svensson, Diaz, Soto, Ivanschitz, Rukavytsya, Szalai.
Bayern (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Badstuber; Luiz Gustavo, Schweinsteiger; Muller, Kroos, Shaqiri; Mandzukic. Subs: Starke, Van Buyten, Martinez, Tymoshchuk, Can, Weiser, Pizarro.
The big news today is that Bayern will be unable to call upon first-choice wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. The former picked up a thigh injury whilst on international duty with Netherlands in midweek while the latter took a knock in training. Although Mario Gomez is out too, the Roten still start with a hugely dangerous attacking quartet. Full team news on the way.
