Bayern fans can at least take solace in the fact that the last time Dortmund won back to back titles, Germany won Euro 96! Thank you so much for joining us here at Goal.com but be sure to stick around for all the post-match news and analysis. My name is Tom Webber and it has been a pleasure to guide you through the action. Have a great evening.
Whistles ring around the Allianz Arena as Mainz hold Bayern to a 0-0 draw. Heynckes made a number of changes in order to keep his key players fresh for the Champions League on Tuesday but it has backfired as his team now sit eight points behind Borussia Dortmund with three games remaining. If BVB win their next match they will be crowned champions again.
90' + 2'
It is headed away and the full-time whistle goes.
90' + 2'
Corner for Mainz. A shot from Caligiuri is deflected behind. Polanski will whip it in. Can they get a shock winner?
Just two minutes of additional time to be played.
WHAT A SAVE!!! A great move by Bayern. Far more fluid football. Robben dummies the ball and Gomez holds it before playing it back to Kroos 25 yards from goal. He hammers a shot that seems destined for the top corner but Heinz Muller dives across his goal and keeps it out. Superb save from the keeper.
GREAT EFFORT FROM ROBBEN!! A long ball from the back by Badstuber finds the Dutchman on the edge of the box. He is offered enough space to chest the ball down and shoot. His volley is superb and looks to be heading straight for the bottom corner but ends up the wrong side of the post.
Tymoshchuk puts in a great cross, finding the space between defence and the goalkeeper but there is no red shirt looking to get on the end of it. The hosts look crestfallen and seem to have given up already.
Either side could win this. It has been a disappointing game on the whole but it is becoming stretched now with both teams hoping for a winner.
Bayern have lacked invention today, which is odd considering the array of talent they have had on display. Thanks to @tikadeutschland for your comment: "Bayern should not play Robben for the Real Madrid clash, he is not at his best at all, right wing Muller and Kroos in the hole." An opinion shared by many as Kroos is often wasted in a deeper position. Will he make a difference in the closing stages here?
Robben is guilty of trying to do much as he attempts to carry the ball through the heart of the Mainz defence. He is dispossessed by Kirchhoff who has been solid all afternoon for the visitors.
A great chance from Mainz there as a ball in from the right is blazed over the bar. However the referee's assistant has raised his flag as Choupo-Moting was offside when the delivery was sent in.
Caligiuri pulls of a great turn in the box and sends a cross in from the left. Neuer reads it though and catches the ball with ease and tries to launch a counterattack by releasing it quickly.
Gomez manages to keep a loose ball in play on the right by the byeline. He tries to flash it across the face of the goal but Heinz Muller gets down and holds the cross.
Muller does well to break forward down the right and the German cuts the ball back for Robben. The Dutchman has been involved in fits and starts today and completely misses the ball when it comes to him in the box.
Just under 20 minutes remaining at the Allianz Arena and chances have really been at a premium today. Either side could win this but Bayern could well steal a goal should Mainz commit too many men forward.
Robben is the man over on the right and Rafinha plays the ball to him. He looks up but sees no options and his cross is deflected behind for a corner which comes to nothing.
Mainz are hanging on here but they do seem comfortable with the goalless score. Choupo-Moting sees Nicolai Muller in space on the right but his first touch is awful and as he commits to gather it he concedes a foul.
Well, Gomez has certainly added something new to Bayern in attack. Rafinha puts another expert cross into the box and the striker leaps to reach the ball but it is too far away and he fails to make contact. He claims he was pulled but the replays suggest his appeals have no basis.
WHAT A MISS!! Robben nods the ball on to release Gomez but the ball won't drop for the striker on the edge of the box. He also has Zabavnik coming across to close him down so he ends up sending his shot well over the bar.
Yellow CardNicolai Müller
Already Bayern try to find Gomez with a long ball over the top but Heinz Muller rushes out and claims the ball on the edge of his box.
Heynckes' rotations have not worked today and at least he is not afraid to admit that. Gomez now enters the fray. He has fond memories of Mainz as it is the team he scored his first Bundesliga goal against.
Rafinha is getting a lot of joy down the right and he plays a cross parallel with the top of the box. For some reason Robben tries to stab the ball on goal with his first touch and it ends up rolling tamely wide of the goal.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting
Yet another superb long ball by Bayern as Rafinha searches out Olic from the right. However, the striker gets his body shape a bit wrong as he tries to head the ball on target from a rather deep position, nodding it well over.
An absolutely exquisite ball from Thomas Muller almost finds Ribery bursting forward down the left. Their is just too much on the pass though and the Frenchman cannot gather it as it runs out of play for a Mainz throw.
Great clearance by Soto! Robben's corner is flicked on at the near post by Thomas Muller. Schweinsteiger arrives late around the back but the Mainz midfielder gets a vital touch get the ball away from within the six-yard box.
TYMOSHCHUK GOES CLOSE!!! Robben rolls the ball across the top of the box and the Ukrainian fires a shot on goal with his first touch. From a left-of-centre position he just drags the ball a little and it darts wide of the post. He has looked dangerous coming from deep.
Szalai is having a decent game in attack on his own and looks to have have beaten Boateng in a 50-50 but is adjudged to be offside. It was certainly very close and the Hungarian is extremely displeased.
Mainz are now trying to pen Bayern back in their own half as the hosts have a throw deep in their own half. Boateng is called over to take it and his long throw launches a counterattack. It ends with Ribery almost going through on goal but the ball gets away from him and is cleared.
The final pass lets Bayern down there as Olic was almost through but Schweinsteiger's pass was narrowly over-hit. Ribery managed to get on the end of it but failed to get the ball into the box.
The second half is underway! Ribery has replaced Alaba for the hosts at the break.
Welcome back! It looks like Ribery is set to come on for the second half as Bayern attempt to take charge in this match. The second half is just a few moments away. Stay tuned!
An interesting first half in Munich as Jupp Heynckes' side have struggled to break down a very efficient Mainz side. Thomas Tuchel will be pleased with his side's display and they may well fancy their chances of taking all three points here this afternoon. That would, of course, be devastating to Bayern's slim title hopes. Join me in 15 minutes for the second and in the meantime, send your predictions and comments to me on Twitter @thwebber.
45' + 1'
The half-time whistle goes at the Allianz Arena with the score still 0-0.
HE SHOULD HAVE FINISHED THAT!! Thomas Muller spots Olic in space charging through the middle and passes the ball across to him. The Croatian finds himself one-on-one with Heinz Muller and he looks to loft the ball over the onrushing keeper. However, the ball comes off his shin and goes straight at the Mainz stopper who gathers the ball. What a miss.
OFF THE POST!! A cross from the left is rolled back by Muller towards Tymoshchuk who is roughly 30 yards from the goal. He catches the ball sweetly, drilling a controlled effort at the bottom-left corner but it rattles the frame of the goal. So close for the hosts!
Bayern have yet to really test Heinz Muller in the visiting goal. They have had a lot of the ball but their final ball has been lacking. There is a cacophony of whistles in the stadium as the hosts continue to play the ball across the back four. Mainz are still in with a great chance in this game.
A great injection of pace from Contento as he combines well with Alaba down the left. He holds off the challenge as he enters the box but is falling as he attempts to put in the cross and he lofts it far too deep.
Great move by Mainz! Caligiuri comes in from the left and passes the ball to Szalai. He skips past two players and enters the left corner of the box and attempts to test Neuer. His effort has too much height though and flies behind the goal without testing the keeper.
The Mainz defence is caught flat-footed as a quick throw plays Muller in at the byeline. He tries to pull it back for Olic but Kirchhoff gets between and diverts the ball of the field. From the resulting corner the ball knocks about a bit before Rafinha drills a shot that looks set for the bottom corner but ends up shading the outside of the far post.
A corner from Ivanschitz loops up off a Bayern head and falls to Baumgartlinger at the back post. He waits for it to drop and fires a volley at goal but he is swarmed upon by red shirts who stop the ball from hitting the target.
Mainz are enjoying another good spell in the Bayern half. Pospech passes to Baumgartlinger on the right corner of the box. The midfielder tries to clip a ball to the back post but sends it straight at a Bayern defender who nods it away easily.
Bayern are gifted an opportunity to attack as Baumgartlinger gives the ball straight to Olic in his own half. However, fortunately for the Mainz midfielder the Croatian fails to capitalise and ends up giving possession straight back!
So, after an early spell of dominance from the hosts, Mainz are working their way back into this one. The defence are staying well-organised and compact while the forwards look to break quickly.
It is taken by Ivanschitz but his left-footed effort has minimal elevation and slams straight into the wall.
Yellow CardHolger Badstuber
Szalai looks to spin Badstuber and latch onto a through-ball over the top. The defender fails to read his movement and pulls him to ground, earning himself a yellow card and giving Mainz a free kick in a dangerous area.
Rafinha is becoming more adventurous down the right now and he breaks forward and tries to pick out Olic in the box. The Croatian is beaten to the ball and it is sent behind for a corner.
Bayern are looking to build an attack from the left but a stray ball manages to work his way onto the field and so play is stopped. Robben was not pleased by that!
Alaba gives the ball away on the left as he takes far too long to release it. Mainz try to break but Badstuber reads the play and is there to knock the ball straight back to his midfield.
Ivanschitz bends in a free kick from deep on the right. He looks for the head of Szalai but it is a red shirt that nods the ball out of the danger area.
Mainz manage to keep hold of the ball and win a corner but the delivery is poor and fails to beat the first man. They need to make the most of these chances as from Bayern's start, it seems that they will be fairly limited for now.
A moment respite for the Mainz defence as Szalai sends Muller down to the corner flag. He is followed by Tymoshchuk and with a lack of options, the Ukrainian makes a good challenge but concedes a throw in his team's final third.
Robben plays in Olic down the right and the Dutchman then charges into the box. Olic takes a touch and looks up but cannot pick out a pass and is eventually closed down. He needed to be a bit more decisive there.
Bayern are really playing well here, just the start Heynckes would have wanted. Another ball into the box from Robben is hit low to the near post but Zabavnik manages to clear it away. The Bavarians are in total control at the moment and Mainz will need to disrupt their rhythm soon.
Claims for a penalty from Bayern! Robben surges in from the right but just as he is about to pull the trigger Nicolai Muller muscles his way in to poke the ball away. It goes out for a corner which is flashed across the face of the goal but no one is there to tap it in.
Great effort from Ivanschitz!! From about 25 yards he searches out the top corner with the outside of his boot. The ball is swerving but he cannot bring it back on target and Neuer sees it fly wide of his goal.
Contento again looks to play a long pass up the left, this time keeping it on the deck. Olic dummies the ball but there is too much pace on the ball and it rolls all the way through to Muller.
Mainz are pressing high up the pitch but a long ball by Contento is deflected toward the corner flag. Robben steams over and shepherds the ball out of play. The corner comes in but Bayern are lacking a physical presence to get on the end of it.
After a relatively aggressive start from Mainz, Bayern have settled and are knocking the ball along the defence. No doubt they will hope that remaining patient in possession will quickly tire the visitors. Though I am sure the crowd will not allow them to keep the ball in their own half all afternoon!
And we are underway at the Allianz Arena!
Schweinsteiger captains Bayern today as Lahm starts from the bench. Ribery, Gomez and Kroos are also among the substitutes as Heynckes rests some key names ahead of Real Madrid on Tuesday.
The teams are now making their way out onto the pitch. As always you can send me your thoughts and predictions on today's game via Twitter to @thwebber. Kick off is just a few minutes away. How will Bayern respond to that huge blow against Dortmund in midweek? Let's find out!
One of those wins includes the reverse of the fixture back in November when Thomas Tuchel's side won 3-2 with goals from Ivanschitz, Caligiuri and Bungert cancelling out a Daniel van Buyten brace. Tuchel also masterminded their last win at the Allianz Arena. Goals from Sami Allagui and Adam Szalai either side of a Bo Svensson own goal earned the Oh-Fives the win. It was the only time they have taken three points away to the Bavarians.
The history between these two sides in recent years sets this game up to be a real cracker. Bayern are currently enjoying a decent spell in front of their own fans with eight wins from their previous eight fixtures, scoring at least two goals in each game. Mainz, however, have failed to win in 13 of their last 14 Bundesliga away games, but have won three of their last five matches against Bayern.
Mainz are somewhat of a bogey team for Bayern and may well fancy their chances this afternoon following the Bavarians' 1-0 defeat to league leaders Borussia Dortmund in the week. BVB also defeated Schalke 2-1 earlier today and now hold a nine-point advantage over Heynckes' side. The visitors meanwhile need to take at least a point this afternoon to avoid dropping into 11th place after Nurnberg's win over Kaiserslauten.
Mainz (4-2-3-1): H. Muller; Pospech, Kirchhoff, Noveski, Zabavnik; Soto, Baumgartlinger; N. Muller, Ivanschitz, Caligiuri; Szalai. Subs: Wetklo, Fathi, Bungert, Polanski, Zidan, Chuopo-Moting, Allagui.
Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Rafinha, Boateng, Badstuber, Contento; Tymoshchuk, Schweinsteiger; Robben, Muller, Alaba; Olic. Subs: Butt, Lahm, Pranjic, Luiz Gustavo, Ribery, Kroos, Gomez.
The team news for today's clash is out and Bayern have made a number of changes ahead of their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid on Tuesday.
First of all, my condolences go out to the friends and family of 25-year-old Piermario Morosini who tragically died today after collapsing during Livorno's match against Serie B opponents Pescara. As a result, all Serie A matches this weekend have been promptly postponed. I'm sure everyone at Goal.com would join me in lending our support during this difficult time.
Good afternoon and welcome to Goal.com's LIVE text commentary on today's Bundesliga clash between Bayern Munich and Mainz. Nothing less than a win will do for Jupp Heynckes' men today but the Bavarians have struggled to get the better of these particular opponents in recent years. My name is Tom Webber and I will be guiding you through the action.
