Bayern Munich-Freiburg Preview: Red-hot Bavarians chase goals record

Bayern Munich-Freiburg Preview: Red-hot Bavarians chase goals record

Bongarts

Jupp Heynckes' side are just 12 goals away from equalling the Bundesliga's highest-ever goals tally and the visitors have a poor record against Saturday's hosts

Following their midweek Champions League exertions, Bayern Munich will shuffle the pack, with the Bundesliga already wrapped up. Rafinha, Daniel Van Buyten, Diego Contento, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, Xherdan Shaqiri and Luiz Gustavo will come into the XI, with Claudio Pizarro slotting in behind the fit-again Mario Mandzukic.

Thomas Muller is unlikely to be risked after picking up a slight knock against Barcelona, while Holger Badstuber remains sidelined with knee ligament damage. Toni Kroos reportedly underwent knee surgery last week, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

As they chase a top-four finish, meanwhile, Freiburg will name as strong a team as possible. They will be without the services of many key players, though.

Julian Schuster has picked up one yellow card too many and will be suspended, Marco Terrazzino has a knee problem, while Jan Rosenthal (thigh) and Pavel Krmas are also likely to miss out.

  DID YOU KNOW?
  • Bayern Munich are just 12 goals away from equalling the Bundesliga record tally of 101, which they themselves set back in 1972.
  • Claudio Pizarro (pictured, right) has been scoredor assisted a Bundesliga goal once every 44 minutes this season.
  • Bayern have drawn just one of their last 14 home games against Freiburg.
  • Freiburg have never won when facing the Bundesliga leaders, drawing three times and losing 11.
  • Furthermore, they have not scored against the Bavarians since Papiss Cisse netted a penalty in March 2011.
  • The Mage Solar Stadion outfit suffered their heaviest ever league defeat to Bayern (7-0) in the corresponding fixture last season.

The Peruvian's return to the Allianz Arena may have raised a few eyebrows last summer but he has been proving his worth to the Bavarians of late, scoring and assisting a string of goals. He was in fine form last week and could be the man to spark another win.

The teenage defender made strides towards becoming one of the Bundesliga's better young players this season, leading to links with Borussia Dortmund. He will have his work cut out in stopping Bayern's rampant attack but can take another step towards proving himself.

Editor's Prediction

Freiburg have enjoyed a great season but Bayern Munich are a cut above the rest in Germany, as they have so emphatically proved this season, and in Europe, as their 4-0 trouncing of Barcelona showed in midweek. They will rest key men but have enough to see off SCF with their usual ease.
