Beaten a couple of times but a combination of dodgy refereeing decisions and the woodwork preserved his cleansheet.
Kept Smolov very quiet throughout and chances down the right came at a premium for the visitors as the full-back held his position well.
Strong at centre-half and made sure there was never any real problems caused by crosses. Occasionally lost his man though, causing panic in the AZ defence.
Caused the problems for Anzhi that lead to the penalty, out-jumping Gadzhibekov before the handball. Was lucky at the other end though not to put through his own net with a couple of wild clearances.
Had to come off at the break as Aliyev constantly go the better of him. Whether it was down to injury or not, it didn't show the full-back in a good light.
Didn't pose much of a threat out wide and often found himself drifting inside in search of the action. Never looked threatening even when he did stumble across the action, fluffing his lines on a couple of occasions.
AZ struggled to get a foothold in the midfield and he was often at fault for this, failing to provide a reliable link between the midfield and Johannsson.
One of Az's better performers in the middle. Worked hard to get from box-to-box and support the attack.
Wasn't able to assert himself on the game as Anzhi controlled the bulk of possession. Went in for a few crunching tackles though and never backed down.
Perhaps Az's biggest threat of the evening. Was lucky to see his penalty squeeze past Kerzhakov but constantly kept the Anzhi keeper on his toes with a string of efforts.
One of the more lively players wearing red in the opening stages. Clearly pin-pointed as a threat by Anzhi though and was targeted by a couple of meaty tackles.
Unlucky to see Johannsson's penalty spin of his palm and into the net.
Provided a solid platform in the midfield which allowed Anzhi to retain the ball well and launch a number of testing counter-attacks.
Was happy to get beyond the midfield and produce an extra body in attack, but often his final ball went to waste.
Was never really given much food for thought at full-back but picked up a needless booking in the second period.
Composed at centre-back and produced a string of important clearances when called upon.
What he was thinking was anybody's guess as he raised his hands in his own penalty area to give away the spot kick.
Sat deep alongside Epureanu and didn't allow any AZ attacks to pass through the centre, forcing the home side out wide.
Will miss the second leg after picking up a needless booking, not that Anzhi will miss him after a fairly sterile display.
Easily the best player out on the pitch. Caused the AZ defence constant problems with his direct running style.
Looked to have given his side the lead but officials decided his header hadn't crossed the line.
Linked well with Bukharov early on but faded quickly and was outshone but his team-mate on the opposite flank.
