Live Commentary

  • In tonight's other match in the group, Zenit St. Petersburg have sprung a surprise in beating ten-man Porto 1-0. That means a win in the return fixture for Atletico could be enough to see them through, while Austria Vienna face an uphill battle to qualify after being outplayed for the majority of this match. I've been Tom Maston and thank you for joining me.
  • The referee's whistle blows for the final time and Atletico have maintained their 100 percent record in Group G. They have one foot in the last 16 after Diego Costa's brace added to Raul Garcia's opener.
  • 90' + 1'
The set-piece is too heavy for everyone and the home side can clear.
  • 90'
We have entered two minutes of stoppage time as Atletico win a corner.
  • 89'
Almost the perfect finish for the visitors as Mader gives the ball away in midfield. Rodriguez breaks forward before playing an inch-perfect pass for Koke, but he can only shoot straight at Lindner with just the goalkeeper to beat.
  • 87'
Half-hearted claims for a penalty as Hosiner goes down after backing into Miranda. No real complaints from the players as the referee waves away the calls for a spot-kick.
  • 85'
    SubstitutionDaniel Royer Marin Leovac
Royer has been the home side's best player in the second half, and he again shows good skill before taking aim from 40 yards. His effort is too high, and it is also his last action as Leovac replaces him from the bench.
  • 83'
Atletico are looking to finish this one with a bang as their forward players cue up to fire on goal. Eventually it is Rodriguez who gets a shot away but it is too high.
  • 81'
    SubstitutionRaúl García Adrián
Final change for the visitors as Raul Garcia is replaced by Adrian.
  • 80'
GREAT SAVE! Lindner saves Suttner some embarrassment as the defender heads towards his own goal in an attempt to cut out Garcia's cross. The goalkeeper sticks out his left hand and saves well though.
  • 79'
Atletico come to life in the attacking third as Koke feeds Juanfran down the right. The full-back's cross is a good one but Rodriguez cannot get any power behind his header. At the other end Spiridonovic shows some pace to get to the byline but his low cross is smothered by Courtois.
  • 77'
Both teams are starting to go through the motions with the final result pretty much wrapped up. The supporters have also been subdued as this one peters out somewhat.
  • 75'
    SubstitutionTomáš- Jun Srdan Spiridonovic
Second change for the hosts as the disappointing Jun is replaced by Spiridonovic.
  • 73'
Kienast gets away with a handball that, had it been spotted, could have seen him receive a second yellow card. Fortunate for the substitute striker.
  • 71'
Austria Vienna have certainly applied themselves much better since going 2-0 down, but they lack quality going forward. Atletico looking fairly comfortable.
  • 69'
Royer is finally coming into the game as he shows good skill against Juanfran, but he cannot find a killer ball and eventually Atletico can clear.
  • 67'
    Yellow Card Juanfran
The home side certainly aren't going to roll over for the final 23 minutes. Royer swings in a free-kick from the right that just evades Rogulj before falling just wide of the post. Juanfran then picks up a yellow card for a foul on Royer.
  • 66'
Almost a glorious fourth as Tiago chips a delightful ball over the top of the defence. Koke is the man waiting in the box but his legs aren't quite long enough to finish the move.
  • 64'
Kienast has been a threat since coming on, and he again fires in on goal after turning Miranda on the edge of the box. His effort is a weak one though and Courtois holds on with ease.
  • 62'
Austria Vienna are still looking to come forward, but a clean sheet will certainly complete this performance from the visitors. Their defence has been strong thus far.
  • 60'
    SubstitutionDiego Costa Cristian Rodríguez
No hat-trick for Diego Costa as he makes his way off to be replaced by Cristian Rodriguez.
  • 59'
Diego Costa and Juanfran combine well down the right, with the Brazilian showing some fantastic skill to beat his marker down near the byeline. However, his touch is too heavy and he is unable to catch up to it and move inside the area.
  • 57'
    Yellow Card Gabi
Austria Vienna win a free kick just outside the near-side corner of the box and Jun stands over it. His delivery is poor, though, striking the wall and although his team-mate manages to keep the ball in play they fail to create anything more from it.
  • 55'
Austria Vienna still looking to get forward as Kienast tests Courtois. The loanee goalkeeper gets down well to stop one-handed, though the shot may have been off-target anyway.
  • 53'
    Assist Emiliano Insúa
  • 53'
    Goal Diego Costa
GOAL!!! And now the points have been all but wrapped up. Raul Garcia sets Insua free down the left, and his pull back finds Diego Costa. The striker shows excellent touch to kill the ball before slotting past Lindner.
  • 52'
It is almost as if the roles have been reversed since the start of the match, with Atletico now misplacing passes. Fortunately for them Austria Vienna don't quite have the attacking potency.
  • 50'
That is until now as Mader tries his luck from distance. His effort is swerving and has Courtois worried before it flies just over the top. Better from the hosts.
  • 49'
The home side have started the second half as they finished the first, and are at last stringing some passes together. Yet to threaten Courtois though.
  • 47'
    Yellow Card Markus Suttner
  • 47'
Suttner gets forward down the left for the hosts, but after his excellent cross is cleared, he picks up a yellow card for fouling Turan as the visitors looked to break.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionFilipe Luis Emiliano Insúa
Atletico have made a change at half-time, with Insua replacing the impressive Filipe. Austria Vienna kick-off and we are back underway.
  • The players are making their way back out onto the field. Can the Austrian side find a way back? They'll need an early goal you would think.
  • In truth Simeone's side are good value for their lead, though the home side came back into it during the last ten minutes of the opening period. Hosiner should have pulled one back, but the half-time whistle may have come at the wrong time for them. I'll be back in ten minutes for the second half.
  • The referee's whistle blows and the opening 45 minutes have come to a close. Two goals in the opening 20 minutes have put the Spanish side firmly in control as we head in at the break.
  • 45'
    Yellow Card Raúl García
A first booking of the night for Atletico as Raul Garcia slides in on Mader. There will be two minutes added on at the end of the first half.
  • 43'
Diego Costa is again down, and this time he requires treatment. This stoppage may take some of the steam out of Austria Vienna after a good last five minutes.
  • 41'
The home side's tails are up as first Royer then Suttner deliver balls into the box. The quality isn't there though and Atletico can clear relatively easily.
  • 39'
    Yellow Card Roman Kienast
Kienast appeals for a penalty as he is tugged back on the edge of the box. The referee sees nothing wrong with Miranda's challenge and the substitute is booked for dissent.
  • 37'
OFF THE BAR! Austria Vienna's best move of the match almost brings a goal. Dilaver gets forward down the right before Mader delivers an excellent ball to the back post. Hosiner is in acres of space and smashes a volley goalwards, only to see it crash off the crossbar.
  • 35'
Filipe again at the heart of everything as he trades passes with Koke before rolling into Diego Costa. The striker tries to turn but cannot make proper contact from a tight angle and the ball drifts wide.
  • 33'
Atletico continue to dominate possession as the hosts misplace more passes. They look completely overawed so far.
  • 31'
    Yellow Card James Holland
Filipe and Koke combine again, but the left-back's cross is cut out. The chance hasn't gone though, as Holland picks concedes a free-kick on the edge of the area after a deliberate handball. He is booked for his troubles.
  • 31'
Filipe's effort is blocked by the wall before Juanfran's cross is too heavy for his teammates. A missed chance to put this game to bed by the Spanish outfit.
  • 28'
Austria Vienna look to come forward on the counter attack, but Filipe, who has been excellent at left-back, intercepts well as Kienast looked to get in behind.
  • 27'
Another opportunity for the visitors as Koke brings the ball inside from the left but drags his low effort from distance wide of the post. Costa is moving much more freely now too.
  • 26'
A bit of concern here for Atletico as Diego Costa stays down after a challenge from Rogulj. He eventually makes it to his feet but he is still limping slightly.
  • 24'
Rogulj is almost caught out of position as he comes marauding out from the centre of defence, but he recovers well to win the ball from Diego Costa. Austria Vienna can't afford any more mistakes.
  • 22'
The stuffing hasn't quite been knocked out of the hosts, but it is a long way back for them now. Without a goal in the group stage as yet, they need at least two to get anything tonight.
  • 20'
    Goal Diego Costa
GOAL!!! It's taken Diego Costa 20 minutes to make his mark on the Champions League as he doubles Atletico's lead. The striker picks the ball up in his own half before setting off goalwards. He jinks his way past the defence before expertly slotting into the bottom corner. Too easy.
  • 19'
A first half-chance for the home side as Alderweireld does well to head a cross away from the left under pressure from Kienast.
  • 17'
    Yellow Card Philipp Hosiner
A first booking of the night as Hosiner goes in late on Juanfran and is rightly shown a yellow card by the Italian official.
  • 16'
More wayward passing from the hosts means they again concede possession. They are not helping themselves as they look to find a way back into this one.
  • 14'
    SubstitutionMarko Stankovic Roman Kienast
A very early subsitution for the hosts sees Stankovic replaced by Kienast. He has only just returned from injury, and he may well have felt a twinge in his affected hamstring.
  • 12'
The home crowd are being encouraged to get behind their side as they look to get back into the game. First of all they need the ball, though, and only a poor pass allows them that after another period of possession for the Spanish side.
  • 10'
It already seems that this is going to be a difficult evening for the home side. Atletico are playing the ball around at will with Austria Vienna chasing shadows. The visitors deserve their lead.
  • 8'
    Assist Filipe Luis
  • 8'
    Goal Raúl García
GOAL!!! Austria Vienna pride themselves on their defence, but they are left stationary as Atletico play it around them lime they're not there. Koke's through ball is the key pass as he finds Filipe, and the left-back in turn feeds Raul Garcia who slots into an empty net. Too easy for the visitors.
  • 6'
Simeone's side are certainly controlling things, with the hosts unable to hold onto the ball for any length of time. The pressure is relieved though as Gabi brings down Jun for a free-kick.
  • 4'
A first sight of goal for the visitors and it comes from an unlikely source as Juanfran goes close. The right-back hits a powerful effort from the edge of the box that Lindner tips behind for a corner. Decent save from the goalkeeper.
  • 3'
A quiet start to proceedings, with the home side looking to close down Atletico whenever they gain possession. They are not about to let their good defensive record slip early on.
  • 1'
Atletico kick-off and we are underway...
  • Italian referee Daniele Orsato is the man in charge of proceedings this evening as the players go through their final preparations.
  • The instantly recognisable Champions League anthem blares out the speakers before the players go through their customary handshakes. Not long now till kick-off...
  • The two teams are in the tunnel as we get ever closer to this match getting underway. Both teams look calm while the supporters of both sides are in buoyant mood. There are plenty of replica trophies amongst the home fans as the dream continues here.
  • There are just under ten minutes till kick-off in Austria and also in Portugal, where Porto host Zenit St. Petersburg in tonight's other Group G encounter. Porto currently are currently three points Atletico in second while Zenit are level with Austria Vienna on a single point after their 0-0 draw on matchday two.
  • Despite their underdog status, Austria Vienna will be hopeful of keeping up their excellent defensive record in the competition to date. They have kept four clean sheets in their six matches so far, and though they are yet to score in the group stage, their excellence at the back at least keeps them in matches. Whether they can keep out Diego Costa and co. though is another matter.
  • The main team news for Atletico is that Diego Costa returns from his European ban to play his first match in this season's Champions League, while Koke is also back in the starting eleven after missing out on the win over Porto. For Austria Vienna, Alexander Gorgon is out after undergoing knee surgery that could rule him out for the rest of the season.
  • Atletico Madrid: Courtois, Felipe Luis, Alderweireld, Juanfran, Miranda, Tiago, Koke, Raul Garcia, Arda Turan, Gabi, Costa.
  • Austria Vienna: Lindner, Rogulj, Ortlechner, Suttner, Mader, Holland, Dilaver, Royer, Jun, Hosiner, Stankovic.
  • The teams are in ahead of kick-off, so let's run through the two line-ups...
  • Diego Simeone's side have won both their matches in the group thus far, though they lost their 100 percent start to the season at the weekend with defeat to Espanyol. This fixture should see them return to winning ways, however, with the home side not having tasted victory in their last five outings.
  • Hello and welcome to live coverage of today's Champions League encounter between Austria Vienna and Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side currently lead Group G, and a win at Ernst-Happel-Stadion could see them put one foot in the last 16 of the competition. On the other hand, the hosts desperately need a victory if their fairytale European journey is to have a realistic chance of continuing past the group stages. I'm Tom Maston and I'll be guiding you through tonight's events in the Austrian capital.
