Atletico Madrid 1-1 Almeria: Diego Alves Ensures Points Are Shared At Vicente Calderon

A Sergio Aguero goal was cancelled out by a Pablo Piatti on the stroke of half-time.

Atletico Madrid has missed the chance to move into the top five, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Almeria.

The home side wanted to take an early lead, and could have had one in the first two minutes, as Diego Forlan's lobbed effort went inches wide of the post.

Almeria 'keeper Diego Alves made sure the scoreline was still 0-0 when he made a great diving save to stop Sergio Aguero from finishing off a cutback from Forlan.

Karl Uche almost breaks the deadlock on the half-hour mark, when his well-struck shot beats David De Gea, but cannons off the post and out to safety.

Los Rojiblancos were rewarded in the 33rd minute, when Aguero scored his fourth goal from three matches. The Argentine tapped home a loose ball from only a metre out to make it 1-0.

The lead only lasted 12 minutes, Pablo Piatti allowed the ball to bounce in front of him, and volley home the equaliser off the post on the stroke of half-time.

Atletico wanted to start the second half in the same vein they started the first, and Forlan and Simao combined for a neat one-two which saw the Portuguese get his low shot off, but it was punched away by Alves.

Calls for a penalty were waved away by the referee on 73 minutes, as Diego Costa tried to make an immediate impact after replacing Forlan.

Carlos Garcia almost conceded an own goal three minutes later, as Simao's dangerous free-kick came off the defender's head and went in the back of the net.
