Was not tested as much as he perhaps expected to be, but coped very well with any attempts sent his way.
Didn’t give Young a moment of peace all game, which more-or-less nullified the winger’s presence in the game. A superb job against a man on form at the moment. Almost scored one of the great European goals in the opening stages of the second-half when he rounded three United players inside the area, but lacked the composure to slot home.
Kept Park and Young quiet and supplied an attacking support down the left. Ran and ran all game, along with the rest of his team.
Supplied the pin-point long ball from defence for Llorente’s goal before heading over a goal-bound Giggs shot minutes later. Was everywhere all game.
Enjoyed himself in the middle of the pitch. Seemed utterly undaunted by the names in the opposition midfield, and triumphed.
In stark comparison to Cleverley, seemed to find plenty of space inside midfield. Was dictating the play before the opening goal and then capped off his performance with one of his own to kill the tie off.
Supported by Iturraspe and De Marcos in the middle of the park, enjoyed the level of freedom the former appeared to. Excellent work rate throughout.
Part of the sturdy Bilbao defence that kept the sporadic United attacks at bay, with apparent ease. Never looked under pressure.
The glue between Llorente and Munain. Along with the latter, his link up play was superb as he connected midfield and attack. Kept Athletic ticking over throughout.
Lasted less than 40 minutes before being forced off. Made desired impact in his short time on the pitch though by scoring an absolutely glorious volley mid-way through the first half to give his side some breathing space.
Wonderful link up between himself and Llorente set him free inside the area inside the first 15 minutes, only for him to hit the post.
Couldn’t do anything about either goal, what with the execution of the volley and the deflection for the second. Apart from that, he was barely tested despite the dominance of Athletic’s performance.
Strong enough under wave after wave of attack. Was penned back in his half, like Rafael, so could not impose himself further up the field.
Struggled to get forward, which he usually likes to do, with the continue threat of De Marcos and Muniain down Athletic’s left flank. Seemed to get very frustrated as the game drew on.
Hauled off after 60 minutes to be replaced by Smalling. Was turned on more than one occasion by the Athletic attack. Looked nervy at times. Not himself.
As with Ferdinand, had to be on his toes continually and definitely found it mentally and physically tiring. His concentration seemed to lag as the game drew on.
Invisible in the first-half and no better after the break. As with many of his team-mates, just could not cope with the intensity of the Basque side. Was replaced by Pogba on the hour mark.
For all of his industry, just couldn’t find the key pass. That was more down to the Bilbao defence than his own failings.
Was the most effective of the United midfielders, sending in cross after cross in the first half but was chasing shadows along with his team-mates in the second half. Was applauded by the Bilbao crowd when he was replaced after 68 minutes.
Found it hard to cope and find space in among a swarm of Athletic players. Again, harsh to pin-point any personal fault, just could not stop the Basque barrage, along with the rest of the team.
Found it very tough against Iraola in the first-half. Switched flanks for parts in the second without much more luck. Had little impact overall.
A thunderbolt of a consolation was the reward of much hustle and bustle throughout. Could not break down an organised defence for the majority. Moved deeper into midfield for more luck, but struggled just as much.
- 13 Raúl
- 23 Ekiza
- 6 San José
- 17 Iñigo Pérez
Came on for he injured Llorente just before half-time. Adjusted to the speed of the play immediately and did his job very well as Bilbao dominated in the second period.
- 2 Toquero
Replaced the tired legs of Munain with eight minutes remaining.
- 40 B. Amos
- 20 Fábio
Came on for Ferdinand on the hour mark and contributed nothing of note.
- 22 P. Scholes
Came on for the ineffectual Carrick after an hour to supply an attacking threat. Saw more of the ball but could not do anything positive with it.
Came on for Giggs with just over 20 minutes to go. Failed to get much of a touch of the ball, let alone any impact.
