Like Tim Krul, he was largely untested but got down well to save one routine effort in the first half and then, with two minutes to go, saved well to deny Siem De Jong a winning goal.
A solid presence as ever, who will perhaps benefit from playing alongside a similarly reliable stopper in Philippe Senderos - if he stays at Villa Park. Should have scored after the break but jumped too early and got caught under the ball but otherwise impressed.
Mopped up well with a couple of good clearing headers, looking solid in general. Not tested on the ground, which is perhaps fortunate. Sent a header well off target when he really should have done better.
Looked good going forward, providing some powerful runs down his right flank but also on one occasion through the middle. Could be an important player after being "bombed" out during 2013-14.
Villa's best player on the whole, getting forward well and putting in some good crosses, while cutting out any danger at the back. Quieter on the attack after the break but worked hard defensively and the fans took to him. Subbed late on with an injury.
As ever, was tidy in possession but often guilty of holding on to the ball for too long.
A quiet showing on the whole but did make an important, strong tackle to deny Newcastle's counter after N'Zogbia's slip. Subsituted for Darren Bent with 15 to go.
Provides a bit of much-needed impetus in Villa's midfield, happy to bring the ball forward. Not afraid to shoot, either, but not accurately on this occasion. Wasted one good opportunity to play in Kieran Richardson and was brought down on the break for Williamson's red card.
Looked one of Villa's best players before the break, both running at his man and with his passing. Curled a free kick just wide but also slipped when trying to turn his man which nearly presented Newcastle with a dangerous counter. Booked for foul on Remy Cabella and later taken off.
Did not get the chance to use his pace and dribbling and was instead trying to feed off the type of balls which would better suit Christian Benteke. Therefore, no impact.
Another very quiet performance. Booked for leathering the ball into the crowd after being flagged for handball.
Untested in the main.
Impressive at the back until his late red card for stopping a Villa counter but also had a great chance all alone at the back post, only to mis-hit his volley.
Struggled with Charles N'Zogbia's pace at times but coped well second half even with Alan Hutton's impressive contribution.
Looked solid at the back, particularly with one sliding challenge to block an Aly Cissokho cross, and got forward very well, using the ball intelligently inside and on the flanks. One shot which whistled just over.
Looked dominant from the off, dealing well with Villa's albeit diminished aerial threat, and calm in possession. Snuffed out a couple of threatening situations well, too.
A strong, imposing presence through the middle, carrying the ball forward and looking for the forwards, but well shackled in the main.
Calm in possession, tracked his runners well and was solid when forced to defend in his own area. One free kick well over the bar. More expansive in his passing after the break but no added impact.
A weak performance. Too casual on one early attempt to cross and then slipped and dragged the ball wide when he should have scored. Not strong enough to track back with Aly Cissokho. Picked out Mike Williamson with a great ball but the defender wasted it.
Tracked his runners well into defence, nothing to shout about in possession and sent one shot wildly off target. Subbed for Siem de Jong.
Really should have scored at the back post but miscued. Good searching pass out to Cabella shortly afterwards. Not a lot to write home about after that.
Looked good in possession, especially holding the ball up in deep areas and laying it off to team-mates, though he got no chances in the area and seemed to be dominated in the air closer to the box. Became more and more ineffectual and was withdrawn late on.
Came on late for the injured Cissokho and lost Ayoze Perez for one cross but went unpunished.
First involvement off the bench was a delicately chipped pass to Hutton, which resulted in a corner. Looked less assured in possession after that. Booked.
Came on with 15 minutes to go but barely got a touch.
