Atletico Madrid and Almeria put on an energetic and entertaining display as they shared the spoils at the Juegos Mediterraneos in a 2-2 draw.

The first chance of the game fell to Almeria captain Crusat in the 8th minute. An over-hit cross landed at the feet of the winger, whose deflected strike was saved thanks to the quick reactions of David De Gea.

The few occasions Los Colchoneros advanced near the opposition box, they wasted it with alarming persistence. Aguero and Forlan looked frustrated as their midfielders' passing was wayward and erratic for the majority of the opening to the game.

Crusat again attempted to break the deadlock and was within inches of it this time. His fiercely struck effort with the outside of the boot was tipped over by the outstretched Atleti 'keeper as the strike seemed destined to find the top right corner.

In the 32nd minute, a cross from M'Bami looked to converted into the top corner from Ulloa's side foot finish but a hand from the goalie managed to keep the score level until the next attack at least.

Suddenly out of nothing, Los Rojiblancos found themselves in the lead. A dinked ball over the top of a static home defence by Tiago set Sergio Aguero free to slam a finish into the roof of the net.

Diego Alves in the home goal, who hadn't a shot of note to deal with before that, had a look of great surprise on his face. As the referee blew his whistle for half-time, the home side undeservedly found themselves going into the dressing room a goal behind.

After the interval, it only took Almeria 3 minutes to level matters through the influential Crusat. His third attempt of the game was by far his best as he arrowed in a bullet of a shot into Atleti's top corner to give his side a justified equaliser.

Aguero managed to conjure up another goal on the hour mark. Atletico restored their lead as Kun dummied a defender before slotting in at Alves' near post with an assured left foot daisy cutter.

However, they allowed their hosts to come back into the game by taking their foot off the gas once more. Shortly after scoring an offside goal, they equalised through Goitom and no flag could be raised this time. Bernal whipped in a teasing cross and the diving head of Goitom sent it out of De Gea's reach to the bottom corner in the 75th minute.

The game was destined for a nail-biting final quarter of an hour. Aguero nearly completed his hat-trick but his effort trickled just wide while the alert Alves got a firm hand to a speculative shot from Reyes at the end.

The score finished 2-2 and leaves both teams with much to ponder over. Almeria remain in 18th position, a point off safety, while Atletico are just a single point off a Europa League spot.
