Player Ratings: Malaga 2-0 Porto (Agg 2-1)

Goal.com rates the players on show as Isco and Roque Santa Cruz turn the tie on its head and send los Boquerones into the quarter-finals for the first time in their history

By Tom Webber

  • Willy Caballero

    Willy Caballero

Was largely a spectator as Porto never provided any sort of menace in the final third. He did not come up against a single shot on target from the visitors for the full 90 minutes and so it was impossible to stand out.

  • Jesús Gámez
    44
    2
    3.50

    Jesús Gámez

Had a consistent game at right-back because he did not have much to deal with as Porto lacked any piercing threat down their left. He supported Joaquin consistently and put some good crosses into the area.

  • Weligton
    38
    2
    3.50

    Weligton

The Malaga captain anticipated the play, regularly popping up in front of the Porto forwards just as they thought they had found a way through. He swept up at the back to great effect in a fine performance.

  • Martín Demichelis
    51
    3
    3.00

    Martín Demichelis

Alongside Weligton he helped limit the space on offer to the tricky Martinez. He remained tight to his man and restricted the space along the back line that the Colombian had so readily exploited in the first leg.

  • Antunes
    43
    3
    3.50

    Antunes

Found it difficult up against the pacy combination of Danilo and Valera at points in the first half. However, his stinging effort in the 36th minute signaled the start of Malaga's best moment of the match.

  • Joaquín
    62
    2
    4.00

    Joaquín

Made a brilliant run in the ninth minute but could not bring Toulalan's pass under control. He had some bright moments wide on the right, causing problems as he drifted in from the flanks.

  • Jérémy Toulalan
    46
    4
    3.00

    Jérémy Toulalan

The Frenchman sent a sublime pass over the top for Joaquin early on but his team-mate could not quite bring it under control. He mostly went through the motions for the rest of the game and coasted through the game.

  • Manuel Iturra
    45
    4
    3.50

    Manuel Iturra

A combative performance from the Chilean as he continually sniffed out the ball and put the Porto players under instant pressure. He helped his team defensively, screening to great effect.

  • Isco

    Isco Top of the Match

The young Spaniard was not afforded a lot of space during the first half, but when he finally engineered room to manoeuvre the result was devastating as he opened the scoring with a stunning strike. He went on to have a much greater influence on the game and distributed the ball brilliantly.

  • Javier Saviola
    61
    7
    3.50

    Javier Saviola

Struggled to find space to test Helton in the first half but was tireless in the final third. He was perhaps unfortunate to have had a goal disallowed and combined with Isco to excellent effect in the second half.

  • Júlio Baptista
    41
    7
    3.00

    Júlio Baptista

He did not link up well with Saviola particularly well and actually spent very little time in possession as he still looks to be some way from his best. Nevertheless he could not be accused of lacking effort.

Substitutions

  • Sergio Sánchez
    19
    9

    Sergio Sánchez

Brought on in place of Joaquin in the 88th minute.

  • Lucas Piazon
    48
    6

    Lucas Piazon

Came on for Saviola in the 78th minute but had very little time to affect the outcome of the game.

  • Roque Santa Cruz
    76
    4
    3.50

    Roque Santa Cruz

Replaced Julio Baptista in the 74th minute and netted the decisive goal with a solid header just three minutes later.

  • Helton
    8
    15
    3.00

    Helton

The Brazilian made a decent save from Antunes in the 37th minute but was lucky not to be punished by Saviola for spilling the ball moments later as the Malaga goal was disallowed. He was caught out of position as Isco found the net.

  • Danilo
    5
    18
    2.50

    Danilo

Started the game brightly as he bombed on to support Valera down the left. He sent a decent chance well over the bar in the ninth minute and did not get into as good of a position again. Looked suspect defensively.

  • Eliaquim Mangala
    3
    17
    2.50

    Eliaquim Mangala

The young Frenchman relied a bit too much on his physique on the night and looked sluggish when it came to tracking runners through the middle of the defence. His marking was lax as Santa Cruz nodded in the winner.

  • Alex Sandro
    6
    16
    2.50

    Alex Sandro

The former Santos full-back was guilty of taking too long to close down the players at the back as he perhaps ventured forward too frequently. He left far too much space in behind and could not deal with Joaquin.

  • Nicolás Otamendi
    12
    12
    3.00

    Nicolás Otamendi

Picked up an early booking for an over-zealous challenge and was walking a tightrope from then on. However, he maintained his composure for most of the game and helped Malaga dominate aerially at the back.

  • Lucho González
    18
    12
    3.00

    Lucho González

The Porto captain was forced to chase the ball rather than get it down and play and he showed no desire to close down Isco as the Spaniard put Malaga 1-0 up. However, he hunted it down in the middle and was always close to the action.

  • Joao Moutinho
    20
    13
    3.50

    Joao Moutinho

Struggled to totally stamp his mark on the game as possession by no means favoured his team. He still showed an innate ability to keep the ball under pressure but was withdrawn at half-time.

  • Fernando
    6
    16
    3.00

    Fernando

Patrolled the middle of the park competently enough but did not always look comfortable when forced to move the ball forward. Malaga enjoyed the majority of possession after the restart, but he provided support for the Porto defence whenever it was needed.

  • Steven Defour
    14
    36
    2.00

Steven Defour Flop of the Match

The Belgian started wide on the left and was mainly involved due to his rash challenges in the first half. A truly idiotic moment early in the second half saw him dismissed, bringing an awful evening to a close.

  • Jackson Martínez
    7
    24
    2.50

    Jackson Martínez

Failed to find the kind of space that he enjoyed in the first leg. To be fair, he was not really supplied with any great source of service and so never really tested Caballero throughout the game.

  • Silvestre Varela
    4
    22
    2.50

    Silvestre Varela

Started the game brightly as he displayed an impressive understanding with Danilo and also ventured on a couple of decent dribbles. But as the game continued his influence reduced and he was withdrawn just before the hour mark.

Substitutions

  • Maicon Pereira Roque
    3
    14
    2.50

    Maicon Pereira Roque

Replaced Valera in the 58th minute but did not provide additional stability in defence. He had a goal correctly ruled out for offside but was nowhere near the ball on the corner from which Santa Cruz scored.

  • James Rodríguez
    23
    11
    2.50

    James Rodríguez

Came on for Moutinho at half-time but found it difficult to support Martinez as his team were quickly reduced to 10 men.

  • Christian Twasam Atsu
    17
    12
    3.00

    Christian Twasam Atsu

Brought on for Alex Sandro in the 70th minute and used his pace to get at the Malaga defence.
