Player Ratings: Italy 2-4 Brazil

Goal evaluates the performances of everyone involved in Salvador, where Fred's double earned Brazil first place in Group A

By Kris Voakes in the Arena Fonte Nova, Salvador

  • Gianluigi Buffon
    127
    278
    2.00

    Gianluigi Buffon

Got down low to keep out Hulk’s effort in the opening minute, but then saw his defence leave Dante unmarked after parrying away Fred’s header. Left standing by Neymar’s superb free-kick and should have done better with Marcelo’s effort which provided the clincher for Fred.

  • Giorgio Chiellini
    205
    102
    3.00

    Giorgio Chiellini

Pulled off a magnificent challenge on Oscar in the very first minute to deny Brazil the lead, then held off Fred to stop the striker getting a shot on target. Could have been quicker to react to Fred’s run when the striker made it 3-1, but soon pulled one back at the other end to keep the game alive.

  • Mattia De Sciglio
    293
    102
    3.50

    Mattia De Sciglio

Showed composure early on to close off Oscar, then outmuscled Dani Alves brilliantly to regain possession for Italy just as Brazil were becoming dominant.

  • Leonardo Bonucci
    80
    162
    2.50

    Leonardo Bonucci

Found himself completely drawn in by the ball to leave Neymar with a great chance to open the scoring. Didn’t convince when asked to turn by the nimble Brazil forward line.

  • Ignazio Abate
    112
    129
    2.50

    Ignazio Abate

Managed to somehow work his way out of a couple of tight corners as Brazil pressed high up the field, but his afternoon came to an early end after injuring his arm following Neymar’s challenge.

  • Antonio Candreva
    160
    91
    3.00

    Antonio Candreva

Didn’t look full of confidence when carrying the ball forward on the break in the first half, but later showed more positivity and was a real threat down the right.

  • Alberto Aquilani
    62
    221
    2.50

    Alberto Aquilani

Drew derision from the home crowd when he went straight through Dante, but let the home side off the hook on a couple of occasions when he could have weighted passes better on the break. Found it hard to get close to Brazil’s midfield at times.

  • Claudio Marchisio
    90
    185
    2.00

    Claudio Marchisio

Shown a yellow card for kicking out at Oscar having been fooled by the Chelsea man’s skill, and twice back-heeled the ball straight to a Brazilian player. Produced very little of real note on the ball for the most part.

  • Riccardo Montolivo
    84
    167
    2.50

    Riccardo Montolivo

Saw his afternoon curtailed just 24 minutes in due to injury and was replaced by Emanuele Giaccherini.

  • Mario Balotelli
    362
    73
    3.00

    Mario Balotelli

Appeared somewhat sluggish and sulky early on in proceedings, kicking the air in frustration at one point after losing the ball in Brazil territory. But after the break it was his magnificent assist for Giaccherini that brought Italy level, and he brought a save out of Julio Cesar with a superbly-struck free-kick.

  • Alessandro Diamanti
    61
    236
    2.00

Alessandro Diamanti Flop of the Match

Never had any real effect on the game, remaining anonymous for long spells as Italy found it difficult to get a foothold in the match. Replaced by El Shaarawy for the last 20 minutes.

Substitutions

  • Christian Maggio
    181
    65
    3.00

    Christian Maggio

Replaced Abate after his injury on the half-hour mark, but his foul led to Neymar’s free-kick goal. Did well to then shrug Neymar off the ball as last man with the No.10 looking to add a second to his personal tally. Saw his thunderous header come back off the bar as Italy pressed for an equaliser.

  • Emanuele Giaccherini
    289
    50
    3.50

    Emanuele Giaccherini

Came on in place of the injured Montolivo and struck a superb equaliser following Balotelli’s fantastic flicked assist. Was a busy presence throughout and was often involved in dangerous Italy moves.

  • Stephan El Shaarawy
    200
    94
    2.50

    Stephan El Shaarawy

Brought on for the ineffective Diamanti and his movement kept the Brazilian back line on its toes.

  • Julio César
    109
    136
    2.00

    Julio César

Had nothing to do in the first half, but was beaten twice after the break. If Giaccherini’s strike was clean, Chiellini’s was anything but and the keeper may believe he could have done better.

  • Daniel Alves
    120
    160
    2.50

    Daniel Alves

Advanced regularly down the right-hand side, but his occasional sloppy pass at the back put his side in trouble. Could have done better from Marcelo’s excellent cross-field ball, while he was well muscled off the ball by De Sciglio when well placed to cross.

  • Thiago Silva
    272
    54
    3.00

    Thiago Silva

Had a great tussle with Mario Balotelli for much of the game, tracking the Italy No.9 superbly for long spells. The shining light in Brazil’s back line as he so often is.

  • David Luiz
    124
    177
    2.50

    David Luiz

Booked for an early foul on Balotelli, he then put his continued involvement in doubt when picking up a knock to his right thigh. Eventually replaced by Dante after admitting defeat in his battle to continue.

  • Marcelo
    279
    94
    3.00

    Marcelo

Played one magnificent cross-field ball for Dani Alves which just escaped the right-back in an advanced position, but he was sometimes lacking when well placed until his effort was parried by Buffon for Fred to wrap up the points.

  • Hernanes
    182
    73
    3.00

    Hernanes

Looked to be dynamic from the middle of the park as he showed his ability on the ball, but his effectiveness faded as the first half went on. Played some key passes to begin moves in the goal-heavy second half.

  • Oscar
    193
    120
    3.00

    Oscar

Looked a little sloppy in his ball retention at times, but he was also involved in some of Brazil’s most fluid moves as they upped the ante in the second half.

  • Luiz Gustavo
    170
    99
    3.00

    Luiz Gustavo

Found his way into the book for pulling back Candreva as the winger broke forward down the right, but he was largely a very tidy presence in front of the back four. Dominated the Italian midfield for long spells of the game with his incise delivery.

  • Fred
    366
    92
    4.00

    Fred Top of the Match

Couldn’t quite turn home the ball under pressure from Chiellini after Hernanes’ cross, then saw Buffon keep out his header only for Dante to net the loose ball. Held off Chiellini with fantastic strength to put Brazil 3-1 up and was quickest to collect Buffon’s parry for the clincher.

  • Neymar
    461
    141
    3.50

    Neymar

Could have done better than to scuff the ball wide when well placed inside the area, then found his way into the referee’s notebook for following through on Abate. He had the last laugh though, curling home a fantastic free-kick to give Brazil a lead they wouldn’t lose before being replaced by Bernard.

  • Hulk
    122
    175
    2.50

    Hulk

Lost out to Marchisio when he found himself in Brazil’s third, but Balotelli couldn’t capitalise. Of the front four he was probably the least prominent, and was replaced by Fernando with 15 minutes left.

Substitutions

  • Dante
    267
    69
    3.00

    Dante

Replaced the injured David Luiz late in the first half, and an error in judgement soon after almost gifted a chance to Balotelli. More than made up for it though when turning home Buffon’s parry after Fred had been denied by the keeper.

  • Fernando
    80
    91

    Fernando

Appeared late on as a replacement for Hulk.

  • Bernard
    125
    89
    2.50

    Bernard

Brought on for the final quarter in place of Neymar and was a busy presence on the left.
