A tight encounter saw les Verts win through as they held their nerve in the shootout, and Goal.com was on hand to judge all the actors

    Stéphane Ruffier

Produced a massive save to deny Ibrahimovic when through on goal as he continued to show the kind of strong form that has some critics pushing for him to be involved in the France squad. Made an even better save from the same player in extra time before blocking Thiago Silva's penalty. A match-winning contribution.

    Faouzi Ghoulam

Normally likes to raid forward, but was rather restrained initially as he was doubtless mindful of PSG’s attacking potency. Started to break forward more after the break, which he did so effectively, but this came at the expense of his defensive strength.

  • Loïc Perrin

    Loïc Perrin

Still playing in the heart of the defence, Perrin was lucky to be given a foul when he slipped as Ibrahimovic was in close attendance, but his presence in the back four continues to be an indisputable boost to les Verts.

  • M. Bayal

    M. Bayal

Surprised fans with his composed performances since coming into the team, but the side of the centre-back the supporters dislike was on show after 10 minutes when he presented a chance to Ibrahimovic. Looked strong after that moment, as he made a decisive challenge on Ibra in extra time.

Used his experience well on the right of the Saint-Etienne rearguard. It was rare that PSG made any great progress down his flank, though he was reticent to push forward and rarely ventured much over the halfway line. Made a dreadful error in extra time that should have been punished by Ibrahimovic.

  • Jérémy Clément

    Jérémy Clément

The former PSG central midfielder gave another solid performance in the heart of the home side’s midfield. Made a particularly impressive driving run in the second half of the match, but was largely a defensive presence for his side.

  • Fabien Lemoine

    Fabien Lemoine

Broke up play well and showed an excellent range of passing to launch a number of counterattacks for Saint-Etienne. Tried an ambitious effort from a long way out in the second half, but this flew well off target.

  • Guilavogui

    Guilavogui

Provides dynamism in the middle of Sainte’s midfield, yet he showed at times tonight that he still has to refine his game a little. Gave the ball away when he had chances to pick a killer pass.

  • Romain Hamouma

    Romain Hamouma

Made a big impact from the bench at the weekend and deservedly started this encounter. Was a real threat to the PSG rearguard, flashing a shot over from 25 yards and picking up some good positions as he drifted inside off his flank. Quelled somewhat after the break and replaced late on.

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Decisive when Saint-Etienne beat PSG in Paris, the Gabon international attacker was unlucky not to give his side the lead in the first half when he had a header cleared from the line. Probed in the second half but without much luck. Scored the winning penalty.

  • Max-Alain Gradel

    Max-Alain Gradel

Took up some good positions and got into some promising areas, but failed to produce enough quality when he had the chance to be decisive. It was little surprise when he was chosen to be the first player replaced, with Brandao taking his spot.

Never really got involved after arriving on the field.

    Renaud Cohade

Failed to really get a grip on the midfield, and was not as exact with his passing as he often is.

  • Brandao

    Brandao

Was his hard-working self, although he was unable to instigate much of a change in the game.

  • Nicolas Douchez

    Nicolas Douchez

PSG’s back-up goalkeeper was given a rare chance from the outset and was never significantly tested over the course of the evening. Had little chance with any of Sainte’s penalties.

  • Thiago Silva

    Thiago Silva

Another terrific performance from the outstanding Brazil international, whose positional awareness is outstanding. When he had the ball at his feet, he invariably used it cleverly, and he did not deserve to be the one to miss the vital penalty.

  • Mamadou Sakho

    Mamadou Sakho

More steel than silk in the middle of the rearguard, the young France defender gave a solid account of himself that was without the kind of individual errors that have sometimes hindered his game over the last year.

  • Maxwell

    Maxwell

Used in a somewhat unfamiliar midfield role, the ex-Barcelona player was just as reliable in the heart of the park as he is at left-back. The Brazilian once again displayed that he is ultra-reliable, even if he is rarely especially eye-catching.

  • Christophe Jallet

    2.00

    Christophe Jallet

Had moments when Gradel escaped his clutches, but the France international right-back was able to recover on every occasion to prevent the danger manifesting itself in the form of a goal. Made a couple of dangerous raids forward.

  • Sylvain Armand

    2.50

    Sylvain Armand

The only player in PSG’s starting XI to previously win Ligue 1, the veteran may not be as technically sound as some of his colleagues, but he makes up for it with experience and know-how. Found wanting for pace at times, but not decisively so.

  • Jérémy Menez
    6
    8
    2.50

    Jérémy Menez

Back in the team after injury and was happy to stretch the home defence with his style of direct dribbling. Drew a number of fouls from the opposition, yet rarely were these in dangerous areas. Taken off with around 10 minutes left.

  • Blaise Matuidi
    6

    Blaise Matuidi

Back at his old stomping ground, the midfielder was not the dynamic driving force that he often is in the centre of the field. Although he was far from quiet, he was not the bundle of energy that he often seems to be, having been handed quite a disciplined role in the middle of the field.

  • Clément Chantôme
    1
    11
    2.00

    Clément Chantôme

Guilty of some rather naïve defensive work as he was prone to diving into challenges and gave away a couple of free kicks around the box that Saint-Etienne might have exploited. The weakest member of PSG’s central three.

  • Ezequiel Lavezzi
    7
    13
    1.50

    Ezequiel Lavezzi

Caught just offside in the first half as he broke through to put the ball on the net, and was unlucky not to be better rewarded for an industrious showing. Had started the game very brightly but did not build from that.

  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic
    23
    14
    2.50

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

His presence from the outset showed how seriously PSG were treating this match, and the giants Swede was often to the fore. Missed a great chance after 10 minutes when presented with the ball by Bayal Sall. Lacked direction with his shooting.

Substitutions

  • Nenê

    Nenê

Arrived onto the field just before 80 minutes had elapsed and injected his team with fresh impetus.
