Algeria 0-2 Togo: Adebayor & Wome at the double as Foxes suffer elimination

The Tottenham striker helped his nation to all three points against Valid Halilhodzic's men, meaning Cote d'Ivoire become the competition's first side to reach the quarter-finals

Algeria became the first country to exit the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday after they crashed to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Togo.

Given that the two teams lost their opening games, it was a make-or-break match for both sides, but Didier Six’s men eventually came out on top thanks to goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Dove Wome.

Nonetheless, it was the 1990 champions who started the brighter, creating a host of chances in the opening 25 minutes as Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa impressed to keep Algeria at bay.

Tottenham striker and Togolese talisman Adebayorsoon capitalised on the missed opportunities, latching onto a through ball in the 31st minute and beating Rais M’Bolhi.

Slimani nearly drew Algeria level moments later, but Agassa’s resilience prevented the 24-year-old from planting the ball in the back of the net.

Togo, who have not qualified beyond the group stage in their last six outings of the competition, managed to survive several Algerian onslaughts towards the end of the first half.

And Valid Halilhodzic’s men continued to mount pressure on their West African opponents after the break, but Agassa stood firm, although several errors made by the 34-year-old went unpunished.

The match then had to be halted for five minutes in the final stages, after the referee spotted a fault with the Togolese goal post.

And with 13 minutes of added time on the clock, the Algerians were then caught on the break as they pressed for an equaliser when substitute Wome beat M’Bolhi to make it 2-0.

The defeat leaves Algeria with no points after two matches following a 1-0 defeat by Tunisia in their 2013 Afcon opener.

They also become the first team to have been knocked out of the tournament, with the outcome of their final Group D match against Cote d'Ivoire now rendered insignificant.

The Elephants are also the first team to qualify for the quarter-final stage after becoming a beneficiary of Algeria’s defeat.
