    J. Penedo

Hard not to feel sorry for the goalkeeper, who just wasn't given sufficient protection. Nothing he could have done about any of the goals and, to be honest, if ti had not been for Penedo, who produced some terrific stops, this would have been a cricket score.

  • F. Baloy

    F. Baloy

Did his best to contain Iniesta but was repeatedly left utterly bamboozled by the Barcelona man's brilliant footwork. The one consolation? He wasn't alone in that regard. Still, his frustration ultimately manifested itself in a wild hack at Busquets, an indiscretion which was punished by Sergio Ramos in emphatic style.

  • C. Rodríguez

    C. Rodríguez Flop of the Match

Showed plenty of heart and determination but was just unable to cope with the intricate interplay of Spain's forwards, as evidenced by the way in which he was caught so flat-footed in the build-up to Pedro's opener.

  • E. Dasent

    E. Dasent

Fared a little better than those alongside him at the back, in the first half but still struggled to nullify Spain's attacking threat down the right flank, particularly when Navas came on in the second half.

  • B. Pérez

    B. Pérez

Again, another player who was relatively neat in tidy in possession, but did nothing to prevent Spain from weaving pretty patterns in midfield.

  • Jean Cedeño

    2.50

    Jean Cedeño

Like his defensive colleagues, he was at sixes and sevens at regular intervals. Just far too easily pulled out of position, as evidenced by the which he was drawn to the ball when Iniesta ran right at the heart of the Panama defence 16 minutes in.

  • G. Gómez

    0
    2.50

    G. Gómez

Actually passed it well when he managed to get on the ball, but those opportunities were few and far between, with Gomez spending most of his time chasing shadows. However, he'll forever remember this as the night he scored a Panenka penalty against Iker Casillas. His joyous celebration was heart-warming stuff.

  • R. Escobar
    1

    2.00

    R. Escobar

Threatened on occasion down the right, sparking some decent attacks, but was starved of quality ball and spent a large chunk of the game on the back foot.

  • J. Pérez

    2.50

    J. Pérez

Picked out a few nice passes for Torres but he was another victim of Panama's inability to get on the ball.

  • M. Sánchez

    2.50

    M. Sánchez

Was always willing to get on the ball and take on the Spain defence, but he was just not given enough chances to do so.

  • Gabriel Torres

    2.50

    Gabriel Torres

Most certainly did not shy away from an unenviable task at hand and looked dangerous enought when given some time and space. However, he was ultimately just too isolated to make a difference.

    Armando Cooper

Thrown on in place of Perez early in the second period but didn't make a major impact.

    Quintero

Saw just over half an hour of action, but made little impression on the proceedings.

    N. Barahona

Came on around the hour mark and was full of energy and endeavour. Indeed, it came as no surprise that he was the man who won the penalty after surging into the area and past Fabregas, who clumsily knocked the Panama No.10 over.

  • Rolando Algandona

    Rolando Algandona

Made his entrance in the dying minutes but struggled to keep up with the pace of the game.

    Aníbal Cesis Godoy

Took over in defence from Rodriguez but was unable to bring any order to the Panama back-line.

  • Víctor Valdés

    3.00

    Víctor Valdés

Traveled all the way to Panama only to stand and watch as his team-mates kept the ball expertly. Was no doubt bored between the sticks but still managed to pick out a few decent cross-field passed when he saw the ball. No saves of note to make.

  • Raúl Albiol
    7
    4
    3.00

    Raúl Albiol

Marshalled Blas Perez well as the Panama frontman barely got a sniff all evening. Dominated him aerially and showed a turn of pace whenever facing his own goal. Solid and reliable.

  • Jordi Alba
    18
    2
    3.50

    Jordi Alba

Was bright in the opening stages and looked Spain’s best threat along with Juan Mata down the left-hand side. His team always had the ball so he spent the match as an extra attacker. Just didn’t see enough of the ball as the game progressed.

  • Juanfran
    9

    3.50

    Juanfran

Has a terrific engine and displayed this in abundance tonight. Got up and down the right wing effortlessly and did not have a lot of defensive duties, which allowed him to get forward and get a few decent crosses into the box.

  • Beñat
    9
    1
    3.50

    Beñat

A very competent performance from the Real Betis man. Did not look out of play in an all-star line-up and displayed an extremely classy touch in midfield. Should have perhaps picked out a few more incisive passes but it was a commendable second cap for him.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján

Andrés Iniesta Luján Top of the Match

Only 45 minutes of play from the maestro tonight but didn’t he do lots. Set up the first goal with an incisive pass and provided a superb assist for David Villa’s strike. Ran the match and excelled in the space he was given.

  • Busquets
    18
    4
    3.50

    Busquets

Bossed the midfield and went about his passing with a true swagger. Had the freedom of the park in deeper areas to pick out passes to the wings and slide the ball forward through the middle.

  • Javi Martínez
    14
    2
    3.00

    Javi Martínez

With Albiol taking care of lone striker, Perez, he ventured out of defence and found himself beside Busquets. This helped Spain take a foothold in the match and command the central areas.

  • David Villa
    23
    3
    4.00

    David Villa

Tested the waters with a couple of superbly struck shots in the opening stages from the edge of the area and found the net with an expertly taken finish 30 minutes in. Always showed for the ball and linked up well with every member of the Spain frontline.

  • Juan Mata
    31
    3
    4.00

    Juan Mata

Integrated himself back into the Spain team well and showed plenty of neat touches in the final third. Came close to getting on the scoresheet with a well-struck free kick but saw his attempt just clear the crossbar.

  • Pedro
    20
    2
    4.00

    Pedro

Opened the scoring with a clinical strike into the bottom left corner and topped of an-all round vibrant display with a moment of genius just before the break to dummy the ball past Panama goalkeeper Penedo, which saw him score with an easy tap-in.

Substitutions

  • Cesc Fàbregas

    Cesc Fàbregas

Was excellent after the his introduction and drifted dangerously in and around the Panama box. His performance was tarnished somewhat when he gave away the penalty in the last minute which cost his team a clean sheet.

  • Jesús Navas González
    12

    4.00

    Jesús Navas González

Showed electric pace down the right side and was a constant threat to the Panama defence in the second period. Set up Susaeta’s debut goal with a superb run and cross.

  • Roberto Soldado

    3.00

    Roberto Soldado

Was desperate to get on the scoresheet but saw an attempt brilliantly saved by Penedo and lashed a strike wide of the post. Almost grabbed a fantastic assist with a dinked cross to the back post only to see his team-mate, Navas, strike the post.

  • Iker Casillas

    Iker Casillas

Did not have much more to do than Valdes apart from pick the ball out of the back of the net after conceding the penalty late on.

  • Sergio Ramos

    Sergio Ramos

Scored Spain’s fourth with a sensational free kick that curled into the top bag and generally looked lively after coming on.

  • Susaeta

    Susaeta

A good debut. Missed a sitter shortly after coming on but made up for it by scoring the fifth and final goal for La Roja.
