Player Ratings: Lazio 0-0 Tottenham

The Biancocelesti and Spurs played out another scoreless draw with Libor Kozak spurning a number of chances as Hugo Lloris produced a brilliant performance to ensure a clean sheet

    Federico Marchetti

Far less troubled than his Spurs counterpart. Made a good save to back-track and push Bale's cross-cum-shot over the bar. Commanding on set-pieces, rushing off his line to punch clear.

  • Michael Ciani

    Michael Ciani

A powerful, athletic presence in Lazio's defence. Fought hard with Adebayor, regularly getting the better of the Togolese. Had a brilliant close range header saved by Lloris.

  • Giuseppe Biava
    17

    3.50

    Giuseppe Biava

Tasked with stepping up and closing down Dempsey. Did do well, swarming the American with the help of Ledesma and the Lazio midfield. Looked more toubled by the pace and movement of Defoe, but Spurs didn't supply him often enough to capitilise.

  • Stefan Radu
    18
    1
    3.50

    Stefan Radu

Got forward well and largely kept Sigurdsson contained. His overlaps occasionally troubled Walker, with the Romanian stepping up and carrying the ball out of defence to good effect. Looked slightly more worried by the pace of Lennon.

  • Luis Cavanda
    16
    2
    3.50

    Luis Cavanda

His positioning was very poor, often several yards behind the rest of Lazio's back-line. More threatening going forward, showing power and speed on the ball. Got to grips with Bale as the game wore on.

  • Stefano Mauri

    3.00

    Stefano Mauri

Only very nominally on the flank, regularly drifting inside to support Kozak. Largely periperhal, but came alive in flutters around the Spurs' box. Could have picked up a couple of assists but for Kozak's poor finishing.

  • Hernanes
    15
    1
    2.50

    Hernanes

Struggled to influence the game in the final third, and was hounded and harried well by Sandro. Ineffective and frustrating, Hernanes was replaced by Ederson with 20 minutes remaining.

  • Alvaro Gonzalez
    12

    Alvaro Gonzalez

The workman in midfield, tracking back, closing down and covering a lot of ground around Lazio's artisans, Hernanes and Ledesma.

  • Senad Lulic

    Senad Lulic

Didn't play especially well, and struggled to adapt to the pace of Walker. Was flagged offside quite a few times and didn't run the offside trap as well as Kozak. Replaced by Candreva with ten minutes remaining.

  • Cristian Ledesma
    18
    4
    3.50

    Cristian Ledesma

Very understated in central midfield, dictating play from deep despite considerable pressure from Dempsey. Had a long-range shot tipped onto the post by Lloris and played a brilliant through-ball for Kozak. Went close with a free-kick in the second half.

  • Libor Kozák

Libor Kozák Flop of the Match

Incredibly wasteful, Kozak missed a horde of glorious chances. The ball rarely stuck with the Czech forward and he came out second best in his duel with Lloris. His first effort was saved by the feet of Lloris, the second he headed wide, the third was dragged past the near post.

Substitutions

  • Ederson

    1

    Ederson

Came on for Hernanes with just over 20 minutes remaining. Won a dangerous free-kick with his first touch of the match. As quiet as Hernanes.

  • Antonio Candreva
    23

    Antonio Candreva

Replaced Lulic with ten minutes remaining, lining up on the right with Mauri moving more central. Looked dangerous on the break.

  • Sergio Floccari

    Sergio Floccari

Replaced the wasteful Kozak but wasn't presented with any chances to score.

  • Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris Top of the Match

Made save after save after save to keep Spurs in the tie. Pushed Ledesma's shot onto the post before racing out to close down Mauri's follow-up effort. Produced a great save with his feet to deny Kozak when the Czech was clean through, before racing off his line to thwart the forward a second time. Saved his best to last with a point blank reflex block from Ciani's header from six yards out.

  • Jan Vertonghen
    17
    7
    2.50

    Jan Vertonghen

Along with the entire Spurs defence, the Belgian allowed far too much space in behind for Kozak to dart into. Stepped up very dangerously. Picked up a yellow card for a cynical foul.

  • Kyle Naughton
    11
    11
    2.50

    Kyle Naughton

Played a number of loose passes, gifting Lazio possession deep in his own half. Didn't look hugely comfortable at left-back and rarely got forward with any degree of success. Contained Mauri well though.

  • Kyle Walker
    14
    10
    3.00

    Kyle Walker

Made a lot of interceptions and marked Lulic well. Seemed to lose sight of the ball and stumble over his feet to allow Cavanda's pass to reach Kozak, with the Czech spurning a great chance. Switched off at times, but looked the most comfortable member of Spurs' defence (especially with regard to the high line)

  • Steven Caulker
    12
    10
    2.50

    Steven Caulker

Occasionally looked nervous, only clearing the ball as far as a dark blue shirt. Struggled with Spurs' high line. Tackled the ball into the path of Kozak to gift the Czech a good opportunity. Carried the ball out of defence well.

  • Gareth Bale
    21
    10
    3.00

    Gareth Bale

Impressed in patches, but wasn't a consistent threat. Looked to have put Spurs ahead but was flagged offside, incorrectly. Whipped in a cross-cum-shot that almost snuck past Marchetti.

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson
    9
    11
    2.50

    Gylfi Sigurdsson

Didn't look comfortable on the right wing and stuggled to impact the match, though looked to enjoy himself more when he drifted centrally. Wasteful and peripheral, the Icelandic midfielder was replaced by Lennon after an hour.

  • Sandro
    23
    3
    3.00

    Sandro

Cleaned up in the middle of the park, closing down players, tackling and intercepting. Dithered on the ball and presented Kozak with a great chance to score, but was otherwise a bullish, tenacious presence.

  • Thomas Carroll
    27
    5
    3.00

    Thomas Carroll

Tottenham's most progressive passer, playing a number of smart balls and rarely conceding possession. Played a brilliant through-ball from which Bale looked to have opened the scoring, but was incorrectly flagged offside. Showed for the ball and kept possession ticking over. Replaced by Dembele with 15 minutes remaining.

  • Clint Dempsey
    6
    26
    2.00

    Clint Dempsey

Largely wasteful, struggling to control the ball and frequently displaying a heavy first touch. Man-marked Ledesma, sticking to the Argentine-born regista like glue, but couldn't curb his influence on the game, especially in the first half. Couldn't affect the match and was replaced by Defoe after an hour.

  • Emmanuel Adebayor
    9
    19
    2.00

    Emmanuel Adebayor

Had a quiet and ineffective night, and sturggled against Lazio's physical centre-backs. Drifted far too much, so often pulling out to the flanks and crossing into a penalty area devoid of white shirts.

Substitutions

  • Aaron Lennon
    9
    15
    2.50

    Aaron Lennon

Came on for Sigurdsson with half an hour remaining, but was little more effective than the Icelandic midfielder. Worked hard in defence.

  • Mousa Dembélé
    24
    8
    2.50

    Mousa Dembélé

Marked his return from injury with a 15 minute cameo, replacing Carroll. Showed signs of fatigue, understandably, and looked off the pace.

  • Jermain Defoe
    7
    11
    2.50

    Jermain Defoe

Replaced Dempsey after an hour. Played higher than Adebayor, allowing the Togo forward to drop deeper. Occasionally darted down the channels, but received little service.
