Gylfi Sigurdsson's second half goal saved Spurs' blushes after sloppy performance in Slovenia, highlighted by the away side's lax defending for Beric's opener

    Jasmin Handanoviç

Rarely troubled in the first half - making one save from a tame Sigurdsson header. Could perhaps have done better with the Spurs equaliser but parried the cross into play. Did better with a similar ball moments later.

  • Aleš Mejač

    Aleš Mejač

Raided forward before half time to hit a decent drive just wide of the far post. Made an incredible block from Defoe on the line but could do little as Sigurdsson bundled the ball home.

    Aleksander Rajčevič

Operated well alongside Arghus and kept the Spurs attack at bay for the majority. Just failed to block the equaliser on the line.

  • Arghus Soares Bordignon

    Arghus Soares Bordignon

Marshalled Defoe well in the first half. Got his blocks in and prevented the slippery Englishman getting away from him. Overall, was solid and not overly troubled.

  • Martin Milec

    Martin Milec

Kept pace with Townsend and snuffed out any danger in the first half. The left wing became barren land for Spurs thanks to Milec's astute work. Perhaps a bit lucky to avoid conceding a penalty for a trip on Naughton. Delivered a fantastic cross for Beric with 15 to play.

  • Dejan Mezga

    Dejan Mezga

Collected the ball in midfield and drove at the heart of the Spurs defence, lifting the ball over Lloris for Beric to score the opening goal of the game. Played well but was replaced by Filipovic with 20 to go.

  • Goran Cvijanovič

Goran Cvijanovič Top of the Match

Provided a bit of incision in midfield alongside his hard work ethic and slipped a nice pass through to Beric for the disallowed goal. Showed lovely technique for a number of passes and looked a talented player.

  • Aleš Mertelj

    Aleš Mertelj

Was the steel to the velvet of Cvijanovic's play in midfield, getting stuck in and trying to prevent Spurs finding space between the lines. Struck one decent effort on target from range.

  • Marcos Magno Morales Tavares

    Marcos Magno Morales Tavares

Forced Lloris into a low save early into the second half but didn't get as much of the ball as he hoped for as fellow Brazilian contained him well. Replaced by Komazec with minutes to play.

  • Agim Ibraimi

    Agim Ibraimi

Looked Maribor's brightest attacker from the right of midfield but did seem to drift out of the game as the match went on. Still, kept Naughton honest.

  • Robert Berić

    Robert Berić

Led the line alone and had the ball in the net after six minutes, albeit after being flagged offside. Did get the ball in the net just before half-time, tapping in after Mezga lifted the ball over Lloris.

    Željko Filipović

Came on for Mezga to provide more solidity in midfield. Looked composed but his passing was a little off.

  • Nikola Komazec

    Nikola Komazec

    Came on late for Tavares.

  • Hugo Lloris

    Hugo Lloris

Forced into diving at the feet of Mezga after his defence went AWOL and was beaten with a dinked finish. Made an assured low stop from Tavares early into the second half.

  • Jan Vertonghen

    3.00

    Jan Vertonghen

Did very little wrong in the opening stages and looked happy to be back in his preferred position. Hit a fantastic shot across goal from range with minutes to go to almost win the game. Comfortable throughout but didn't have a decisive say on the outcome - often difficult from centre-back.

  • Kyle Naughton

    3.00

    Kyle Naughton

Returned to first-team action and looked comfortable enough. Mixed his passing up to some effect but did hit one or two aimless high balls to a frustrated Defoe. Flew forward in the second half and looked to have won a penalty when he went down in the box. Was booked for diving.

  • Kyle Walker

    3.00

    Kyle Walker

Looked more like his old self for the most part. Got forward well and though he was occasionally ponderous in the final third he produced one excellent cross that was begging for someone to tap home.

  • Steven Caulker
    20
    4
    3.50

    Steven Caulker

Looked in control of Beric and mopped up convincingly when turned. Wasn't afraid to carry the ball forward when Maribor sat deep but was guilty of occasionally overplaying. Still, reads the game well and looks at home already in the Spurs back four.

  • Tom Huddlestone
    8
    14
    2.00

    Tom Huddlestone

Displayed his usual array of long passing, finding the wide men when an option and clipping a nice ball into Sandro for Defoe's first half chance. Defended dreadfully for the Maribor opener as he was rounded by Mezga far too easily and this is sadly the reason he will not be a first-team starter under Villas-Boas. A player born for the wrong generation.

  • Aaron Lennon

    Aaron Lennon

Captain for the night and zipped around the pitch adding tempo to Spurs' play. Almost found Sigurdsson's head with a cutback. Switched flanks throughout the game and was fully committed. Didn't find a telling final ball though.

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson
    22
    4
    3.50

    Gylfi Sigurdsson

His passing was a bit wayward in the early stages but did thread a good pass through to Walker in the first half. Had Spurs' first effort on goal, nodding Huddlestone's free-kick at Handanovic. Grabbed the Spurs equaliser, bundling the ball over the line after Defoe's shot was blocked. Replaced by Dempsey with 15 minutes to go but will be pleased with his contribution.

  • Sandro
    13
    3
    3.00

    Sandro

Struck a rasping left-footed shot in the 33rd minute just wide of the right-hand post. Got forward enthusiastically from the middle and found himself in space but not found a number of times. Came off with seven to play.

  • Andros Townsend
    4
    15
    1.50

Andros Townsend Flop of the Match

Very sloppy in the opening stages and was caught in possession a number of times. Struggled to find a rythym and was robbed in midfield in the build-up to the opener. Replaced at half-time; a bad evening for him.

  • Jermain Defoe
    6
    10
    2.50

    Jermain Defoe

Had one sight of goal from a Sandro downward header but volleyed over from inside the box. Other than that, had very little service to work from. Saw his volley blocked on the line in the lead-up to the equaliser. Below par but not really his fault. Wasn't involved as much as he'd hope to be.

Substitutions

  • Jake Livermore

    Jake Livermore

Came on for the last few minutes in place of Sandro.

  • Clint Dempsey

On for Sigurdsson with 15 to go. Was busy and hit one effort on target from range.

  • Iago Falqué

    Iago Falqué

Came on for Townsend at half-time and looked threatening from the left. His low cross from inside the box led to the equaliser and he was generally bright and lively throughout. A thoroughly impressive cameo.
