Player Ratings: Zenit St Petersburg 1-0 Anderlecht

Goal.com was on hand to cast a critical eye over events at the Petrovsky Stadium as a Kerzhakov penalty gave the hosts three points they barely deserved

    Vyacheslav Malafeev

Not much to do all game, but came up with a crucial punch on a free-kick to deny Kanu an open goal.

Alexander Anyukov Top of the Match

Did not provide much in the way of an offensive option for his teams, as he kept his runs forward largely in check. It was hard to fault him for this though, as his play in defence was top notch, and on a rare foray forward, he managed to win a penalty for his side.

  • Domenico Criscito

    Domenico Criscito

The weak link in Zenit’s otherwise solid backline, as most of Anderlecht’s good fortune came down his flank. He was turned inside out by Gillet with embarrassing ease for the visitors’ best chance of the first half.

  • Nicolas Lombaerts

    Nicolas Lombaerts

Hardly put a foot wring at the back, as he often popped up to make an interception or tackle just when Anderlecht looked like finding a sight on goal.

  • Tomás Hubocan

    Tomás Hubocan

Like his defensive partner Lombaerts, Hubocan was solid at the back. A few questionable moments positionally forced him into some dramatic recoveries, but he was rarely bested on the night.

  • Roman Shirokov

    4
    2.00

    Roman Shirokov

Not much on offer from Shirokov today, as he often found himself surrounded by multiple Anderlecht shirts when on the ball, and was dispossessed on a number of occasions.

  • Viktor Faizulin

    Viktor Faizulin

Often muscled off the ball, and many of his passes were misplaced. Much like his side, a disjointed performance in the attacking third.

  • Sergey Semak

    Sergey Semak

Kept things ticking consistently in midfield as most of Zenit’s advances ran through him. Saw plenty of the ball, and was accurate with his passing, while often picking out his teammates in good positions.

  • Axel Witsel

    Axel Witsel

Showed a lot of hustle in the middle of the park, and kept his distribution simple. Understated performance, but stuck to his task well.

  • Aleksandr Kerzhakov

    3.00

    Aleksandr Kerzhakov

Quite simply never got in sync with the rest of his team, as he was caught offside time and time again. However, he kept his cool to bury a second-half penalty that gave his side a vital three points.

  • Hulk

    Hulk

An abject display from the big-money Brazilian. As is his wont, he dominated the ball in advanced positions, but his end product was beyond woeful, as a series of shots were sent into orbit. Despite those repeated failures, he rarely looked to get his teammates involved in play.

    Bruno Alves

A bit clumsy after his introduction, giving away one or two free kicks.

  • Konstantin Zyryanov

    Konstantin Zyryanov

Rather unnoticeable in his spell off the bench.

  • Vladimir Bystrov

    Vladimir Bystrov

Injected some life into the Zenit attack after coming on, but sent a good chance over the bar.

  • Silvio Proto

    Silvio Proto

He was barely troubled all game, as Zenit struggled to muster any shots on target.

  • Olivier Deschacht

    Olivier Deschacht

Did not get forward often, but kept things tidy at the back as he bettered Hulk more times than not whenever they squared up.

  • Bram Nuytinck

    3.00

    Bram Nuytinck

Held his position admirably well, and took no chances when faced with danger, opting to clear the ball rather than work it out from the back.

  • Cheikhou Kouyaté

    3.50

    Cheikhou Kouyaté

The massive Senegalese centre back made every inch of his frame count today, as he came out on top in virtually every physical duel contested with a Zenit player. But this was no uncultured lump, as he also showcased exemplary poise when advancing the ball out of defence.

  • Marcin Wasilewski
    4
    1
    2.50

    Marcin Wasilewski

Though he was largely faultless in the first half, fatigue began to catch up to him after the break as Bystrov was able to beat him a few times.

  • Lucas Biglia
    9
    3
    3.00

    Lucas Biglia

The Argentine’s performance was one of discipline and commitment, as he diligently maintained his defensive position in front of the defence, and was able to spark his team forward with his drive and distribution from deep.

  • Kanu
    3
    3
    2.50

    Kanu

Held his own when battling the Zenit midfield, but was a bit hit or miss when given time on the ball in the opposition half. Played it safe when a more risky pass might have resulted in an opening.

  • Dennis Praet
    2
    2
    2.00

    Dennis Praet

Offered little in an attacking sense, as most of his time was spent providing cover in his own half.

  • Guillaume Gillet
    1
    2
    3.00

    Guillaume Gillet

Looked lively in the first half as he gave Criscito a run for his money, and should have opened the scoring when he found himself in space on one chance. However, his influence waned as time wore on.

  • Milan Jovanović
    4
    15

Milan Jovanović Flop of the Match

Though he found himself in a number of great positions, his shooting was horrible, with a number of efforts sent off target. To add further insult, he conceded the penalty that led to his side's downfall.

  • Tom de Sutter
    1
    2
    2.50

    Tom de Sutter

Linked up well with Jovanovic when on the ball, but those moments were few and far between as he was often isolated in attack.

  • Oleksandr Iakovenko

    Oleksandr Iakovenko

Gave his side some thrust going forward, but to no avail.
