    Vito Mannone

Shaky against Norwich and could have conceded a penalty after just 15 minutes after a coming together with Afellay. Got nowhere near the ball but the Dutchman's theatrics spared him. Had little chance with Huntelaar such were the striker's reactions.

  • Per Mertesacker

    Per Mertesacker

A strong first half, particularly when he launched himself bravely to block Farfan's shot. Should have got closer to Huntelaar for the opener but was miles away from the Dutchman.

  • Thomas Vermaelen

    Thomas Vermaelen

The captain must take some responsibility for a poor Arsenal performance. Tried to lead his side forward but to no avail.

Andre Santos Flop of the Match

An absolute stinker from the Brazilian. Yes, he was isolated far too often. But he was guilty of frequently ball-watching and just could not cope with Farfan and Ushida's pace.

  • Carl Jenkinson

    Carl Jenkinson

Seemed to just stand and watch as Afellay went past him before collapsing over Mannone early on. Made no impact going forward and was substituted late on.

  • Mikel Arteta

    Mikel Arteta

Guilty of giving the ball away early on which almost led to a penalty for Schalke. Made little impact on the game as Schalke dominated the second half.

  • Aaron Ramsey

    Aaron Ramsey

Did not look too comfortable in his position further forward. Worked hard but lacked the pace to trouble the Schalke defence

  • Santi Cazorla

    Santi Cazorla

A rare bright spark for Arsenal. Looked a danger whenever he had the ball, but the Gunners could not get it to him enough to make an impact.

  • Francis Coquelin

    Francis Coquelin

Impressive from the youngster. Screened his defence well but also looked to get forward when he could. Showed plenty of energy and his first touch was excellent. Was within a whisker of setting up the opener just after the break.

  • Lukas Podolski

    Lukas Podolski

Produced a couple of good crosses for Gervinho early on, but faded as the half wore on. Showed no interest in getting back to help out Santos and was replaced in the second half.

  • Gervinho

    Gervinho

At his frustrating best, his movement was good and he had a couple of great chances but dawdled. Looked short of confidence and indecisive. Was rightly booked for a ludicrous dive after he had beaten Jones.

A Champions League debut for the 17-year-old and almost made an instant impact, showing some great skill.

    Lars Unnerstall

A virtual spectator in the first half and had even less to do in the second half. Cannot have expected such an easy evening at the Emirates.

  • Benedikt Höwedes

    Benedikt Höwedes

Handled Gervinho confidently and made a great block from a fierce Vermaelen shot in the first half. Missed a great chance to score just after the break smashing an easy chance over the bar from 12 yards.

  • Atsuto Uchida

    Atsuto Uchida

Did OK defensively but became a real attacking threat down the right and along with Farfan gave Dos Santos a torrid time.

  • Christian Fuchs

    Christian Fuchs

A very quiet first half but became more of an influence after the break with some good delivery from the left.

  • Joel Matip

    Joel Matip

Won virtually everything in the air, good pressure on Gervinho in the opening minutes to deny the Arsenal man and again just after the break.

  • Lewis Holtby

    Lewis Holtby

Has spoken of his desire to play in England and looked desperate to impress. Was lively and hard working but made little impact in truth and was substituted just after the hour mark.

  • Ibrahim Afellay

    Ibrahim Afellay

Rightly booked for diving after a great ball from Farfan, and if he had not been so eager to go to ground he might have received more sympathy from the ref. Sealed win with a confident finish from close range.

  • Marco Höger

    Marco Höger

Took a while to get going as Arsenal dominated the early possession. Not afraid to put his foot in and was little surprise to see him booked in the first half. Substituted at the break

  • Jefferson Agustin Farfán

Jefferson Agustin Farfán Top of the Match

Became a real threat for Schalke in the first half. His pace and trickery were too much for Santos to handle. Set up Howedes beautifully after the break and put the second on a plate for Afellay.

  • Roman Neustädter

    Roman Neustädter

Could not get on the ball initially, but grew into the game as the first half wore on and helped Schalke dominate the second half.

  • Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

    Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

Hardly saw the ball in the first half but was then presented with a sitter right on half-time which he wasted by shooting wide after great work from Ushida. Same story in the second half but a superb turn and shot to put Schalke ahead.
