Live Commentary

  • I've been Simon Harrison, I've thoroughly enjoyed leading you through all of the action tonight, and I hope to see you tune in again next time.
  • That's all that we have time for this evening, we hope that you enjoyed Netherlands' comfortable 2-0 win over Turkey, which has ended the latter's hopes of travelling to Brazil next year for the 2014 World Cup.
  • Good chances were few and far between for a Turkey side that struggled in open play, it was merely unfortunate and a credit to the Dutch that they failed to capitalise on a surprising amount of set pieces. The hosts can't complain, they failed to compete tonight.
  • Results elsewhere didn't go favourably, but it doesn't matter anyway, Turkey needed at least a point from this game to have any chance of progression. Cillessen enjoyed a rare outing in goal for Oranje, being tested only once, and Terim will undoubtedly be very disappointed.
  • THAT'S IT! Terim applauds the home support, but Netherlands have ended Turkey's World Cup dreams with a 2-0 win, courtesy of an efficient performance and goals from Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder.
  • 90' + 1'
Two minutes of stoppage time, and Robben is in full flight yet again! The Dutchman holds onto the ball for slightly too long however, and his eventual ball to Depay is blocked. Turkey break, but Sahan wastes the opportunity with a shot that arrows behind for a goal kick.
  • 90'
Good defending from Gonul! The full-back makes an important interception to prevent Blind's cross, with several Dutch players flocking around the penalty area. Depay takes to the field to add some fresh legs.
  • 89'
    SubstitutionJeremain Lens Memphis Depay
  • 88'
Robben cuts in from the right hand side for the umpteenth time, weaving in between defenders, but is robbed of possession as he looked to shoot. The Bayern player is a useful outlet to have, he will simply carry the ball from danger without being asked.
  • 87'
TOSUN! Another chance for a substitute, and this time it is Tosun's turn to miss the target. A good headed opportunity fails to come to fruition, and it really was a quite abysmal effort. Terim throws his water bottle to the ground in disgust.
  • 86'
SAHAN! He tries his luck from range yet against, but Cillessen is happy to let the ball flash past his post and thump into the advertising hoardings.
  • 85'
Turan attempts to get behind Vlaar down the left, but fails to outpace his man, and the Dutch centre-half clears. Turkey pick up the pieces and attack again, but this time Bruma heads clear.
  • 84'
Gonul goes down following a knee to the ribs from Sneijder, and the home fans let the Dutchman know exactly what they think of him. The right-back is quick to get back on his feet however, as stoppages won't aid his side's cause whatsoever!
  • 82'
Janmaat is found in an offside position, allowing for both Robben and Kaldirim to pick themselves up off the floor following a rash challenge from the Turkish full-back. Turkey break, allowing for Turan to deliver, but Bulut heads wide.
  • 80'
Ten minutes of normal time left, and Turkey don't look likely to get on the scoresheet, forget equalising or going on to win. It's been an efficient outings from Louis van Gaal's men, they've not given their opposition too many chances in open play.
  • 79'
TOSUN! The substitute tries to cut in from the left hand side onto his right foot, but is met by several white shirts. Clasie stands tall to block the effort, and he definitely felt it!
  • 77'
With just over ten minutes remaining for Turkey, the other group matches aren't going favourably for the Crescent Stars. Both Romania and Hungary are leading elsewhere, meaning that the hosts need three goals to definitely make their way through.
  • 76'
ROBBEN! The free-kick avoids the wall, but is too close to Demirel! The goalkeeper barely has to stretch, and pounces upon the low, curling drive from the Bayern winger.
  • 75'
Robben is awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box, after Sahan clipped the ankle of the Dutchman when he was in full flight. Yet another opportunity for Netherlands to put this game further beyond doubt.
  • 74'
    SubstitutionSelçuk İnan Cenk Tosun
  • 74'
The final substitution from Terim highlights Turkey's intentions now, as he sacrifices a deeper midfielder for a more offensively minded player. It really is now or never for Turkey, as they need to carve out two goals in 15 minutes.
  • 73'
SAHAN! The substitute catches a volley quite sweetly, but it lacks the necessary power to truly test Cillessen. The 24-year-old smothers the effort well, in the face of the pressuring Bulut.
  • 72'
Oh dear! Poor ball from Bulut, as the striker continues to have a torrid evening! Lovely build up play from Sahan allowed for things to open up for Turkey on the break, but as Bulut tries to centre the ball, he fails to make any firm contact with it.
  • 71'
TURAN! Good save and well held by Cillessen! The Atletico Madrid man was unmarked at the back post, mildly pressured by Vlaar, but couldn't guide a half volley past the opposition goalkeeper! Cillessen claims above his head.
  • 70'
Nervy moment for Cillessen! The Ajax man tried to control a backpass, but the ball wriggled under his foot, almost managing to roll over the line for a horror goal! Sahan then is allowed to shoot, but a sliding block from Blind denies him.
  • 69'
Unfortunate for Turan! The Atletico man offers himself on the left hand side, but is just unable to stretch and reach a well weighted crossfield ball from Tore. Since making two substitutions, the hosts have looked better, but still not particularly dangerous.
  • 67'
Robben is penalised for taking the ball out of play, but the Bayern man looks surprisingly light hearted regarding the decision. If play had been permitted to continue, the Dutchman would have been bearing down on goal with Kuyt spare in the centre.
  • 66'
SAHAN! The substitute steams in at the back post to meet a Tore cross, but can only deflect it wildly over the crossbar! Cillessen came to meet that cross but didn't get there, that was a real opportunity for Turkey!
  • 65'
CILLESSEN! A great stop by the Ajax keeper! He dives smartly to his left to beat away a deflected Tore strike at his front post, and that's the first time that the 24-year-old has really been tested!
  • 64'
Good defending from Vlaar! The Aston Villa defender sticks out a leg to prevent a cross from bouncing across the six yard box, before two additional Turkish corners are easily headed away! Pressure is building!
  • 63'
Yet another corner, but the ball is cleared yet again by Netherlands. For all of their opportunities to deliver the ball into dangerous areas, Turkey must be bitterly disappointed with their execution. Half an hour remains, they need to be ruthless.
  • 62'
Blind is forced to play the ball behind for a goal kick, after the Ajax defender was given the ball in a situation he wasn't entirely comfortable in. The corner is wasted atrociously once more, though, as the set piece delivery fails to beat the first man.
  • 61'
As things stand, Turkey will not be qualifying for Brazil, as Romania lead against Estonia, which would see the Eastern European nation take Turkey's place in second. Two goals are the minimum that Terim's side need to have any chance of making their way to the World Cup.
  • 60'
OFFSIDE! Lens is caught offside once again, as a lovely through ball looked to slide in the Kyiv man behind his full-back. The one thing that Turkey have managed to do quite well during this match, is prevent Netherlands from getting in behind.
  • 58'
The atmosphere has gone a little bit flat inside the stadium, and Turkey continue to look devoid of creativity, but there's certainly a sense of urgency from the home side now. Despite this, Netherlands look more dangerous, breaking with speed from Lens and Robben.
  • 56'
    SubstitutionOlcan Adın Olcay Şahan
  • 56'
    SubstitutionBurak Yılmaz Gökhan Töre
  • 56'
Another save from Demirel! This time, the goalkeeper is forced to beat away a bouncing drive from Sneijder, but Netherlands fail to create an opportunity from the resulting corner. Two substitutions for Turkey too, as Terim looks to turn this game on its head.
  • 55'
DEMIREL! A smart save from the veteran goalkeeper! Lens looked up and spotted the Turkish shot stopper off his line, trying an audacious lob to beat Demirel. He was alive to the danger however, and palms the ball firmly over his crossbar.
  • 54'
Lens tries to power down the left hand side past Gokhan Gonul, but the Dinamo Kyiv winger clambers on top of his opponent and is penalised for grabbing his shirt. It's been a very lively performance from Lens.
  • 53'
BULUT! The striker takes the ball down excellently with his instep, before trying to half-volley acrobatically with his back to goal. He gets the execution wrong however, and the ball bobbles out of play. Bulut thinks he was tugged off-balance, but the referee waves it away.
  • 52'
Turkey continue to look rather toothless, with neither Yilmaz nor Bulut seeing a great deal of the ball. The home fans are restless, jeering and booing almost constantly in this second half.
  • 51'
    Yellow Card Daryl Janmaat
  • 51'
Well cleared by Blind! A searching cross from Inan almost finds its way to an unmarked red shirt at the back post, but the Ajax left-back does well to backpedal and nod the ball clear of the danger zone.
  • 50'
Easy save for Demirel! Sneijder tries his luck from long range via a free-kick, after Robben was brought down. It's a comfortable stop for the goalkeeper, who smothers the ball at his near post.
  • 49'
Turan's near post ball is thwarted by some smart defending by Bruma, and Turkey are unable to get the ball into a packed penalty area once again. Demirel is then almost caught out, slicing an attempted clearance, but Sneijder is not able to capitalise.
  • 48'
A crushing blow for Terim's side, who presumably were sent out with the instruction of not conceding early on in the second half. With a two goal deficit and Romania leading elsewhere, it seems unlikely that tonight will be a happy one in Turkey.
  • 47'
    Assist Dirk Kuyt
  • 47'
    Goal Wesley Sneijder
GOOOOOAL! FANTASTIC GOAL! SNEIJDER! 2-0 ORANJE! That could be Turkey's World Cup hopes dashed! Intricate build up play between Kuyt and Sneijder leaves the Galatasaray midfielder able to thump the ball beyond Demirel!
  • 46'
    SubstitutionRobin van Persie Dirk Kuyt
  • 46'
    SubstitutionBruno Martins Indi Jeffrey Bruma
  • 46'
We are back underway for the second half, and Turkey have it all to do in this game if they have aspirations of playing in Brazil next year. The likes of Burak Yilmaz and Selcuk Inan will prove key if the home side can give their star players more of the ball.
  • In tonight's other Group D match, Romania are leading Estonia 1-0 at the break, meaning that Turkey currently require all three points here tonight to qualify for the World Cup. A big ask for Terim's men!
  • Safe to say that Fatih Terim will presumably be giving his players a piece of his mind at the break, as they haven't offered enough for the cause quite yet. Netherlands haven't been dominant by any stretch of the imagination, but Turkey's supply lines are being too easily severed.
  • Umut Bulut had the best chance of the half for the hosts, heading narrowly over the crossbar with a free header, after a glorious ball from the left hand side from Kaldirim. Aside from this, only Arda Turan has looked remotely capable of dragging his side back into the contest.
  • A rather fortunate early goal from Arjen Robben gifted Oranje the breakthrough, as his curling free-kick bounced through a ruck of players and beyond the baffled Volkan Demirel. Despite plenty of possession and set pieces, Turkey look unable to find an answer to the opening goal.
  • HALF TIME! The referee calls time on the first half without awarding any stoppage time, and Turkey have plenty of work to do in the second half to turn this game around. Netherlands lead 1-0.
  • 45'
Arda Turan gestures at the crowd, asking them to lift the atmosphere and get behind the team for the remaining minutes of the first half. Everyone in the stadium knows how important a goal at this stage of the game would be.
  • 44'
Well claimed by Cillessen! Yilmaz raced through past the high line of the Netherlands, before a poor touch from the Galatasaray hitman took the ball into the grateful grasp of the onrushing Ajax keeper! Poor yet again.
  • 43'
Great challenge! Martins Indi steps in excellently to prevent Bulut from linking up with Yilmaz, before Adin is penalised for a supposed push on Blind. Tensions are rising here!
  • 42'
Wasted set piece yet again for the hosts! Inan's attempted delivery floats out of play with the penalty area loaded with red shirts. Things aren't quite clicking offensively for Turkey, and a goal before the break would help them immeasurably.
  • 41'
    Yellow Card Daley Blind
  • 41'
SNEIJDER! A pacey volley from the central midfielder whistled past the post of Demirel, after a Toprak header half-cleared a Dutch cross. If that had crept into the far corner, that would have been some goal!
  • 40'
BULUT! WHAT A CHANCE! A wonderful cross from the left hand side from Kaldirim left Bulut with the goal at his mercy, but the Turkish striker couldn't keep his header down! The ball fizzes over the bar with Cillessen helpless, and Bulut rightfully has his head in his hands!
  • 39'
Robben cuts inside from the right, as he so often loves to do, but Kaldirim puts his marker under just enough pressure to force the Bayern man into ballooning his effort over the crossbar. Turkey can't afford to let him shoot freely this evening.
  • 38'
Good defending from Toprak! The centre-back dispossesses Van Persie, before preventing the ball from going out of play for a corner. The crowd sound their appreciation, they haven't done that too much in this first half.
  • 36'
VAN PERSIE! Lens breaks quickly, but overhits an intricate through ball that was looking for the run of Van Persie. Netherlands' lone striker tries in vain to latch onto the intended pass, but Gonul is able to sweep up.
  • 35'
Yet another corner for Turkey, yet another clearance by the Netherlands. Minus a possible penalty appeal for Blind potentially striking the ball with his arm, the hosts have had nothing to show whatsoever for all of their set pieces.
  • 34'
    Yellow Card Hasan Ali Kaldırım
  • 34'
A few yellow cards and more heated challenges are occurring, as frustration perhaps begins to take hold a little for Turkey. With so much possession and so little in terms of creation, it's understandable for emotions to be flaring in such an atmosphere.
  • 32'
Offside! Lens is caught by the disciplined Turkish defensive line once again, and would have been through on goal had Kaya not stepped up smartly. Netherlands are continuing to look for the quick break, but Turkey haven't been all too troubled by their game plan.
  • 31'
Van Persie nods away at the near post, after a corner delivery once again comes to nothing for the hosts. Turkey are getting closer, and their pressure is more sustained.
  • 30'
SNEIJDER! After patient build up play, the former Inter midfielder tries his luck from range, but blasts his effort directly at Demirel. Both keepers haven't truly been tested yet.
  • 29'
The combination of Blind and Vlaar work well to stop a Turkish break in it's tracks once again, as the hosts continue to look rather toothless. Turan is the only man in a red shirt who is threatening.
  • 28'
LENS! The Kyiv man stretched to his tallest extent at the back post, but couldn't quite turn home a back post header from the corner delivery of Robben! He's been heavily involved in the opening half hour.
  • 27'
TURAN! WHAT A CHANCE! The Atletico man races towards goal from a slightly awkward and tight angle, but fired a tame shot directly into the palms of Cillessen!
  • 26'
Great defending! Arda Turan looked to be through on goal, after Yilmaz flicked on a long ball, but a fantastic recovering tackle from Lens denied the Atletico midfielder! The winger has done his fair share of defensive work thus far.
  • 25'
TOPAL! KAYA! Both players try to turn a teasing Inan free-kick delivery into Cillessen's net, but somehow the ball takes a deflection off a Netherlands defender and it skips behind for a corner! That looked destined to go in!
  • 24'
    Yellow Card Bruno Martins Indi
  • 24'
The hosts are enjoying a greater percentage of the ball, but appear unable to break down the Netherlands machine. A combination of disciplined positioning and pressing is limiting Turkey's offensive possibilities, but now they have a free-kick on the edge of the box as Martins Indi fouls Turan.
  • 22'
Poor ball! Easy for Cillessen, as the advancing Turan can only clip a lofted ball into the arms of the Ajax goalkeeper. Adin also does well to deliver from the right hand side, but the ball escapes from the touch of Yilmaz. Not quite happening for Turkey.
  • 21'
SNEIJDER! The Dutchman who is based in Turkey sees a shot frustratingly blocked in the penalty area, as the diminutive playmaker steaming in towards the penalty spot after delaying his run.
  • 20'
Olcan is warned by the referee, as the midfielder looked to leave a foot in during a challenge with Blind, and there was certainly a sense of a final warning about that dialogue.
  • 19'
Unlucky! Some intricate triangles from Turkey present Kaldirim with the opportunity to slide the ball through Oranje's lines in search of Turan, but the left-back's pass is a little overhit. Turan scrambles to keep the ball in play, but it rolls behind for a goal kick.
  • 18'
Nice spell of possession for the visitors, who are stroking the ball around rather nicely. Turkey are trying to harry and press, but they can't get anywhere near. Vlaar is eventually penalised for handball in the Turkey penalty area, demonstrating how the away side are currently in control - they can press men forward.
  • 17'
Unfortunately, Turkey's players can't quite match the contribution of their supporters, who are quite literally bawling at their side to press forward and attack the opposition. They need a goal, and preferably quickly.
  • 15'
Not an ideal opening quarter of an hour for the home side, as Turkey are already trailing and struggling to find a way to test Netherlands. Bulut and Yilmaz have seen little of the ball, which will have to change if they are to get back into this game as a contest.
  • 14'
Demirel is forced to close down the angle at his near post, with Robben weaving his way past Kaldirim and to the byline! The Turkish goalkeeper dives at the feet of his opponent, and Robben fails to cut the ball back into the area.
  • 12'
VAN PERSIE! The Manchester United striker tucks the ball home, slotting it past Demirel and into the far corner, but the linesman has his flag up! The Turkish defence held their line well, and Van Persie has rightfully had a goal chalked off for offside.
  • 11'
Bulut looks to get in behind Vlaar, making an intelligent run into the channel, but Inan's ball is intercepted easily by the Aston Villa defender. The hosts are yet to threaten Cillessen in the Oranje goal!
  • 9'
What a poor start for Terim's men! They needed to stay in this game, with conceding being the worst possible scenario to throw themselves into, but Robben's free-kick baffled Demirel and has left Turkey in a right mess.
  • 8'
    Goal Arjen Robben
GOOOAL! NETHERLANDS TAKE THE LEAD! Oranje lead 1-0! Robben whips in a ball from deep on the left flank, and it evades everyone! Neither a red nor white shirt could intervene, and Demirel watches the ball bounce inside the back post!
  • 7'
LENS! The left winger cuts inside onto his right foot, but an important block is made! Turkey break, but Cillessen is quick off his line to claim a looping cross from deep.
  • 6'
Scrappy stuff from both sides, as Robben and then Turan are robbed of the ball in quick succession, as both attempted to beat their man in an unfruitful manner.
  • 5'
A slow start for the hosts, as Netherlands are seeing plenty of the ball and really minimising the chances for Turkey to break with speed and numbers. An early goal would really settle the inevitably present Turkish nerves.
  • 4'
Jeers are constantly audible for as long as Netherlands hold onto possession, and you can sense that the Turkish faithful won't be happy with anything but a win tonight.
  • 3'
Cillessen is given a little more than he may have wanted to do in the early stages, being forced into action to clear a few pass-backs. A few touches of the ball could settle him down, however.
  • 2'
Turkey are playing in their customary red strip, with Netherlands in their white away kit. Lens thwarts an early Turkish break, as the home side try to get in behind the PSV youngster.
  • 1'
And we are underway! The stadium is rocking as play begins, with Turkey receiving the full vocal backing of their fans. The game is played on the pitch, of course, so it's down to their players to reward their faith.
  • Turkish fans are chanting the name of their manager, who has turned the national side's fortunates around recently. The momentum is with them, and Netherlands have struggled against the likes of Estonia in recent months.
  • We're a few minutes from kick-off now, and the atmosphere is really cranking up as expectant home fans await their side. In March, a chance of qualification to the World Cup seemed unthinkable, so tonight is quite an occasion!
  • Turkey are in good form heading into this game, with former Galatasaray manager Fatih Terim acting as seemingly the perfect catalyst to propel his national side into the pinnacle of footballing competition. Three wins in three outings for the Crescent Stars under Terim means that Netherlands have tough opposition tonight.
  • Netherlands substitutes: Kuyt, Bruma, Willems, Strootman, Depay, Vorm, Verhaegh, Van der Vaart, De Vrij, Krul.
  • Netherlands starting line-up: Cillessen; Vlaar, Janmaat, Martins Indi, Blind; Robben, Sneijder, Fer, Clasie; Van Persie, Lens.
  • Turkey substitutes: Demir, Potuk, Tosun, Gulum, Tore, Calhanoglu, Pektemek, Kivrak, Sahan, Dursun, Zengin.
  • Turkey starting line-up: Demirel; Gonul, Kaldirim, Toprak, Kaya; Turan, Adin, Topal, Inan; Yilmaz, Bulut.
  • TEAM NEWS: Michel Vorm is out for Netherlands through injury, with Louis van Gaal able to rotate his squad a little in light of their qualification. Turkey name a very strong side, who need to grab at least a point from this evening's proceedings.
  • I'm Simon Harrison, and I will be leading you through the action this evening, in a game which bears far more significance for Turkey than Oranje. The home side need a point and to match Romania's result to progress, while Netherlands have already qualified.
  • Hello and welcome to World Cup Group D qualifying action between Turkey and Netherlands, as the hosts look for some vital points that could book their place at next year's tournament in Brazil.
