Player Ratings: Luxembourg 3-2 Northern Ireland

Mathias Janisch broke Michael O'Neill's side's hearts with a late winner after Gareth McAuley thought he had spared the blushes of his country in a topsy-turvy clash

    Jonathan Joubert

Was alert to deal with any danger off his line and was largely reliable between the sticks, making some impressive stops.

  • Chris Philipps

    Chris Philipps

Got forward well to support midfield and attack and came close with a couple of efforts. Commanding figure in defence too as he thwarted the Northern Irish.

  • Mario Mutsch

    3.50

    Mario Mutsch

The key man for the hosts, made them tick in midfield. A series of surging runs, neat touches and clever movement made him difficult to deal with from a Northern Irish perspective.

  • Stefano Bensi

Stefano Bensi Top of the Match

The tricky winger was another player that Northern Ireland failed to deal with on the night as they struggled to keep tabs on his quick darts into the centre of the field. This was demonstrated in devastating fashion by the long-range strike that put his side in front for the first time.

  • Tom Laterza

    2.50

    Tom Laterza

Largely anonymous and the visitors enjoyed some freedom down his flank, perhaps the weakest link of the lot.

  • Laurent Jans

    3.00

    Laurent Jans

Cool and calm in possession while also cajoling his team-mates to close down and frustrate the visitors' midfielders.

  • Mathias Jänisch

    2.50

    Mathias Jänisch

Got forward to help Bensi when he could but also stuck to his natural duties to stifle a Northern Irish attack that seemed bereft of ideas. His forward forays came in handy late on as he popped up to crash home the winner against all the odds.

  • Gerson
    1
    0
    3.00

    Gerson

Was found in the attacking areas with frequent regularity and came close to finding an equaliser for his side in the opening period with a curling strike which hit the crossbar.

  • D. da Mota
    1
    0
    3.00

    D. da Mota

Led the line well and dropped off to give McAuley and Evans problems constantly. Was sometimes a bit wasteful on the ball, however.

  • Aurelien Joachim

    3.50

    Aurelien Joachim

Turned home the deserved equaliser and was a constant threat with his tricky turns and flicks into the midfield and strikers.

  • David Turpel
    1

    3.50

    David Turpel

Kept his side ticking in midfield. Set up the goal with a slide-rule pass and his distribution throughout was impressive.

Substitutions

  • Ante Bukvic

    Ante Bukvic

Had no time to make an impact.

  • Antonio Luisi

    2.50

    Antonio Luisi

Offered very little during his time going forwards on the pitch, with the message from his manager presumably to hassle and harry the visitors given he was fresh from the bench. Wasted a great chance late on when he dithered on the ball.

  • Roy Carroll
    0
    1
    3.00

    Roy Carroll

Made a series of good stops and was commanding at the back. Could do nothing about the Luxembourg goal as it deflected past him but was almost embarrassed by a back-pass early in the second half.

  • Daniel Lafferty
    0
    1
    2.50

    Daniel Lafferty

Was caught out of position too often and seemed a bit inhibited as he struggled to contain the runners down his wing.

  • Gareth McAuley
    1
    0
    3.50

    Gareth McAuley

Steady presence at the back for the visitors and was also diligent in his work off the ball. Largely neat on the ball but left Carroll in trouble with a scooped back-pass in the second half. Recovered to head home the goal which looked to have secured a share of the spoils.

  • Jonny Evans
    1
    1
    3.00

    Jonny Evans

Occasionally quite sloppy and surprisingly caught out for the equaliser. His surge forward in the first half showed his attacking intentions when it allowed but not his finest night. That said, he made an outstanding challenge to deny Luisi before the last-gasp winner.

  • Lee Hodson
    0
    1
    2.50

    Lee Hodson

Struggled against the pace of Bensi and was often doubled up on. That said, he attacked well when he could and looked tidy on the ball.

  • Shane Ferguson
    1
    0
    2.50

    Shane Ferguson

Tried to dictate proceedings in midfield but was overrun and could not get enough of the ball to have a sufficient impact. Was sacrificed early in the second period.

  • Niall McGinn
    1
    0
    3.00

    Niall McGinn

Took the game to the hosts during his time on the field with a series of dazzling runs and teasing crosses. Unfortunate that his game was cut short by injury.

  • Oliver Norwood

    Oliver Norwood

Typically combative performance with some clever touches and passes helping Northern Ireland to regain some momentum as Luxembourg pressed high.

  • Steven Davis

    2.00

Steven Davis Flop of the Match

Poor performance aside from the cleverly worked assist for Paterson's opener. Gave the ball away too easily and looked slightly sluggish in tracking back.

  • Jamie Ward
    0
    1
    3.00

    Jamie Ward

Given something of a free role and delivered an effective performance. Showed great awareness when he had possession but could not always give adequate support to Paterson.

  • Martin Paterson
    1
    0
    3.50

    Martin Paterson

Desperately needed support from his team-mates as he ran the line as well as he could. Indeed, he did superbly to dash past the defence and slip his side in front with an accomplished finish.

Substitutions

  • Michael O'Connor
    0
    1
    2.50

    Michael O'Connor

Replaced McGinn but looked out of his depth as he struggled to make any sort of impact offensively as Luxembourg seized the initiative.

  • Billy Mckay
    0
    1
    3.00

    Billy Mckay

Offered far more support for Paterson and the chance to become the hero for the evening after linking up well with his strike partner. He blew the chance, however, when he seemed destined to find the back of the net.

  • William Grigg
    0
    1
    2.50

    William Grigg

Had no time to make an impact.
