Player Ratings: Brazil 1-0 South Africa

Goal.com rates the players on show as a late strike from Hulk spared the blushes of Mano Menezes who heard calls for his head following a sub-standard Canarinho display

By Tom Webber

  • Diego Alves
    31
    11
    3.00

    Diego Alves

Covered his near post well to deny Gaxa early on, though the effort was a tame one. From then on he commanded his penalty area well and showed good positioning and awareness of his net.

  • Daniel Alves
    21
    39
    2.50

    Daniel Alves

A well below-par performance from the usually rampaging full-back. He barely got forward all game but was largely preoccupied with Tshabalala. A good pass for Neymar, who was denied by Khune, was the only highlight.

  • David Luiz
    31
    27
    2.50

    David Luiz

Found it difficult to stick to his man all evening. First, he could not stop Ndlovu getting on the ball and he suffered a similar fate following the introduction of Parker as Brazil looked frail without Thiago Silva, despite a clean sheet.

  • Dedé
    8
    26
    2.50

    Dedé

Did not inspire confidence with his ability to play the ball on the ground. His touch frequently got away from him but he used his brute force to make up for it more often than not. Could have scored with a powerful first-half header.

  • Marcelo
    35
    60
    2.00

    Marcelo Flop of the Match

Developing a reputation as a Jekyll and Hyde performer for the Selecao and at the Morumbi it was definitely more of the latter. He lacked awareness and was clumsy in the challenge before being booed when he was substituted.

  • Lucas
    23
    29
    2.50

    Lucas

Only showed glimpses of his talent when he turned to run at defenders, picking up a few free kicks for his side. Drifted inside after failing to best Masenamela and had no more luck in a more central area.

  • Oscar
    57
    20
    3.00

    Oscar

Was very hungry for the ball as he floated all over the pitch in an attempt to kick start the action for Brazil. However, he failed to offer a defence-splitting pass to really swing the game the way of his side.

  • Ramires
    32
    24
    2.50

    Ramires

Did not manage to get on the ball and make the charging runs from deep that have become his trademark. He also neglected his defensive duties and left Brazil short at the back.

  • Rômulo
    12
    22
    2.50

    Rômulo

Kept the game moving more often than not with some simple passing but he did not provide enough protection defensively as Brazil failed to get a stranglehold on possession.

  • Leandro Damião
    16
    31
    2.50

    Leandro Damião

A lot would have been expected from the Internacional man after an impressive run of goals at the Olympics but he failed to deliver. Attempted too many tricks and flicks that failed to come off and failed to offer a focal point for large parts.

  • Neymar
    28
    55
    2.50

    Neymar

The 20-year-old was scarcely involved in the action throughout. A good cross for Dede's header in the first half and an excellent free kick that was tipped away by Khune were his only impressive moments.

Substitutions

  • Alex Sandro
    12
    19
    2.50

    Alex Sandro

Replaced Marcelo on the hour mark but offered no less stability and was almost caught in possession on a couple of occasions.

  • Paulinho
    12
    15

    Paulinho

Replaced Romulo in the 63rd minute but failed to have an impact on the match.

  • Arouca
    11
    16

    Arouca

Brought on for Santos team-mate Neymar in the 89th minute to make his international debut.

  • Jonas
    10
    19

    Jonas

Came on for Lucas Moura in the 71st minute but struggled to get involved in the action.

  • Hulk
    82
    15
    3.50

    Hulk Top of the Match

Added a new dimension to Brazil's attack with his direct running and power. Eased the pressure on Menezes with a scorching volley in the 74th minute that decided the match.

  • Itumeleng Isaac Khune
    33
    5
    3.50

    Itumeleng Isaac Khune

Made a series of impressive saves on the night, particularly in denying Neymar either side of half time. He was unfortunate to be beaten by Hulk in the closing stages, especially after a good initial stop from David Luiz.

  • S. Sangweni
    18
    4
    3.00

    S. Sangweni

Did not put a foot wrong as he stayed tight to Khumalo and between them did not let anything past them. Helped keep Damiao quiet but also limited the space in the channels for Brazil to pass through.

  • Punch Masenamela
    13
    4
    3.00

    Punch Masenamela

Had a formidable game at left-back as he barely let a single thing past him. Chose his moments to get forward well too and almost provided an assist for Parker but his cross was just out of reach of the striker.

  • Bongani Khumalo
    26
    2
    3.50

    Bongani Khumalo

Orchestrated the defence superbly to ensure that the Bafana Bafana stayed for a large portion of the match. He looked unbeatable at the back and had Leandro Damiao in his pocket all the time he was on the pitch.

  • Siboniso Pa Gaxa
    19
    2
    3.00

    Siboniso Pa Gaxa

Should perhaps have scored during the early exchanges as a one-two enabled him to get in behind Marcelo but his shot was weak. He held back from then on but was extremely strong and quick to the challenge.

  • Dean Furman
    12
    6
    2.50

    Dean Furman

Spent a lot of time on his debut chasing the ball across the middle of the park. His continual pressing did limit the amount of space the Brazilians had but on the whole it was a poor debut.

  • Lawrence Siphiwe Tshabalala
    31
    4
    3.50

    Lawrence Siphiwe Tshabalala

Regularly added an attacking injection for South Africa even when his side lacked numbers going forward. He used the space he was given well and won some free kicks in promising areas.

  • Kagisho Dikgacoi
    13
    5
    3.00

    Kagisho Dikgacoi

Policed the midfield and offered a simple backwards pass to the more attacking midfielders. He offered nothing going forward but he was not in the side for that and so Igesund will be happy with the solidity he provided.

  • Thulani Serero
    18
    3
    2.50

    Thulani Serero

Looked lively at times but on the whole had a relatively quiet game. Had he been able to get on the ball more he could have made a difference buy he will ultimately be disappointed with his individual display.

  • Dino Ndlovu
    13
    1
    3.00

    Dino Ndlovu

Gave David Luiz something to think about early on but his game was brought to a premature end following an injury in the 32nd minute.

  • Lerato Chabango
    14
    3
    3.00

    Lerato Chabango

Was a combative force in midfield as he continually snapped at the heels of the Brazilian midfielders. He did his best to get forward too and could well have got on the score sheet but was denied by a clearance from Dede.

Substitutions

  • Reneilwe Letsholonyane
    9
    3
    2.50

    Reneilwe Letsholonyane

Brought on for Chabangu early in the second half but struggled to provide as much steel in the middle.

  • George Maluleka
    9
    1

    George Maluleka

Replaced Serero in the 75th minute but was unable to influence proceedings.

  • Benni McCarthy
    17
    5

    Benni McCarthy

Came on for Ndlovu in the 32nd minute but was withdrawn just 11 minutes later with injury, making no impact.

  • Bernard Melvin Parker
    19
    2
    3.50

    Bernard Melvin Parker

Was extremely lively in the second half and proved to be a real nuisance. His direct running and close control got the better of the defenders on a number of occasions and he was unlucky to not get his side a goal.
