Player Ratings: Celtic 0-0 Benfica

The Glasgow outfit open their first Champions League group fixture with a goalless draw as Benfica and the Hoops offer little attacking threat to excite the Parkhead faithful

    Fraser Forster

The giant stopper was rarely troubled early on, with his only action being coming out to block a strike from Rodrigo, but he never let his side down when he was called upon for the Scottish champions.

  • Adam Matthews

    Adam Matthews

Found it tough in the right back position. Looked to get forward as much as possible and offer support to Forrest in front of him, but overall the Welshman had a steady game at the back for the Glasgow side.

  • E. Izaguirre

    E. Izaguirre Flop of the Match

Nowhere near the player who arrived in Glasgow and lit up Scottish football, made mistake after mistake, with sloppy passing as well as some reckless challenges and was eventually hauled off by Neil Lennon in place of Gary Hooper.

  • Kelvin Wilson

    Kelvin Wilson

A wall at the back for Neil Lennon’s side, showed great composure to break up a few attacking moves for Benfica in the first half and when called upon in the second 45, the centre-back was more than up to the challenge, even though he gave the Parkhead faithful a few scares.

  • Charles Mulgrew

    Charles Mulgrew

Looked a good attacking threat for Celtic in the left wing role, delivered some good crosses, but also had to look after his defensive duties as he had to help out Izaguirre again and again, was eventually moved back to left back when the Honduran went off.

  • M. Lustig

    M. Lustig

Has never really looked comfortable since arriving at Parkhead in January and playing at centre back the Swede coped well enough early on, was eventually taken off and replaced by Rogne for the last half hour.

  • Scott Brown

Scott Brown Top of the Match

Still nowhere near 100% fit, the Celtic skipper looked off the pace at times, but once he got possession he used it well to help his side and especially when the game got into the latter stages he continually harassed the Benfica midfield.

  • Kris Commons

    Kris Commons

Had a superb opening to the game as he could have had a couple of goals, but starting to drift out of it when the visitors gained a foothold, had trouble linking up with Miku in front of him, nearly caught Artur off his line with a long range effort.

  • James Forrest

    2.50

    James Forrest

Never got enough running room on the right wing as Benfica looked to close him down at every opportunity, but when he did manage to get on the ball he had the visitors on the back foot.

  • Victor Wanyama
    22
    3
    2.50

    Victor Wanyama

Was like a bull in a china shop as the midfielder constantly ploughed into anything and everything in front of him was lucky not to see a red card after racking up a number of fouls, gained his composure in the second half.

  • Miku
    1
    4
    1.50

    Miku

Looks nowhere near the type of player Celtic are looking for so far, rarely troubled the Benfica defence and when he did get the ball, he was slack in possession and his passing left a lot to be desired.

Came on for Lustig and added support at the back for Celtic.

  • Gary Hooper

    Gary Hooper

Replaced the ineffective Izaguirre, but never looked fully fit and couldn't get the winning goal.

  • Artur

    2.00

    Artur

Was very shaky anytime Celtic put a cross into the box, constantly complaining to the referee, especially at corner kicks that he was being fouled. Rarely had anything awkward to deal with from the home side.

  • Ezequiel Garay

    Ezequiel Garay

Had a couple of dodgy moments when Celtic ran at him and gave away a couple of fouls, other than that, he managed to keep his composure and had an opportunity to get a goal for the visitors.

  • L. Melgarejo

The full back looked very uncomfortable whenever Forrest ran at him, didn’t offer enough support to those in front of him.

  • Jardel Nivaldo Vieira

    Jardel Nivaldo Vieira

Had an easy night with Miku in front of him, but when Celtic sprung more bodies into action he was able to cope with the pressure that the home side put towards him.

  • Pablo Aimar
    10
    1
    3.50

    Pablo Aimar

Was the talisman of the Benfica side as he pulled the strings in the middle of the park for the Portuguese side and despite lacking the pace of others, his vision was second to none, came off with just under half an hour left to be replaced by Cardozo.

  • Toto Salvio

    Toto Salvio

Could have had a field day against Izaguirre as the 22-year-old had the constant beating of the full back, but Benfica didn’t get the ball to him enough to capitalise on the pressure and was ultimately snuffed out when Mulgrew moved to that position.

  • Osvaldo Nicolás Fabián Gaitán
    12
    0
    2.50

    Osvaldo Nicolás Fabián Gaitán

Looked good in the midfield as him and Aimar controlled that area, also had a couple of opportunities to get himself a goal, but overall looked in control throughout the game.

  • Nemanja Matić
    6
    2
    1.50

    Nemanja Matić

Looked all over the place at times, as he gave away several fouls inside his own half and could never get control over the ball to keep possession and never got a foothold on the game as Celtic dominated him throughout.

  • Enzo Nicolás Pérez
    3
    2
    2.00

    Enzo Nicolás Pérez

Didn’t get into the game as much as he would have liked, offered little for Benfica when they looked to go forward and attack the Celtic defence.

  • André Almeida
    2
    2
    2.00

    André Almeida

Promoted from the Benfica B side and the 21-year-old offered little in a way of an attacking threat as he seemed to be swallowed up by the Celtic Park atmosphere.

  • Rodrigo
    2
    2
    2.50

    Rodrigo

Didn’t do enough for Benfica, as he rarely offered enough of an attacking threat for the visitors, had a shout for a penalty in the first half after a clash with Forster inside the box, was replaced by Cesar.

Substitutions
