    Emiliano Viviano

Little he could do about Montolivo's well-placed opener, after being dreadfully exposed by Pizarro, or Flamini's second, but kept his side in contention with a point-blank range stop from El Shaarawy.

  • Facundo Roncaglia

Facundo Roncaglia Flop of the Match

Initially combined well with Cuadrado down the right-hand side but faded as an attacking force as he began to struggle defensively.

  • Stefan Savic

    Stefan Savic

Looked solid and pretty impressive in possession before he was rather unfortunately forced off less than 30 minutes in through injury.

  • Manuel Pasqual

    Manuel Pasqual

The captain led by example from start to finish. Very nearly drew his side level on the half hour with a well-struck free kick.

  • Nenad Tomovic
    24
    23
    2.50

    Nenad Tomovic

Had been struggling to get to grips with Balotelli before a poor first touch ultimately resulted in a red card for an alleged professional foul. It was harsh, though, as the Serb had not been the last man.

  • David Pizarro
    32
    25
    2.50

    David Pizarro

Had already given the ball away a couple of times with poorly executed passes before gifting Milan the lead by getting caught in possession by Montolivo some 25 yards from his own goal. Recovered well, though, showing impressive composure in slotting home is crucial penalty.

  • Alberto Aquilani
    32
    30
    3.00

    Alberto Aquilani

Struggled to get into the game, with his frustration manifesting itself in a series of niggly fouls and an over-the-top reaction to Tomovic's dismissal. However, he was greatly improved in the second half, playing a key role in Fiorentina's fightback.

  • Juan Cuadrado
    34
    18
    3.00

    Juan Cuadrado

Looked menacing enough whenever he was released into space on the right wing but appeared on the verge of a red card himself after seeing Tomovic given his marching orders. Calmed down, though, and earned his side a penalty with his quick feet.

  • Borja Valero
    38
    19
    3.50

    Borja Valero

Neat and tidy in possession, the Spaniard played with great intelligence and, unlike many of his team-mates, never lost his cool at any point.

  • Stevan Jovetic
    39
    17
    2.50

    Stevan Jovetic

The gamble to start the Montenegrin backfired badly, with the Viola's star man forced off just before the break. Up until that point, he had looked desperately out of sorts, managing just one decent effort on goal.

  • Adem Ljajic
    70
    13
    4.00

    Adem Ljajic

Fiorentina's liveliest attacker, the Serb was in the process of going from one end of the field to the other when he was cynically tugged back by Montolivo midway through the first half. Took revenge by earning and scoring a second-half spot-kick.

Substitutions

  • Marvin Compper

    Marvin Compper

Made an unexpectedly early introduction in place of the injured Savic and wasted little time in letting Balotelli know he was there by immediately going right though the back of the forward. Defended well enough thereafter, though.

  • Giulio Migliaccio
    11
    20

    Giulio Migliaccio

Introduced in place of Ljacic as Montella successfully shut up shop late on.

  • Rômulo

    17
    3.00

    Rômulo

Came on for the injured Jovetic in injury time at the end of the first half and put himself about without ever really looking like scoring.

  • Christian Abbiati
    83
    14
    3.50

    Christian Abbiati

Very nearly made a mess of what should have been a routine save from Jovetic, but fared far more impressively with a couple of stinging strikes from Pasqual. Unable to keep out either penalty, though he got close to Pizarro's.

  • Mattia De Sciglio
    60
    48
    2.50

    Mattia De Sciglio

Caused problems whenever he ventured forward, linking well with El Shaarawy at times, and was doing a decent job keeping Cuadrado quiet until a rash challenge with 17 minutes remaining ultimately cost his side two points.

  • Philippe Mexes
    83
    14
    3.00

    Philippe Mexes

Instigated one dangerous attack with a measured cross-field ball, but focused mainly on his defensive duties, which he performed effectively and with the minimum of fuss.

  • Cristian Zapata
    82
    15
    3.00

    Cristian Zapata

Calm and composed at the back, his confidence there for all to see in the way in which he repeatedly stepped out of defence to get Milan moving in the right direction.

  • Ignazio Abate
    83
    15
    3.00

    Ignazio Abate

Defended stoutly and offered a decent attacking outlet down the right-hand side, whipping over a couple of inviting crosses, as well as setting up Flamini for a great chance early in the second half.

  • Sulley Muntari
    58
    41
    3.00

    Sulley Muntari

Industrious as ever but was a red card waiting to happen on account of his annoying indiscipline. Belatedly booked after the second of two quickfire fouls on Aquilani right on half-time, so wisely withdrawn by Allegri at the break.

  • Kevin-Prince Boateng
    57
    56
    3.50

    Kevin-Prince Boateng

Unluckily saw a splendidly executed volley chalked off for an offside against Balotelli but that was to be the higlight of an otherwise disappointing afternoon.

  • Mathieu Flamini
    95
    21
    3.50

    Mathieu Flamini

Looked keen to get forward in support of Milan's attacking triumverate right from the start and could have got his name on the scoresheet eight minutes into the second period but shot straight at Viviano. Made amends, though, just a few minutes later by deflecting Montolivo's cross home.

  • Riccardo Montolivo
    171

Riccardo Montolivo Top of the Match

A stray early pass from the skipper was greeted with a huge roar of approval from the home fans, but the former Fiorentina man silenced his critics with a well-taken goal, after dispossessing Pizarro just outside the Viola area, before creating a second for Flamini with driven cross.

  • Mario Balotelli
    78
    93
    2.00

    Mario Balotelli

Proved an excellent target man, holding the ball up wonderfully well and creating openings with his deft lay-offs. Indeed, Fiorentina's players became so frustrated with Balotelli that they just resorted to kicking him every time he got the ball. Set-pieces were poor, though.

  • Stephan El Shaarawy
    84
    51
    2.50

    Stephan El Shaarawy

El Shaarawy looked capable of making something every time he got on the ball but that just wasn't often enough. Was responsible for getting Tomovic sent off but really should have buried a header from a Montolivo cross.

Substitutions

  • Antonio Nocerino
    37
    72
    2.50

    Antonio Nocerino

Took over in midfield from Muntari at half-time and immediately brought more enthusiasm and attacking endeavour to Milan's midfield. However, then undid all his good work by bringing down Ljacic in the box.

  • Giampaolo Pazzini
    68
    26
    2.00

    Giampaolo Pazzini

Came on for Boateng with six minutes to go but did not get a clear sight of goal.

  • M'Baye Niang

    27

    M'Baye Niang

Replaced Flamini for the closing stages as Milan went in search of a winner. He couldn't provide one, however.
