Vincenzo Montella's side came close to ending Juventus' unbeaten run midweek, but it is a different record they will hoping to ensure continues for the Nerazzurri on Sunday

Inter will look to follow up their Wednesday night victory over Chievo by securing their first home win of the season.  Following their shock defeat to Siena, Andrea Stramaccioni altered his team’s formation, opting to field a three-man central defence en route to a 2-0 victory. Buoyed by this success, he will now deploy it against a more accomplished outfit.

Stramaccioni is unlikely to rotate his team and although the absence of Wesley Sneijder will undoubtedly be a huge blow, they have Antonio Cassano, who scored as a substitute against the Flying Donkeys, to partner Diego Milito upfront.

McDonald Mariga, Dejan Stankovic and Rodrigo Palacio are unavailable due to injury, although Christian Chivu is fit again, having just failed to recover in time for the Nerazzurri’s previous fixture.

After a highly accomplished performance against Juventus, the Viola will look to cause trouble for another of Serie A’s giants. So impressive were Vincenzo Montella’s side against the reigning champions that a draw could be seen as two points lost rather than one gained.

On the back of this performance - and with Alberto Aquilani and Mounir El Hamdaoui still unavailable due to injury - the Italian coach will name an unchanged side as he looks to gain all three points against an Inter team which has been anything but convincing at home.

  • In last season’s corresponding fixture, Inter beat Fiorentina 2-0.

  • Antonio Cassano leads Inter’s scoring charts with 3 goals in 5 appearances. With two of these appearances coming from the bench, resulting in an average of a goal every 97 minutes.

  • Inter were founded in 1908 and won their first league title 2 years later.

  • Fiorentina currently lie sixth in Serie A, having only lost once this season.

  • Of Fiorentina’s 26 senior players, 17 of them only joined the club this summer.

  • Fiorentina have won 2 Serie A titles, the last of which came in the 1968-69 season.

Having scored just three league goals for rivals AC Milan last season, the mercurial forward has already matched this tally and shows no signs of slowing down. With Wesley Sneijder missing, much of the creative burden will rest with him. Never lacking for confidence, the 30-year-old will be determined to continue his good early season form.

The Montenegrin forward is already a phenomenon in the city of Florence. At only 22-years-old, he is already seen as Fiorentina’s key player and the central link around which the team should be built.  Having sat out the entire 2010-11 season with a knee injury, he rebounded last season with 14 goals in 27 games. Ominously for Inter, the striker seems to have upped his game, with four goals and one assist from his opening five appearances in Serie A.

Editor's Prediction

Inter have still failed to register a home league victory this season and, in the face of a resurgent Fiorentina, this unwelcome trend will continue. Both teams will look to win the game, so expect an open match with plenty of chances. Despite this, it seems likely that the two teams will cancel each other out and will have to settle for a share of the spoils.
