Player Ratings: Real Madrid 5-1 Levante

Goal.com rates the players on show as Gonzalo Higuain's acrobatic volley inspired los Blancos to come from behind to secure a resounding victory at the Santiago Bernabeu

By Tom Webber

  • Diego López Rodríguez

    Diego López Rodríguez

The keeper was forced into an early save from Robert Acquafresca's third-minute drive, but proved equal to it. There was little he could do to keep Michel's deflected effort out and he was mostly untroubled thereafter.

  • Pepe
    193
    67
    3.00

    Pepe

Had very little to do at the back for much of the game so spent a lot of time watching his team-mates attacking. His concentration seemed to slip at times with a few sloppy touches, though he was largely solid.

  • Marcelo
    289
    46
    3.50

    Marcelo

Pushed forward regularly to add some more width for his side as Benzema drifted into more central areas. He made a few good runs but was out of position as Levante countered to open the scoring.

  • Arbeloa
    192
    69
    3.00

    Arbeloa

The Spain international was barely tested defensively on the afternoon but ensured he did not get carried away with his ventures forward. He ensured their was always width for his side but was quite reserved.

  • Sergio Ramos
    270
    45
    3.50

    Sergio Ramos

The centre-back was immoveable in defence for Real Madrid as he read the play superbly and was never less than fully-committed. He also provided an aerial threat in the opposing area.

  • Xabi Alonso
    296
    39
    3.50

    Xabi Alonso

With Levante keeping almost every man behind the ball, Alonso was able to direct the play whenever an attack broke down. His cross for Higuain's stunning equaliser was typically piercing and accurate.

  • Luka Modric
    324
    67
    3.00

    Luka Modric

Was granted a bit more freedom in a deeper role due to the presence of Xabi Alonso and he used it well. He played a large number of short, crisp passes but could have added a few more penetrating balls to that.

  • Kaká
    509
    48
    3.50

    Kaká

The Brazilian put in an exceptionally sharp performance and was unfortunate to be substituted early in the second half. He continually found space between the lines to get at Levante and tucked away a penalty to make it 2-1.

  • Karim Benzema
    230
    102
    3.00

    Karim Benzema

Struggled to get involved in the game from wide on the left so he tended to drift into the channel. He was dangerous in there at times but did not get enough shots away to worry Munua.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín
    527
    52
    4.50

Gonzalo Higuaín Top of the Match

His movement always made him a threat to the Levante back line and he was always on the shoulder and ready to run into space. His goal equalised the match in the first half and it was a sublimely-executed volley.

  • José Callejón
    120
    239
    2.00

José Callejón Flop of the Match

Certainly had the beating of Juanfran in the wide areas but failed to put enough quality crosses into the box. His finishing when drifting inside was not impressive either as he regularly missed the target.

Substitutions

  • Mesut Özil
    683
    44
    4.00

    Mesut Özil

Came on for Benzema in the 76th minute and had a brilliant cameo performance. Got himself into some dangerous areas and grabbed two goals in the closing stages.

  • Ángel Di María
    324
    105
    3.50

    Ángel Di María

Replaced Kaka in the 57th minute but failed to match his team-mates sprightliness in possession. He failed to use his electric pace to worry Levante and was fairly disappointing.

  • C. Ronaldo
    594
    82
    4.00

    C. Ronaldo

Brought on in place of Callejon at half-time and instantly added a bit more life to the Madrid attack. He was eager to get at Levante and was rewarded in the 84th minute with a goal before setting Ozil up for Madrid's fourth.

  • Gustavo Munúa
    46
    25
    3.50

    Gustavo Munúa

The Uruguayan had his goal regularly bombarded with efforts from Real Madrid and it was thanks to him that the score remained close for so much of the game. However, there was little he could do late on as his defence fell apart.

  • Loukas Vyntra
    13
    31
    2.00

    Loukas Vyntra

A poor performance from the Greece international as he was powerless to resist the star-studded Madrid attack. He got dragged in by their play and left too much space at the back which the hosts exploited late on.

  • Juan García García
    13
    25
    2.50

    Juan García García

The veteran full-back was slow to close down in the wide areas and offered Madrid too much time and space to do their damage. His positioning was poor throughout the game.

  • Ballesteros
    16
    28
    3.00

    Ballesteros

The 37-year-old read the game well and performed impressively in the air. At times his lack of pace was exposed by the Madrid attackers, though he kept the defence compact to try and combat this.

  • Christian Lell
    14
    25
    2.00

    Christian Lell

The right-back started off well but his game soon turned into a bit of a nightmare. He failed to get tight to Higuain who then volleyed in an equaliser and it was his handball that gifted Madrid a penalty which they took the lead from.

  • Iborra
    15
    23
    3.00

    Iborra

Launched the counterattack from which Levante scored the game's opener with a decent pass into Michel. He was unable to provide his defence with relief from the relentless Madrid attacks as he did not press the ball enough.

  • Rubén
    13
    23
    2.50

    Rubén

Never really tested Arbeloa on the flanks as he did not supply Levante with an attacking outlet on the left. He was forced to spend much of his afternoon covering defensively and could not impact the match there.

  • Pedro Ríos
    13
    20
    3.00

    Pedro Ríos

Had some moments of impressive creativity, particularly as he supplied the pass for the game's first goal. His bright play made for some of Levante's best moments, but unfortunately they were few and far between.

  • Míchel
    24
    19
    3.50

    Míchel

Used the ball well on the counterattack that led to him opening the scoring, feeding Pedro Rios and then finding space for the return. However, he was forced to defend and thus could not influence the game in the final third.

  • Diop
    12
    23
    2.00

    Diop

Did not track the runners through the middle of the park enough, leaving his defence with it all to do. He rarely got on the ball to try and move things forward for his team in a disappointing afternoon.

  • Robert Acquafresca
    22
    21
    2.00

    Robert Acquafresca

Received hardly any service or support throughout his time on the pitch. On the rare opportunities that came his way he did go close a couple of times, though his third-minute shot was the only time he forced Lopez into a save.

Substitutions

  • Barkero
    10
    21

    Barkero

Came on for Michel in the 77th minute and his only contribution was to blaze over an open goal.

  • Nabil El Zhar
    17
    22
    2.50

    Nabil El Zhar

Brought on for Acquafresca in the 69th minute but did not add anything more to Levante in the final third.

  • Valdo
    15
    22
    2.50

    Valdo

Replaced Pedro Rios in the 68th minute but could not make the most of a Diego Lopez mistake with the score at 2-1
