Player Ratings: Real Madrid 5-2 Mallorca

Goal.com was on hand to cast a critical eye over events at the Bernabeu, where los Blancos struck three times in five minutes to turn a deficit into a convincing win

    Diego López Rodríguez

Could not be blamed for either goal, and made a smart save in the second half from Dos Santos.

  • Raphaël Varane

    Raphaël Varane

The centre-back did not live up to some of his recent performances, as he was affected by the disorganisation of the Madrid back line and was guilty of a few nervy moments. Played more like his usual self in the second half.

  • Pepe
    244
    58
    3.50

    Pepe

Pushed into a defensive midfield role for the first half, but it was a surprising offensive edge to his game that was most noticeable. He set up Madrid’s equaliser by racing onto a Luka Modric pass and teeing up an unmarked Gonzalo Higuain. Still, he did not protect his defence adequately, and looked more at ease when moved to centre-back for the second half.

  • Sergio Ramos

    Sergio Ramos

Some careless errors early on provided Mallorca with a platform to attack deep in the Madrid half. Shifted to right back for the second half, where he did not look as vulnerable.

  • Fabio Coentrao

    Fabio Coentrao

Really struggled when dealing with the high ball into the box from set-pieces and crosses, and was beaten by Nsue in the build-up to the opening goal of the game. However, in the second period, he showed an improvement in his offensive game as he played an important role in Madrid’s turnaround.

  • Arbeloa
    118
    205
    2.00

    Arbeloa Flop of the Match

Has to accept some blame for the opener, as he allowed Giovani Dos Santos more space than he needed to get a cross into the area on one too many instances.

  • Luka Modric
    790
    60
    4.50

    Luka Modric

A lively figure in the middle of the park, as his ability to release the ball quickly and accurately set many Madrid attacks in motion. Added their third goal of the game with an absolute beauty from outside the area that was every bit as good as his effort against Manchester United.

  • C. Ronaldo

    C. Ronaldo

The Portuguese hit the bar during a frustrating first half where it seemed like noting would go right for him. However, he was on song after the break, heading home a corner to begin Madrid’s astounding turnaround, and came close to scoring again with a flick from point blank range.

  • Kaká
    354
    121
    2.00

    Kaká

Not always the most visible presence in the offensive third, as his tendency to drift across the lines to pick up the ball instead saw him drift to the periphery of the game. Decent for a short spell in the second half before his withdrawal around the hour mark.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín

Gonzalo Higuaín Top of the Match

To his credit, he never stopped trying to get into goalscoring positions, and was in the right place at the right time to turn home lay-offs from Pepe and Mesut Ozil at critical moments in the match. Unselfish to pass up a hat-trick late on in favour of teeing up Karim Benzema for the fifth.

  • Morata
    243
    83
    2.50

    Morata

Apart from one lay-off to provide Ronaldo with a shooting opportunity, the youngster hardly grabbed his chance to impress as he was as frustrated as any of his teammates in the first half. Taken off at the break.

Substitutions

  • Mesut Özil

    3.50

    Mesut Özil

An absolutely decisive impact off the bench, as within 10 minutes of his introduction at half time, he had already set up goals for Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain to turn the match on its head.

  • Xabi Alonso
    289
    36

    Xabi Alonso

Came into a comfortable situation, and was afforded a lot of time to dictate the game from deep.

  • Karim Benzema
    311
    39
    3.50

    Karim Benzema

Wrapped up the scoring late on with a straightforward finish under little pressure from close range.

  • Dudú Aouate

    Dudú Aouate

Were it not for his alertness throughout the game, Mallorca could have conceded a lot more than they did.

  • Alan Hutton
    16
    35
    2.50

    Alan Hutton

Glanced a header wide from a corner during a very promising first-half showing, but faded after the break and struggled defensively.

  • Nunes
    7
    39
    2.00

    Nunes

Stood firm for most of the first half but like the rest of the defence, Madrid's intensity after the break was simply too difficult to contain.

  • Bigas
    9
    35
    2.00

    Bigas

Registered an assist for a wayward header that was turned home by Alejandro Alfaro, and made a crucial interception on Higuain in a generally solid game.

  • Kevin
    8
    34
    2.00

    Kevin

Had the measure of Morata for the first half, but the likes of Mesut Ozil and Karim Benzema proved a much more difficult task after the break, and he was caught out at times.

  • Tomás Pina
    20
    26
    3.00

    Tomás Pina

Really played a key role in disrupting the Madrid midfield during the first half as he made a number of tackles. Not as effective after the break.

  • Fernando Tissone
    7
    33
    2.50

    Fernando Tissone

Like most of his team, it was a game of two halves from him, as he lost much of his poise and confidence once the second period kicked off and Madrid fought back into the game.

  • Nsue
    17
    30
    3.00

    Nsue

Scored the first goal of the game with a precise header, but in truth, he did not provide many notable moments outside of that, and he was withdrawn in the second half.

  • Giovani dos Santos
    86
    30
    3.50

    Giovani dos Santos

The main instigator of Mallorca's impressive first half as his running with the ball and accuracy from crosses and dead balls set both of his side's goals in motion.

  • Víctor
    8
    36
    2.00

    Víctor

Could not offer his side many meaningful possessions up front as he appeared unsure of what to do with the ball once in possession. Substituted in the second half.

  • Alfaro
    20
    30
    3.50

    Alfaro

Thumped home his side's second goal with his head, and was very intelligent in possession whenever Mallorca looked to counter. Had one or two encouraging moments in the second half even when the rest of his team had largely switched off.

Substitutions

  • Tomer Hemed
    13
    42
    2.00

    Tomer Hemed

Offered little to his side's cause after coming off the bench.
