Iker Casillas Top of the Match

Made a top save from Postiga in the 19th minute and was faced with little else for the remainder of the half. Zaragoza improved after the break but a string of impressive stops kept the visitors at bay.

  • Pepe

    Pepe

It was a simple night for Pepe as he swept up the vast majority of attacks with ease. Even when Madrid came under pressure in the second half he remained solid and closed the play quickly.

  • Sergio Ramos
    173
    34
    3.50

    Sergio Ramos

Looked at home on the right as he dealt with the sporadic link-up between Abraham and Apono. Perhaps playing at centre-back has made him a bit more conservative as he rarely pushed on to support the attacks.

  • Arbeloa
    153
    33
    3.50

    Arbeloa

Made his return to the side after two weeks on the sidelines but was forced to play out of position at left-back. He was no less reluctant to get forward and put some decent crosses into the danger area.

  • Raúl Albiol
    143
    43
    3.50

    Raúl Albiol

Continued from a solid display in midweek with another competent outing. He was indomitable in the air but afforded Postiga a bit too much space at times. Unlucky not to score a header but Higuain slammed in the rebound.

  • Mesut Özil
    213

    3.50

    Mesut Özil

Never really pulled the strings like he does when at his creative best. His positive moments, whilst displaying immense quality, were too few and far between as the resilient Zaragoza defence remained relatively tight until the closing stages.

  • Michael Essien
    298
    40
    3.50

    Michael Essien

Looked far more comfortable out of the left-back position and bossed the midfield for Los Blancos. He screened the defence well and completed an impressive display with his first goal for the club.

  • Luka Modric
    439
    47
    4.00

    Luka Modric

Pulled the strings from deep with a number of quality passes. He linked defence to attack well as Madrid dominated proceedings and bagged himself a late goal to put pressure on Ozil.

  • Ángel Di María
    218
    30
    4.00

    Ángel Di María

Caused countless problems for Abraham with his tight control and direct dribbling. He created some decent opportunities and showed great perseverance to find the net in the 25th minute.

  • C. Ronaldo
    306
    145
    4.00

    C. Ronaldo

Not quite his clinical self as he struggled to stand out in a relatively hushed Bernabeu. His piercing run was key to Di Maria's goal but he did little else until his free kick crashed off the bar in the 85th minute.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín
    214
    35
    4.00

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Got into some dangerous areas but found it difficult up against an impressive Loovens. He still managed to find space from a corner to smash in a loose ball and kept the defence busy throughout.

Substitutions

  • Nacho Fernández
    152
    18
    3.00

    Nacho Fernández

Came on for Arbeloa in the 82nd minute and did not have enough time to influence proceedings.

  • Karim Benzema
    195
    26
    3.50

    Karim Benzema

Continued his excellent midweek form when he replaced Higuain with 20 minutes remaining. Found plenty of space and got an assist when he set up Essien in the closing stages.

  • José Callejón
    138
    27
    3.00

    José Callejón

Played just over 15 minutes as he was brought on in Di Maria's stead. Looked dangerous on the counterattack and had a hand in Modric's strike.

  • Roberto
    22
    15
    3.00

    Roberto

Was unlucky to be beaten on the first goal after a good save stopped Raul Albiol's header from finding the net. He was then let down by his defenders, who failed to react as Di Maria sent in the second. He made some more great saves after the break, particularly from Ronaldo's late free kick.

  • Álvaro
    11
    22
    2.50

    Álvaro Flop of the Match

The centre-back was not at his best and was rescued by his defensive partner on a few occasions. He was unable to cope with the runs of the Madrid forwards and seemed a step off the pace throughout.

  • Glenn Loovens
    11
    13
    3.00

    Glenn Loovens

A composed performance from the Dutchman as he kept Higuain quiet for large parts. He used his body well to shield the ball under pressure but was pulled apart by two late counterattacks.

  • Cristian Sapunaru
    15
    13
    3.00

    Cristian Sapunaru

Performed well at right-back, keeping the effect of Cristiano Ronaldo to a minimum. He even looked to push on in the second half and put some decent crosses into the box, though there was no finishing touch.

  • Minero
    13
    13
    3.50

    Minero

The former Barcelona B players was eager to get forward and kept Ramos busy during the first half. His attacking intent meant that the Spain international could not push on as much, though he was guilty of leaving too much space.

  • Movilla
    9
    12
    3.00

    Movilla

An intelligent and industrious display in midfield from Movilla. He was at the heart of Zaragoza's most positive moves and tracked Ozil well throughout to restrict his ability to pass the ball through the defence.

  • Apoño
    8
    13
    3.00

    Apoño

Failed to create many chances for his side as options were extremely limited. He slowed the play when Zaragoza really needed to attack with pace and ultimately contributed very little.

  • Montañés
    10
    13
    3.50

    Montañés

Had a relatively quiet first half as Zaragoza's forward line looked extremely isolated from one another. Pulled a save from Casillas in the second half and galvanised his side to an improved performance.

  • José Mari
    10
    15
    3.50

    José Mari

A fairly industrious display in midfield helped keep Madrid at bay for large periods. He rattled the bar with a swerving effort in the second half but was left lagging behind as Madrid netted two late strikes.

  • Hélder Postiga
    49
    8
    3.50

    Hélder Postiga

The striker looked extremely dangerous in the first half but lacked support from his team-mates. He forced Casillas' into the game's first save and had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside.

  • Víctor Rodríguez
    11
    14
    3.00

    Víctor Rodríguez

Did not provide enough width on the right but linked up well with Sapunaru at times. He would have got a goal had it not been for an excellent Casillas save on the hour mark.

Substitutions

  • Romaric
    10
    13
    3.00

    Romaric

Brought on in the final moments and did not have time to impact the game.

  • Carlos Aranda
    8
    15
    3.00

    Carlos Aranda

Came on for Postiga in the closing stages but lacked the effectiveness of the Portuguese in the final third.

  • Javier Álamo Cruz
    8
    12
    3.00

    Javier Álamo Cruz

Replaced Victor Rodriguez with 15 minutes remaining but failed to influence the game.
