Player Ratings: England 2-1 Italy

Jermain Defoe scored a terrific late goal to hand the Three Lions victory over the Azzurri in a tepid affair in Switzerland, with the two sides also exchanging goals from corners

By Oliver Platt

  • Jack Butland

    2.50

    Jack Butland

Did well to palm Diamanti's deflected free kick away but could do nothing to stop De Rossi's header from the resulting corner. Comfortable debut and was replaced at half-time.

  • Gary Cahill
    37
    23
    2.00

    Gary Cahill

Distributed well, as ever, but like Jagielka, allowed too many through-balls to get past him. Dealt unconvincingly, too, with a Diamanti cross of which Destro nearly took advantage. Thought he had given England the lead when he volleyed home a corner but Lescott was guilty of shirt-pulling.

  • Kyle Walker
    32
    14
    2.50

    Kyle Walker

Showed more appetite for adventure down the right than Baines did on the opposite side, but did not attack with his usual conviction or explosiveness. Lost the run of Peluso, who might have done better when he got behind the defence.

  • Leighton Baines
    21
    21
    2.00

    Leighton Baines

No right winger to mark so he might have been expected to break forward with aplomb, but he really only supported the midfield and did not look like getting in good crossing positions.

  • Phil Jagielka
    14
    21
    2.50

    Phil Jagielka

Levelled the score with an excellent diving header from Lampard's corner. Looked somewhat stretched by Destro's pace at times and was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty when he leant on the striker early in the second half.

  • Adam Johnson
    38
    15
    3.00

    Adam Johnson

Saw plenty of the ball and showed off his bag of tricks. Left Balzaretti for dead before picking out Walker with a through ball, who then won the corner from which England equalised. Faded as the match went on, but his first-half display was promising in a tepid match.

  • Ashley Young
    29
    30
    2.00

    Ashley Young

Drifted across the edge of the box menacingly but did not create or receive much in the way of chances. Looks more effective as a more orthodox winger and was eventually withdrawn without having made much of a mark on the game.

  • Frank Lampard
    132
    21
    3.50

    Frank Lampard

Supplied the corner from which Jagielka equalised. Neat in midfield and got forward well but it was by lurking in a deeper position that he threatened with a couple of long-range efforts. Not far away with a free kick shortly before half-time before he was withdrawn in the second half. Looks as if he still has a part to play for club and country.

  • Michael Carrick
    66
    17
    2.50

    Michael Carrick

Outjumped by De Rossi from a corner as Italy took the lead. Neat and tidy, as always, in possession but struggled to find much in the way of penetration.

  • Tom Cleverley
    82
    25
    2.50

    Tom Cleverley

Showed some neat touches around the edge of the box but often received the ball in congestion with his back to goal. Struggled to exert much creative influence overall, and might have done better to pick out a Defoe run in the second half.

  • Andy Carroll
    24
    42
    2.50

    Andy Carroll

Showed good movement and offered for passes frequently but England might have found him of more use if he had been more of a static central reference point rather than drifting around. Replaced by Defoe at half-time.

Substitutions

  • Joleon Lescott
    10
    19
    2.50

    Joleon Lescott

Introduced in the second half and could have grabbed the winning goal after Sirigu made an excellent save but palmed the rebound in his direction. Couldn't quite make good contact from close range, forcing the ball against the post. Defensively untested.

  • Ryan Bertrand
    48
    13
    2.50

    Ryan Bertrand

Made a crucial clearance off the goal-line after arriving as a late substitute.

  • Jake Livermore
    18
    18

    Jake Livermore

Made his debut in the latter stages in central midfield.

  • James Milner
    26
    21
    3.50

    James Milner

Immediately injected some enthusiasm and creativity to the right-hand side of midfield, sending in two decent crosses shortly after entering the fray. Then delivered a peach of a free kick from the left that Cahill should have converted, Peluso nearly did and Lescott just failed to force inside the post after Sirigu had made a superb save. Almost set up a third when he beat Peluso on the right but Ogbonna and Astori did just enough to turn his low cross behind.

  • Jermain Defoe
    49
    16
    3.00

    Jermain Defoe

Had barely seen the ball before, out of nothing down the left-hand side, he turned inside Astori and belted a terrific shot into the top corner.

  • Salvatore Sirigu
    28
    16
    2.00

    Salvatore Sirigu

Little to do in the first half. No chance with Jagielka's header and easily dealt with Lampard's long-range efforts. Made an excellent save when Peluso looked to have turned Milner's free kick into his own net but couldn't keep Defoe's effort out despite getting a slight touch.

  • Angelo Ogbonna
    46
    7
    3.00

    Angelo Ogbonna

Generally very solid, letting little past him as he held his position on the edge of the box when England had possession in the Italy half.

  • Davide Astori
    23
    17
    2.00

    Davide Astori

Guilty of a couple of poor challenges in the first half. Had formed a strong partnership with Ogbonna but allowed Defoe to run across him to score the winning goal late on.

  • Federico Balzaretti
    16
    24
    1.50

    Federico Balzaretti

Didn't get much change out of Walker when he roamed down the left-hand side and had a tough time dealing with Johnson, who usually cut inside but skinned him in the build-up to England's equaliser when he did head down the touchline. Replaced at half-time by Peluso.

  • Ignazio Abate
    54
    8
    2.50

    Ignazio Abate

Got into good positions down the right flank, showing his usual combination of energy and explosiveness, but too often wasteful with his end product. Did drill a dangerous low cross across the six-yard box after a good exchange with Diamanti, however.

  • Alberto Aquilani
    25
    21
    2.00

    Alberto Aquilani

Picked out Destro with a lovely pass over the top from deep, which England have always struggled to defend due to their lack of pressing. Otherwise, fairly subdued, with De Rossi taking the reins.

  • Antonio Nocerino
    63
    5
    2.50

    Antonio Nocerino

Threatening when he drifted out to the left wing before cutting inside on his right foot, delivering a couple of dangerous passes and crosses from deep positions.

  • Daniele De Rossi
    75
    5
    3.00

    Daniele De Rossi

Played a superb long pass behind the defence which Destro failed to control. Flicked header opened the scoring and he fulfilled his usual role as midfield pivot effectively.

  • Alessandro Diamanti
    40
    7
    2.50

    Alessandro Diamanti

Tested Butland with a deflected free kick before planting the resulting corner on De Rossi's header for the opening goal. Not frequently on the ball but a threat every time he received the space to provide a delivery into the box.

  • Mattia Destro
    56
    9
    3.00

    Mattia Destro

Has a natural instinct for finding channels of space in and around the penalty area. Might have done better with a long De Rossi pass in the first half and also failed to properly control a similar ball from Aquilani. Showed his predatory instinct in the second half by pouncing on a loose ball in the box to force Ruddy into an excellent save. Always looked the most likely player to score on the pitch, but could not find the target.

  • Stephan El Shaarawy
    65
    14
    2.00

    Stephan El Shaarawy

Quiet. Tried to drift out to the left-hand side to create width but didn't receive much in the way of support or possession. Broke forward into space dangerously early in the second half but overhit his pass to Diamanti.

Substitutions

  • Federico Peluso
    27
    7
    2.00

    Federico Peluso

Found his way between Walker and Cahill with a good run from left-back but hit the side netting when through on goal. Nearly scored an own goal when he dealt indecisively with Milner's free kick and skinned by the Manchester City man again late on.
